Thread: WM16B Draw Bar |

...Incidentally I find that a 7/16" af hex.socket fits the square nicely, which speeds up tool changing by allowing the use of a ratchet. Same here with my WM16; have used socket with a 1/4 drive ratchet, 6" long handle, no need to apply 'ooomph' with any potential to kinetic energy transformer, & only tighten with the lightest of 'nips' George. |

Nice clamps. 1m looking at making a few of them myself soon for some welding aids instead of G clamps. I have the frames drawn on cad so far. Are those the papacad drawings? Yes they are Papacad drawings. George. |

Have put the beam engine on the back burner 'till the new year, just can't seem to get it right. have started on making up some Kant clamps to supplement my clamping tools...most of the bits are from the scrapbinium box apart from the side frames which were cnc cut, many thanks to member Geoff Adams down in Hampshire... Decided to use brass hex instead of knurled MS... bit of blingy look.. Frame spacers to make, brass grippers to make.. George.

Thread: warco WM 12 or Amadeal XJ12-300 |

Hi Jose; I can concur with Mike & Chris comments; I have the WM16, bought as a package along with a WM 250V-F from Harrogate exhibition back in 2012, both having served me admirably since. I would have gone for the WM18 but at the time the difference in price allowed me to 'tool up' to a certain degree. You also have to factor in tooling, it can soon rack up the same cost as the mill by the time you buy a set of hold down clamps, machine vice, collet set ( certainly worth it ) slot & end mills, DRO's for X & Y axes ( certainly helps with ignoring backlash ), plus many other 'nice to have' items. My floor has grey floor paint on it plus covered in those foam tiles that you can get from M/Mart ( usual disclaimer ) keeps the cold from rising & the plates of meat comfortable. George. oops typo. Edited By mechman48 on 26/12/2020 17:44:29 |
Thread: Workshop time |
26/12/2020 17:40:39 |
I manage to get a couple of hrs a day through the week 2 - 3 days. In winter I have the oil rads on for an hour before going in; a nice & toasty 18*C. I find that most of the time is setting up to do a particular machining job than actually doing the machining,e.g. am making a pair of Kant clamps & setting up & machining/drilling/tapping the spacer posts soon used up 2-3 hrs in the man cave. Surprising how time flies when you're having fun George. |

Thread: New scam to beware of |
06/12/2020 14:47:49 |
I've had various 'phishing mails' this past week, Bit coin a/c, BT a/c etc, yesterday I got one from the FBI in the USA; stating that I was owed 10.5 million dollars ! so along with Bitcoin saying I have £14,700 in my a/c ( no account by the way ) I'm filthy rich... NOT! .. It's that time of the year I'm afraid, just be vigilant. George. |

It's that time of the year; I've had approx' 9 emails this past week, Bitcoin a/c ( I'm filthy rich ! ), McCafee anti virus, Bull guard anti virus, & inc BT a/c ( not with them ) a lot are phishing scams to get you to sign up, all deleted. I work on the principle if they are genuine they will send a letter. George. |
Thread: Workshop temperature - cold |

I have converted my single attached garage 17' x 8' as my 'hobby shop' the walls have been studded & lined with 'Celotex' insulation, boarded out with OSB, as is the loft space which is insulated with 4" 'space blanket' I have foam rubber tiles in the floor which keeps the 'plates of meat' off the cold concrete. I have two small oil filled rads, one at ea. end which I switch on for an hour before I venture in, which are set to reach 16* C then switch off, nice & cosy, I don't like cold!. Saying that I do wear an over t shirt, extra military style cargo pants on top of my 'house trackies & safety trainers with thick soles & if I am using the lathe I wear a ware house type coat. Thread: Level of qualifications in the UK |
25/11/2020 15:44:19 |
Hi Mario Various reasons; but the over qualified is quite common, I've had that response a few times over the years & I don't have a degree. It sometimes depends on the person looking at your qual's if they think that you are better qualified than them then self preservation creeps in, 'Hmm this person is better qualified than me, he might take my job' cynical I know but I can vouch from personal experience. Another experience for this is that you may encounter 'ageism' yes I've had that too! after some digging around that was the reason I didn't get 'that job' on more than one occasion; it does exist here in the UK. Another aspect is that with todays economic trend companies tend to look for the younger market where they can pay minimum wage whereas we older ( a lot retired Inc me ) generation know the value of our skills & Qual's on the world market thus tended to ask a higher rate of pay. A few members will no doubt castigate my cynicism but boy oh boy It's a cruel world out there & if the companies involved in globalisation have their way, more is yet to come, 'ce la vie' . Never the less I wish you well & hope you find success in your efforts & find 'that job' I'll get down behind the parapet now & put my helmet back on. George. |

Thread: What am I? |

In one sense it was correct but those days are long gone. Engineer is a generic term used these days; I never went to uni but have worked in the field as an 'engineer' after being promoted into the role, with all the associated responsibilties, in the Middle east, I don't have a degree just HNC.There are many roles that use the title; auto engineer, computor engineer etc, these can be likened to car mechanic, IT specialist, a plumber is often called a 'heating engineer' I suppose in the realms of having the experience a house wife can be called a domestic engineer, A drain cleaner 'sewage engineer' Nurses these days are expected to get a degree to carry out straight forward nursing,so do we now call them 'Nursing engineers' when back in my youth all they needed to be was SEN & SRN. My progression titles through the business was Apprentice fitter/ turner, journeyman, plant fitter, Marine Engineer ( Jnr & 4th, didn't need a degree for that job ) Maintenance Technician, Snr Specialist Machinist, gas turbine engineer etc. so as far as job titles go.. how long is a piece of string ?. At the end of the day if a Co. advertises a role as '******* engineer' & someone turns up with the best suitabilty / experience for the job, be it he/she is/was a fitter/electrician,technician then in my experience they can be called ***** Engineer George. |

So far the only gripe I have with MTM & subscriptions is.. They send me reminders to renew 4 months ahead of original subscription date, i.e Oct/Nov compared to orig' subs' date of Feb, why is this, do they need to pump up their business profit margin before the end of the year ? George. |
