I have to commend Arc Euro by the way, a very efficient set up, ..........a quite decent mug of tea. Much recommended. The really decisive criterion - the shop tea. My experiences by mail order from them confirm that they are an efficient outfit, and a pleasure to deal with. Dennis Franklin

Thread: How did you ..................... Job back ground |
07/07/2012 11:02:32 |
Thank you Martin for your misguided belief that this lot are "Gentlemen" However, on a serious note, the fellas on this forum are a thoroughly decent crew who help we newbies directly or indirectly by their willingness to share their considerable knowledge and expertise. Thanks, fellas. Started my working life in a small engineering shop, then moved to another one. Then moved into accountancy, spent the next 40 years "cooking the books", and when I retired I decided to move into muddle engineeing, myself being on a scale of 12" = 1ft. Current project is an MJeng Bagnall tank in 'O' gauge, electrically powered. Dennis

I seem to remember that Pilkington's invented it in the 1950's. (I stand to be corrected on this) Dennis |
Thread: drawbar tightening- how hard? |

As Stub Mandrel advises, you need just a little nip with a spanner to tighten it. You ain't using a 4ft crowbar ! Dennis

Thread: Drill press advice? |

"The money you save on not buying the drill will make a sizeable contribution to the cost of the mill." Yes, fine, but how do I sell the idea to SWMBO ? Dennis |
Thread: Which lathe from these four? |
26/02/2012 12:49:25 |
Gordon, Another consideration, surprisingly, could be your age and health. Will you be able to handle large heavy lumps of metal when you complete them ? At approaching 70 (with brand-new heart bypass and pacemaker), I've resigned myself to small scale modelling, because I know I can handle the results. This is not intended as a put-u-off, but a realistic factor which MAY need to be taken into consideration. Dennis

Thread: Announcement from Arc Euro Trade Ltd. |

I endeavour to avoid looking at ARCs website on principle, because I know well that I'll end up buying something. All right, small beer stuff, but all helps the turnover.

Martin
I understand what you are saying and I applaud your recycling and generally frugal approach. The problem is though that all that takes time and time is what I find to be in short supply. My workshop and garage is already full of " stuff " some of which could probably be recycled. I expect in the end the easiest course will be to take it to the dump!
Regards
Norman
I suspect that most of us have that "save it just in case" attitude, whereas if we were honest most of it could go to the dump without being missed. (Keep SWMBO though, she might come in useful !

Also avoids the metal under the bolt head being gouged if the bolt turns.

And to all those who have given help unstintingly, grateful thanks and the compliments of the season to you all.
A nice little story heard this afternoon in my local hardware shop. A woman went in for some coal this morning, and her little girl said "Mummy, you can't light a fire tonight, cos Santa's coming down our chimney". Charming and refreshing.

Thread: The Sandown Park Model Engineer Exhibtion 2011 |
10/12/2011 12:08:21 |
It is a very good show. I spent two hours walking round just looking, and I don't think I saw everything I could have done. If you haven't been already, get yer "bus pass" off that chair and get it down there, it is well worth it. There were a terrific range of models there, and traders are looking fer yer money, with some special offers. Not sorry in the least that I went, and the vintage bus from Esher station is a great help.
(PS - can someone make sure that the escalator to the upper floor is working all day. Some people have great difficulty with those stairs and the lift is not well signposted.)

Thread: MEW, would less be more? |
07/12/2011 19:19:08 |
Posted by JouniP on 07/12/2011 17:28:03: When I opened this this discussion, one of my thoughts which I did not mention was about writing articles. I would like to write one to MEW, and I have taken photographs for that. But as You have notised, English is not my mother language. If I write an article, it would not need just some editing, it would need major rewriting by editor. I think Mr Clark's schelude is far too busy for that. Only If there were fewer MEWs and if Mr Clark has more time for one magazine...
Yours
Jouni
Do not regard your command of the English language as inferior. I come across examples of English usage inferior to yours, written by people whose mother tongue is supposed to be English. Any article you write might need tidying up, but probably not a major rewrite. After all, we do not know the standard of English used in the articles that the editor actually receives.

I'm happy wiith things as they are (says he wearing his tin hat). I'm reading Mick Knight's article for beginners with interest because I might learn something.
Two other points - If you aren't happy with the content, then get and pen some articles yourselves, instead of keyboarding moaning about it.
Also - For them as can read, a cheer for Diane Carney please, who has put 3 of the issues together, which some of you may have noticed.

Ramon,
For newer recruits like me - "I'm sure I could make something like that". You aim, and you miss, but each time you learn a little more, and eventually, and hopefully, become a tolerable machinist, or, like so many others on here, (yourself included), an excellent machinist.
I'm starting at the age of 69, and I've so much to learn. I have learned a lot from the fellows on here, and who knows, I might have something worthwhile to contribute eventually.
When you've done an excellent piece of work which pleases you and others, show it off. Then we can pick your brains and find out how you did so and so.
