As i originally suggested a circular test slip with a handle for ease of positioning if used in the vertical position which would appear to be the correct means of use. Added benefit it prevents the slip from rolling and potential damage if it drops on to a hard surface. Robert Butler

Thread: DRO kit for Myford S7 from Machine DRO
16/06/2020 18:11:27

Dear Bill, I'm not sure the brackets are supposed to fit together, the commonality is restricted to hole centres for the encoder, the rest is an intelligence test to enable the DRO to be fitted. I spent ages on the web and posted enquiries on this forum before designing my own fitment. I think the way forward is to see how someone else has done it and work around that. I have a positive surplus of unused brackets supplied with the X, Y and Z axis.

Regards

Robert

I have recently fitted my RF 45 milling machine with a Z axis DRO, having previously fitted the X & Y axis using components supplied by Machine DRO including the 3 axis console. The X & Y axis was fitted using the cast alloy brackets and other fixings and adaptors.

The Z axis was fitted to the front of the gearbox using two alloy brackets I made and fitted to the top and bottom of the gearbox. Two 8mm linear bearings were fitted to the brackets to support an 8mm guide rod to which the encoder was fitted using an alloy bracket I made. The magnetic strip was fitted to the profiled strip supplied by Machine DRO and secured between the top and bottom brackets using alloy angle. The 8mm support rod was attached to the quill shoe using a folded steel and alloy bracket I machined to fit. Provision for minor adjustment and alignment was provided and everything fitted together nicely and the quill returns sharply when in drill mode.

It looks workman like and not cobbled together and works.

One has to bear in mind we are fitting DRO's to machines which were not designed with this in mind and for Machine DRO to supply custom brackets to allow fitment to the massive range of machines we use (lathes or mills) would be out on price grounds. Before purchase it is a good idea to look see how someone else has done it and usually with the supplied brackets. Robert Butler

Thread: Myford Lubrication... yet again!

Andrew Thank you once again. Robert

Thank you Andrew, that is the same oil gun, I have the spring and on further investigation the seal is present in the nozzle. What appears to be missing is the valve or ball bearing attached to the spring. Is it a ball bearing or valve? Can you kindly confirm please. Thank you again Robert

12/06/2020 17:37:28

Dear Rod thank you, regrettably the oil gun i have is the current metal cased oil gun shown on the Myford website and this is a modified version of the Wanner oil gun. I am grateful for the time you have taken to help. Robert Butler

Me again! I contacted Myford, but they were unable to help as the Wanner Guns are modified by an outside firm and therefore the Wanner drawing is irrelevant. Has anyone dismantled the Myford nozzle and ascertained what components and in what order they are placed within the nozzle and spout. If so I would be grateful to receive this information. Thank you Robert Butler

Gentlemen the Wanner Gun is modified by or for Myford has anyone dismantled the Myford modified gun and can identify the components fitted in the spout and nozzle. Any help would be appreciated please. Robert Butler

Dear Maurice, thank you I had found the website but missed the drawing. I have also found the UK agents as well. Thanks again Robert.

Dear Maurice thank you for your reply, regrettably the Myford Wanner gun has a long nozzle but only 7mm outside diameter which is useful for access. I think perhaps there is a ball bearing which fits in the tube to which the nozzle is fitted trapped between the spring and the nozzle. I wouldn't expect a more sophisticated valve given the small diameter of the delivery tube and nozzle.

The reason for the posting was to establish if a ball bearing was fitted and if so the diameter.

Gentlemen the ongoing Myford issue, when I swapped my ML7 for a newer Super 7B a couple of years ago the new machine came with a nice shiny Wanner oil gun fitted with the Myford oil nozzle which seems to hold oil but only works effectively in the vertical position. It will not pump when held horizontally.

I resolved to sort out this problem over the weekend as access to the rear saddle oiler is very restricted due to the fitment of the Machine DRO and the Wanner gun and Myford nozzle permit good access. I gently removed the nozzle and noticed the presence of a spring fitting between the nozzle and spout but no evidence of a ball bearing or other type of one way valve. This would explain the gun working in the vertical position but not the horizontal position. My guess is the nozzle was dismantled and the ball bearing or one way valve misplaced. If the valve is in fact a ball bearing does anyone know the diameter please. Also common sense would indicate the ball is fitted nearest to the oil gun.

Any help would be gratefully received. Thank you. Robert Butler
