Hi Has anybody built the clarksons engine. Black gates have the castings but the drawing seem low on detail. Is it an easy engine to build? Any thoughts?

I need to drill and fit a taper pin between a piston rod and cross slide collar. The taper pin is 1/16" x 3/4" Do i drill 1/16" and then use a small taper pin reamer, then tap the pin in? Any info would be great.

Thread: Simplex Weight Shaft |
27/05/2011 16:10:46 |
Many thanks for your help John, I thought I had made another **** up!
I am not suprised! I am a complete novice and the loco is not a begineers project!
It would help if the drawings where corrected and updated, or how about a note telling the builder of the problems.
Better still let hundreds of people make the same parts that will not work time and time again!
Please could someone at Model Engineer get drawings updated!!

Thread: This months MEW are 3 CNC features two too many |
14/05/2011 10:03:58 |
I am a total novice, the reason i like traditional methods and not CNC and worse still DRO!!!!!!! is:
1. I enjoy learning traditonal skills
2. I like to fit parts with feel, rather than what the computers says!
3. Hand made items, using craft skils look and feel nicer
4. Sawing is good for you....Laser cutting is not for me
I jest, but I do hanker for engineering skills of days gone by. I enjoy what I do and I find basic traditional articles to be of great interest. However everbody has their own interest and thats what makes the world an interesting place!!!!
Of course the down side to my method of work is every part is a different size!!!!!

Thread: Clarkson Stirling Single 3.5" |
14/05/2011 09:46:24 |
I now have most of the wheels. It seems that Dave Goodwin made castings for the 3.5" Stirling Single. Are these for the Clarkson design or the Locomotive Design Co Drawings? Also does anybody now the tender wheel spec...i.e WS..... from the Dave Goodwin list.
Any ideas gratefully received!!!! ![]() |

Thread: Is it just me!!! |
13/02/2011 16:28:58 |
Hello,
I am fitting the slide bars to my loco, whilst trying to pack things out and try and get things paralell I thought am I the only one who producing far from show quality work.
I have learn't so much in the last five years, whilst also working and looking after the family, but I do feel I am fighting a loosing battle. Eventually all my 1/4" accuracy is going to catch up with me and end the project!! Still I am enjoying the learning, and I do that by making countless mistakes.
Anyway, how long did it take other members to become good and how many abanded projects have there been!!
All the very best |
