Another go for the images. All the images are good for me now. PCB looks good. What is the power rating of the resistors you have used? |

. . . . . . the Nema24 stepper rated at 4 Nm is only giving 2.3 Nm so slightly underpowered, the supplier refunded the money & let me keep the motor. .. . . . . Tony
Could you increase the torque by gearing down the motor?

Thread: Would you buy one of these collets? |

I thought many people had migrated to the ER series of collets nowadays. Obviously not. The grip of an ER collet is parallel over a wide range. |

Very good service. They are likely aware (they are now) of the limitations of that batch of carbon steel dies, but good of them to supply a higher quality die as a replacement. I’m sure you are a happy customer as a one day delay in the job is not important. They did not make much (read that as ‘any’ I'll second that. |

Well, all new to me, but interesting stuff. If I get lobulation, I shall probably visit the doctor for advice. Neil I'm advised you can get tablets for that.

Are you actually "locking" the collet into the nut before you're inserting the work-piece? The nut should draw the collet out of the body when you unwind the nut. |

For my birthday, our daughter gave me several years of Model Engineer, dating from 1944 to 1950. In the 26th December 1946 issue there is an item on universal joints. In the text it refers to fact that for the output to match the input, in terms of instantaneous speed, the forks on the ends of the intermediate shaft should be in line, so that the speed variations introduced by one joint will be cancelled out by the other. This is on the basis that the angle of the joint at each end of the shaft is the same. Figure 5 illustrates this arrangement. Howard .
Can we see Figure 5 please. |

I did my own PCBs as they are very cheap to get made in China and I don't want the hassle of doing surface mount, the boards will probably be cheaper than just the postage to cover the boards from the states. I used a 2.8Nm NMEA23 stepper mounted direct to the leadscrew on my mini WARCO lathe and although I've not done any threads yet is works fine as a power feed driven from an Arduino. How many did you have made? What sort of price were they? |

Just an update on my powered feed project, I came across this video on Youtube I bought the TI LaunchPad board and designed my own, through hole, PCB for the interface and am just waiting for the PCBs to arrive. Edited By Phil Grant on 29/09/2019 11:17:19 That's the system I'm currently in the process of fitting to my S7. I doing the mechanicals at present. I'm hoping a **LINK** driving through a pair of 1:1 skew gears will be sufficiently powerful. |

How are you planning to get the three phase? I'd be inclined to run it as a delta wired motor with the more commonly available (and thus cheaper) VFD. |

Worth keeping and sympathetically restoring. Collectable item from the 1930's known as a Shell Duo. There is one on ebay at £695 with plenty of detailed pics of the oil can Bill
Edited By 34046 on 22/09/2019 10:23:03 There's many items for sale on E-bay at what seems silly prices to some people. Will that petrol can sell at that price? |

Thanks Brian, that looks like just the way to go. I'd obviously like to do things as cheap as possible but while repairing is cheaper and probably easier (when taking modification-to-fit into account) , I think the rapid oscillation to and fro of the table might be a bit too violent for braze recuts or imperfect forms of grub screw recuts. I did read somewhere of special nickel/silicon weld rods being very good for cast iron repairs but not sure about that and actually not sure what type of iron/steel my rack and gears are made of... Unless very specialised heat treatments are carried out welding CI invariably leads to the formation of brittle carbides at the edges of the welded area. CI repairs should be done with nothing hotter than brazing techniques. See **LINK** and part 2.
