John Stevenson sharpened some end mills, at a show, for me, in a matter of minutes. Didn't stop me being careless. Just wish that I could justify the cost of such a useful machine! Howard
+1.. me too ! last Harrogate exhibition. George |

Why not attach it at the top of your mill head, then you have the readout directly in front of you & away from swarf/oil/ ingress, the magnets should hold it securely enough & the cable is long enough?. George. |

I have done the similar adaptation for my lathe tailstock & cross slide readings; work just fine for the cost of these, apart from buying Neodymininimuummmm magnets George. |
Thread: Flat bottomed hole with a boring bar - technique? |

If all I want is a drilled hole (not to bored accuracy) I just grind a drill bit square across the tip. Drill with a conventional drill to size and then use the modified drill to square the hole off. (If doing this on a drill press freehand it's helpfull to have the modified drill part way down the hold before switching on) regards Martin Make sure you have the drill vice fastened securely as the modified drill bit WILL grab & try to throw your vice across the workshop due to no chisel point on the tip. |

Phil, your link works fine. exactly what I was asking about. George |

I'm putting one of these LCD DRO's on my Xmas list, Has anyone fitted one of these & are they better/worse than digital readout. Looking on youtube these have a graphical display for its functions so you can see where the cutter/drill is rather than setting to zero & inputting digital figures.

Thread: Low cost swarf guard/dovetalk protectors for Mini Mill? |
11/03/2021 11:32:35 |
I normally wear slippers in the house but I use a pair of 'Crocs' to go to the garage/man cave then I swap them for a pair of safety trainers, I also put on a pair of cargo pants over my 'joggers' plus donning a warehouse / lab coat with the sleeves rolled up. as for the swarf issue my soluton was to use a piece of formed acrylic to use as a guard.. ..Yes, I've already had the 'fish tank' comments, but it does the job. Thread: ER Collet choices |
05/03/2021 18:53:50 |
I have a WM16 mill ( 2012 ) & use a ER25 collet set in it. I also have a MT4 collet holder for the headstock of my WM250 V-F lathe, I have both Stevenson square & hex collet blocks, I'm one of those 'nice to have it 'guys; & have the hex block semi permanently mounted in my 3 jaw chuck, does all I need it to. Dependent on dia' ensure that the ends have a suitable chamfer to enable good filling of joint, e.g. vee or 'J' joint, as in stick welding. In the past I've also used Duncans method, plus using epoxy resin, two part metal filler, whatever is to hand that will give a strong enoigh joint. Where needs must I s'pose. George.

Duncan, Would a solid float work, sitting on top of the water? Good luck, Bear.. That would be neat, but what would I make it from bearing in mind it will be 4mm diameter or less. The simplest method works best, have a look at... 4mm Diameter Solid Delrin Polyoxymethylene (POM) / Celcon Plastic Balls Simply Bearings Ltd.. work on the acronym 'KISS' . Sometimes projects are over engineered where 'simples is as simples does' to closely paraphrase a line from a well known movie. George.

Thread: Home Made Rear Toolpost Issue |
02/03/2021 16:39:19 |
It was made to the drawing supplied with kit & as I recall it was 7*. It may not look it on the pic but it was propped up at the rear so there's probably some parallax error in there... George. |

I made mine from the Hemmingway kit; one side has an angled slot , but I found that this created too much overhang & altering it moved the centre height out of position so I used the horizontal slotted side with a different holder which allows me to alter the over hang without losing centre height.. Leaving the centre height as shown produces too much over hang.. George. |

Yesterday & today. Have had a lot of back lash on my WM16 mill fine feed worm drive since day one ( 2012 ) but lived with it since. I decided to sort it as best with out removing the whole worm drive; it measured up at nearly 1.2 mm before the drive engaged ,yeah I know more than excessive. I made up a brass washer to take up as much slack as I figured .041" ~ 1 mm & fitted that, back lash is now down to ~ .4 mm so decided to leave it at that... for now! Also decided to remake the cover for my X drive motor from a near colour match 3mm plastic sheet; heat gun bent to shape, replaced a PWM with a new unit that has a on-off-on switch & fitted a numbered dial, looks much better than the original stainless steel version, Original pics in album 'X' drive.. Fine feed washer... Only small stuff but off the Tduit list. George. |

That sounds do-able. What about the stuff that looks like horse hair? Good for threaded maleable iron but might expand too much and impead the shaft. Do you mean plumbers hemp; usually used in conjunction with ' Boss white' sealant, IIRC more for cast iron or galvanized fittings. |

Bo'sun...'Just wish they did one with larger stock holding capacity up to around 30mm dia'. Could you possibly machine the 'V' to accommodate your larger size 24 - 30 mm is a 3 mm face cut ea. side of the vee ? looking at the Arc page it looks as though there's just enough material left on ea face to do it. George.
