Very good service. They are likely aware (they are now) of the limitations of that batch of carbon steel dies, but good of them to supply a higher quality die as a replacement. I’m sure you are a happy customer as a one day delay in the job is not important. They did not make much (read that as ‘any’ ) profit on that sale, but have a) retained a customer and b) will have gained with the positive publicity on the forum.

Well, all new to me, but interesting stuff.

If I get lobulation, I shall probably visit the doctor for advice.

For my birthday, our daughter gave me several years of Model Engineer, dating from 1944 to 1950.

In the 26th December 1946 issue there is an item on universal joints. In the text it refers to fact that for the output to match the input, in terms of instantaneous speed, the forks on the ends of the intermediate shaft should be in line, so that the speed variations introduced by one joint will be cancelled out by the other. This is on the basis that the angle of the joint at each end of the shaft is the same.

Figure 5 illustrates this arrangement.

I did my own PCBs as they are very cheap to get made in China and I don't want the hassle of doing surface mount, the boards will probably be cheaper than just the postage to cover the boards from the states.

I used a 2.8Nm NMEA23 stepper mounted direct to the leadscrew on my mini WARCO lathe and although I've not done any threads yet is works fine as a power feed driven from an Arduino.

Just an update on my powered feed project, I came across this video on Youtube

I bought the TI LaunchPad board and designed my own, through hole, PCB for the interface and am just waiting for the PCBs to arrive.

Thanks Brian, that looks like just the way to go. I'd obviously like to do things as cheap as possible but while repairing is cheaper and probably easier (when taking modification-to-fit into account) , I think the rapid oscillation to and fro of the table might be a bit too violent for braze recuts or imperfect forms of grub screw recuts. I did read somewhere of special nickel/silicon weld rods being very good for cast iron repairs but not sure about that and actually not sure what type of iron/steel my rack and gears are made of...

You can save money by parking at Hampton in Arden or Tile Hill (Coventry suburb) and getting the train.
