TWF if you refer to my earlier post commencing much the same problem whilst the replacement "original Myford new old stock " imperial cross slide screw and nut was better than the" new Myford" screw and nut having used the lathe again recently it is inferior to the original metric screw.

I think the old stock item was "work in progress" at Myford before the Nottingham factory closed, the Myford process was one of selective assembly and maybe lapping.

As I mentioned in my post I converted my machine to imperial, replacing all components, the top slide was perfect. I have since fitted DRO and will probably revert to the metric feed screws as they were as good as anyone could reasonably expect.

The earlier 45 degree and 90 degree angles and accurate sizing could have been achieved using the Unimat 3 lathe only which was dealt with in the earlier postings. The 90 degree setting in either axis with accurate sizing and repeatability should be achievable using your Proxxon milling machine with suitable jigs or stops, simples!

Iain, replace with standard screws and grind a screwdriver (turnscrew to fit) and have a couple of spares just in case the previous owner slipped already!!

If it bothers you, use thev jacking pieces from a clamping set with scrap strips to balance the work. perhaps ungainly!

Jason B, Quite so, and the operation described can be achieved at one depth setting, hence repeatability of alignment is not an issue. Further for better or worse you gain a lathe with loads of accessories and all in a very tiny package which also seems to be an issue.

The lathes website carries an image of the lathe motor attached to the mill. Put your hand out of bed! BUY THE UNIMAT so that we can all get some sleep!

1. The Unimat 3 milling attachment uses the motor detachable from the lathe. See lathes website

2. Lathes are useful and the Unimat is very tiny

3. The advert describes and pictures the separate, detachable table which is used for milling and is described as such

4, Assumed you are referring to dovetail rather than 'tongue & groove'. Given that your original intention was to mill a 45 degree slope on thin material, the loss of register using a circular column is academic

5. They don't make the Proxxon BFW36 'any more' either

Members have suggested/discussed just about every small machine and method of manufacture available including the Proxxon and only the latter seems to have any appeal to you so buy it.

Rather a general question which appears to relate to hand tools. The correct answer will depend on the edge you are trying to create or restore. Tormek have a good reputation and have a vast array of jigs (at suitable prices!) and their instructions are concise.

The Proxon Mill is around £350 the Gravograph device is £150 + carriage. The OP suggested he didn't wish to acquire equipment which would have no further use after completing the exercise. The Proxon depending on future intentions may be of no further use as it is only intended for light use on small components and £200 more expensive! The Gravograph machine would appear to be exactly what is required and the Proxon a compromise. If the project is of prime importance buy the Gravograph, job done.

John Smith 47, Bill made the suggestion you now appear to be considering on page 1! or perhaps not. Without doubt Tungsten Vanadium will be the best material possible.
