Thread: vertex va4 or k4
15/05/2012 18:36:47

Hi All,
I'm thinking of replacing the cheapo vice on my x3 mill. I've narrowed it down to a Vertex VA4 or Vertex K4. My question is; Is the VA4 worth the extra money? (approx £60). Apologies if some of you have read this post before, I'd previously added it to an old thread.

thanks
alex

Sory John,
i didn't mean to hijack your thread. I've had no response to my question so perhaps I should start a new thread.

Hi All,
I'm thinking of replacing the cheapo vice on my X3 mill and have narrowed the search down to a Vertex K4 or a Vertex VA4. The VA4 costs roughly £60 more than the K4. Is it worth the extra cash or should I go for the K4?

thanks

Thread: Issue 4422
27/01/2012 21:04:18
Hi Neil,
I'm a field service engineer with Xerox, I work for the production services group repairing and maintaining large factory based printers. Most of the paper transports in these machines use belts running on convex pulleys. I can't recall having any problems with the design of this kind of system other than worn belts and bearings as one would expect with machines handling circa one million prints per month.

Hi again Wolfie,
I must confess I've skipped chapter six (sorry Harold) only because I was given a boring head.

Hi Wolfie,
thanks to harold for that explanation, I was struggling to put it into words, the reason i went for the m12 thread was that you can still use the clamp plate as originally intended with a 10mm stud. I would post a pic to clarify if only I knew how.

Ps; thanks Harold, I'm just about to buy the material to start the project in chapter seven, l think this will be a useful addition to my shop (garage)

kind regards

Hi Wolfie,
well done, I made the same set from the book a few months ago. I've since tapped some of the round holes in the clamp plates to m12. This mod allows you to use a m12 bolt as a jack screw. I've found this to be quite useful.

Thread: To CNC or not to CNC - that is the question.
13/01/2012 00:56:15
Hi John S,
thanks for that, It was the X & Y i was worried about. I didn't realise it was as simple as using a double ended motor with a hand wheel attached. As to the Z, am I right in thinking that the stepper is mounted at the top of the column and if so would the normal Z hand wheel still be operational?

sorry if that was another stupid question but I'm struggling to get my head around the physical aspects of converting my machine. I've read most of the articles in mew with great interest however i can't seem to grasp the relationship between size of motors, driver boards and power supplies.

thanks again

Hi John S,
I suspect you've heard this question a million times but here goes again. If i convert my X3 mill to cnc would i still have some form of manual control for quick one off jobs for example when i want to use it as a drilling machine? I already have a pc in the workshop which just by chance is parked next to my X3 and I've seen kits advertised on the web to convert this mill to cnc but I'm still fond of twiddling the handles. So my real question is; Will I be able to switch between manual and cnc?

Thread: Dehumidfier in shed would it help?
06/01/2012 18:21:38
Hi Duncan, I'm in Glasgow and have struggled for the last three years to stop my machines from rusting. Last year i tried a product called metalguard from chronos  or arc ( usual disclaimers)
I've had no problems with surface rusting since. I don't bother covering them up anymore. The one note of caution i would add is that if you try it, wear a mask and ventilate the shed whilst you paint it on cos it stinks to high heaven.

Thread: Cadmium, simple test for?

I don't think we should be too worried about cadmium poisoning. Let's face it, most of us don't buy green bananas these days.

Hi Len,
thanks for the reply however I'm not talking about the flashing ads (annoying as they are). I'm talking about the ads running down the right hand side of the page that superimpose themselves over previous posts if a long link has been posted (sorry Ady, no offence). There are lots of other posts regarding this problem on this site but nothing seems to be getting done about it.

ps; sorry to the op for having a rant ( I've had snow on monday and tuesday, hailstones on wednesday, hurricane on thursday and in-laws on friday)

Hi all,
this site is beginning to do my head in. I can't read the above posts because of the ads. I know this is an old problem and the 'suits' will just tell people to stop posting long links but will they ever fix it?

Thread: Stationary Engine for Beginner
02/12/2011 08:05:29
Hi Terryd,
I've just finished my first engine a stuart 10v and had planned on buying a s50 kit next. however i think a bit more practice on something cheaper would be better for me. I paid approx £100 for the 10v kit but then made a mistake on the cylinder casting and had to spend another £17 to replace it. I have a reasonable selection of bar stock, so hopefully i can make a start as soon as the books arrive.

thanks again

i've just ordered both books.
