And don't forget , it doesn't end there. It is essential to get the draught/blower system correctly set up too. |

A few more summers like this one and the problems of wood-burning deforestation in Europe will be solved. |

Rolster , do pass on my regards to Philip de Clerq and Rita if you meet them in the vicinity of Tourtour. John Hancock/ ex-Synthomer.Belgium. |

I''m afraid nameplate outputs on new nuclear designs are a bit hopeful too. The AGR's were rated at 1320MW, 1000MW was nearer the mark over their life . |

If this was treated as a problem in a control system then the cause is too much positive feedback, ie +ve compound growth , in everything, for too long. Geronimo saw this happening many years ago, with his famous , " When you 've eaten everything else, eat your money ". |

Sailing ships and windmills seemed quite successful at the time. I wonder what is the biggest difference between then ............. and now ? |
Thread: How Much is this Costing Me? |

Surely , the most inefficient use of electrical energy in the home is to create heat directly , ie the oven and immersion heater ?

Thread: Engineered fuel prices |

Still a bargain compared to the price of bottled water. |
Thread: British Homes Have Air Conditioning ? |
20/07/2022 14:00:31 |
And the other end of air-conditioning , the jet engines placed around the vineyards to keep the frost at bay. |

Apologies for 'exaggerating ' the likely necessity of burning more gas to make up for losing another 'nuke' before time. As said before , running these 'creaking gates' flat out will do nothing towards increasing their remaining life. QED |

I pay 7p/Kwh for gas, 28p/ Kwh for electricity. Why is that ? |
08/07/2022 15:31:13 |
Oh dear , another 1GW nuclear generation has just gone . All over for Hinkley B ,by Aug 1st. That's another 4GW of gas we need to burn . |

Absolutely fascinating video. The vital importance of balance and yet in full size , I do believe the roots of the blades of some stages are floating. How does that work ? |

The 'chime' whistle of the Britannia's , especially at night on the Norwich - L'pool St line. |

Significant over pressure on a shut ball valve will drive the ball right through the seat material and damage the ball such that it will leak in further use. Thermal expansion of trapped product in a long line proved that , until we fitted the proper units to stop the problem. |
Thread: What is "Mathematics" |
29/05/2022 11:37:02 |
Let's be honest, we are only where we are today because our early relatives did things 'empirically ' , without the precise knowledge of 'mathematics ' to predict what would happen if they built them that way. Sometimes they went wrong , Tay Bridge , Tacoma , Comet 1, etc. |
Thread: Extra Royal Mail Delivery Charges |
29/05/2022 09:33:43 |
Nothing so bad as what happens if you send a standard letter/birthday card to Belgium correctly. That is with a the Customs Declaration CN22 properly attached. The recipient will get sent a Demand to Pay 18 euros for onward delivery. Totally illegal for items of less than 18 euro value but they do it anyway. However , if you IGNORE the rules and simply send the letter WITHOUT the CN 22 form , it will go through their system to the address without problems. |
Thread: Tools needed to build a 3 1/2in gauge Tich |
06/05/2022 19:48:08 |
I would try to find a design with outside valve gear , valve sitting on top of cylinder. You will know why when you come to .make minor changes to your inside valve gear .settings.
|
06/05/2022 16:47:42 |
Being brutally honest here , don't confuse small with easy. And if you do decide on Tich make sure EVERY drawing dimension is right because LBSC used a very special ruler for his dimensions. A Gauge 1 Project is a guaranteed confidence builder , and it works. Then build your bigger locomotive. |
Thread: Galvanic Corrosion |
01/05/2022 11:03:41 |
As said, too late to stop the problem now but the 'ignorance' of designers ' to foresee the problem continues. Entry of moisture /electrolyte down to molecular size is the enemy , permanent contact of oil/grease the friend .. |
