Thread: Oil boxes needed

oil box.jpg

I am building the Princess of Wales loco which has the bogied version of tender. the drawings call for oil boxes to the axle boxes. I have manage to locate a photo of what is needed but I have no idea if these are comercially available items. Would anybody know if they are and if so where I can buy them from ?

Many thanks in advance

Thread: What did you do today? (2013)
13/05/2013 14:54:30

Well I finished it at long last ! ! ! !

Took me a while due to working away from home commitments but I got there in the end. Many thanks to Harold Hall. I have learn't so much whilst making the rest which will be a big help to me in the future hopefully. No great achievement compared to some of the work shown on this site but we all have to start somewhere I suppose.

I havent done the graduations to the dials yet. Thats another chapter.

Oh but I did finally work out how to post a picture into a posting so happy days all round ! ! !

Thread: Vermiculite board for hearth ?
29/04/2013 21:01:42

Thanks for the help.

Very much appreciated. I will be contacting CUP Alloys in the morning for supplies. I hadn't considered Thermalite blocks but I will give them a try at the price. So thanks for the tip Mike.

I'm still worried about holding everything in the right place during soldering but that will add a little more to the excitement I guess.

Thanks again

Dave

I am about to attempt silver soldering and have been looking through the threads on here which have been helpful. First I have to arrange a hearth and was wondering if vermiculite board is suitable, Will it absorb the heat too much? I see recomendations for light weight refractory bricks, Are these similar material and where can they be bought from.

Secondly the first job to be soldered is a box made from 1/8" thick BMS plate. The box has no lid and is for a frame stretcher. I am concerned about possible distortion and would also appreciate advice on how best to hold this together for soldering as I have four to make.

Box dimension is approx 3.5" x 2.5" x 1.5" tall.

Any advice or tips would be appreciated. I have a Propane bottle for the job.

Cheers

Dave

Has anybody out there built or is in the process of building the Princess of wales and is familiar with any known drawing errors.

I have just taken over a part built loco and made a start on the 8 wheeled tender and found two errors already which have caught me out.

If anybody could pass on information which may save me more heart ache I would be very pleased to hear from you.

Thanks in advance

Thread: Drill chuck taper
27/11/2012 17:04:01

Hi again gents

My latest problem is that I need to replace the chuck on my Walker Turner drill press. The chuck on there now is a rather worn Jacobs keyed type but I want to change to a new keyless chuck now. The chuck that is on has 6A33 stamped on to the body.

Myford can supply a chuck that is JT33 taper but they cannot guarantee that it will be the same fit as my original chuck marked 6A33. They have supplied me with dimensions of their taper which appear to be the same but can anybody clarify this for me.

Is the 6A just a model number of the chuck, What is the 33 relevance.

I can find referance to other chuck tapers on the internet but struggling with this one.

Hoping somebody can clear this up for me

Cheers

Thread: Replacement feed chart needed.
21/09/2012 21:10:00

John

Those laser charts are pretty damn impresive however beyond my capability or knowledge.

Kwil has very kindly offered to scan his chart and mail it to me when he has chance which is very much appreciated.

I may end up with the printed out sheet stuck on the wall as Bazyle suggests by the looks of things.

As usual it is amazing to see the amount of knowledge and assistance provided by this site.

Many thanks to all

Hi Again

I recently bought a Harrison M300. The feed chart as can be seen is way past its best and is unreadable at the bottom third.

Can anybody advise where I could get a replacement, According to Harrison the plates are obsolete.

I have emailed Dianne Carny about the possibility of having one printed ( price dependant )

Before I can even consider attempting to produce a replacement I need to have the missing information to hand. Would any of you guys be able to send me a scan or photo of your own plate so that I can at least have the information.

Many thanks

Dave

Thread: Sulphuric acid
22/08/2012 21:03:23

Sorry Dr Crippen your a bit late.

Acid has been sorted and will be off to its new home on friday.

Many thanks as usual for the amusement and assistance given by all !

21/08/2012 21:43:39

Evening guys.

I have come up against a problem. Several years back I purchased a large bottle of sulphuric acid ( Stupidly ) as I had intended to attempt some boiler work and other silver soldering jobs.

I now after several years of tiptoeing around it feel that I must make some attempt to get rid of it for my own safety.

The bottle has had barely any removed as I have only done a few small soldering jobs at home.

Can anybody suggest where I could safely get rid of it please. I dont think the local tip would be too happy to have it. Otherwise if anybody out there in the manchester area requires some then it is yours to have. Would the local secondary school take it ? I obviously have no COSHH sheets to go with it. I originally bought the bottle from Blackgates.

Any help or advise would be very much appreciated.

Cheers

Thread: Digital edge finder

Thanks for the information and advice from all.

I think I will stick with the conventional mechanical edge finders after all.

Many thanks

28/06/2012 17:18:22

I am at the minute considering buying an edge finder and I am keen on the idea of the digital type.

Has anybody any advice about them. Are they worth the extra money ? Are they any more accurate than the conventional type. Are there any specific makes to consider or avoid, Recommended suppliers even.

Any advice gratefully recieved thanks.

Thread: Harrison Electrical problem
24/06/2012 22:35:08

Thanks to everyone for offers of donations and also advice. It has all been greatfully recieved.

I have since found a UK supplier of bulbs on the internet. BLT direct .com . They have a very wide range of quite reasonably priced bulbs available and I have now placed an order with them.

I have no connection with the company but it may be of use to others.

Once again many thanks to all.

Stupidly. No It didn't occur to me. I saw the 40W but the rest was unreadable with my eyes. After a closer look you are correct it is a 25V bulb.

Many thanks for the assistance. Simple solutions are always the best. Even if they do make you feel stupid.

Regards

23/06/2012 19:43:15

Evening guys.

I have a Harrison universal mill with a wired in machine light attached. Last week the light stopped working and I naturaly assumed the bulb had died. On replacing the bulb this evening I have come across a small problem. The new bulb is recieving power but the fillament is only glowing a very dull red, in fact it is barely visable. This to me proves that power is reaching the bulb but I have no electrical knowledge whatsoever to proceed any further. I have removed the front electric panel. The switch at the front of the machine for the light is lit up and a low level humming can be heard from what I can only assume is a transformer ? The light is an original fitting and not a later addition from what I can see.

Are there any obvious solutions or is it just a case of old age. Can this be fixed relatively easily or is it time to buy a seperate work light. My other concern is that if this electrical fault is something more serious could it affect the rest of the machine in any way.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance

Dave
