Thread: What is a dot punch? |
17/11/2015 18:40:27 |

I think they are all covered by, 'Center punch', whether it is sharp pointed or obtuse pointed. Used for many functions I have found where an engineer has decided to center punch along a line to tighten up a gap or make a shaft fit into a hole better. I have seen bearings retained by center punch marks, good or bad I dont know but worked for the person doing it. Clive Edited By JasonB on 17/11/2015 17:46:28 It was common practice when doing my 'time' as a hgv fitter back in th early 70s to tighten up the spring hanger bushes in the spring eyes for the mot - I dought you'd get away with it now - probably a good thing Lionel Edited By Limpet on 17/11/2015 18:44:08 |

Love the popup. Brilliant idea, just what you want to stop you reading the interesting stuff. NOT Lionel |
Thread: problem with digital vernier |
15/01/2015 16:34:23 |
Russell I see where you're coming from my original comment was in response to 'hold it in your hands to warm it up' I agree normal battery changing should not degrade the battery noticeable. I wear gloves when handling coin cell out habit from my job Lionel |
14/01/2015 17:09:36 |
The resistance in the skin can vary depending on humidity, temperature etc. And depending how the battery is held it may only have a mm of distance. If you don't feel it's a concern for you Russell then ignore it. I handle coin batteries with thin cotton gloves Lionel i |

Posted by Jesse Hancock 1 on 13/01/2015 and before replacing it in your vernier warm it up in your hand you should be able to extend battery life.
This is not advised as the moisture in the skin can flatten the coin cell type battery if both sides are touched at the same time Lionel |
Thread: Stepper Motors |

Neil if you're thinking of doing astro imaging even the commercial goto mounts drift after a few minutes the method used to drive the mount is by focusing on a bright star (with a light splitter or another scope and camera - web cam) and driving the mount to keep the star in the same position relative to the scope It will then follow all night or until the clouds come Lionel |
Thread: elf and safety gone mad |
06/01/2015 21:26:39 |
I was attending a training course in Masstrict when we all stopped and looked out the window to watch someone standing on the top of a tall step ladder on top of a dozen pallets at the full height extension of a fork lift attaching a cable to the top of a pole. Luckily no one fell but we were all speechless |

Welcome aboard Chris Another option is to keep the workshop looking full so another machine is unnoticed this is supported with the Js theory. As a side while fiddling in the workshop the other day SWMBO actually knocked on the door and waited for a 'come in' before entering. I was dumbfounded. Lionel |
Thread: Milling Machine Trammel |

For those with plenty of the folding stuff I've seen adverts for a dual dial gauge to set up the mill trammel from Chronos £80 or £90 from memory Lionel |
Thread: Chester Machine tools - blood from a stone? |
01/02/2014 08:34:08 |
Looks like Chester has a more underlying problem I ordered a lead screw for my DB8 it took ages and ages most of the I was left totally in the dark as to progress. At one time being told "It's on the bench" It still took another two weeks to arrive that was the tail end of last year. The problem only seems to be with spares -- perhaps they'll take this onboard and look at their systems. |
Thread: Ally Pally show |

I'm with you all the way DAG. After all it's us punters that really have the say who we buy from. Just a note on models on the net and I do a lot of net searching both at home and at work it's just not in the same league as seeing something in the flesh it's akin to watching a film on the telly or going to the live show and 90% of us are prepared to pay extra for the live show. |

Terry I appreciate that the traders have high costs in attending these events and I also appreciate how mundane it can get when you've been to a lot over the years - perhaps as a newbie I'm looking at it from the perspective you did several years ago. I too went for ideas and to see what others are doing. down in Devon there's very little that goes on in the way of exhibition. I know Bristol is closer but work restricts me attending during the late summer to Christmas. But surely the more people that say how disappointing things are when comparing with different times the more others will be influenced and all the quicker will the shows go, what will the next generation of model engineers do then. |
22/01/2014 21:29:28 |
I went to the show on Saturday as a newbie this is my first show which I enjoyed a lot. I travelled up from Devon cost me approx. £100 in fares and entrance (not something to do every month)The another £150 on stuff!! But I have trouble understanding the logic of some of the people on here if they want good shows with lots of traders then they should attend whenever possible we've only got ourselves to blame - it's the old saying "use it or lose it - it's your choice" I shall be going again next year |
Thread: workshop heating |
12/12/2013 09:31:11 |
When I put my workshop up I realised it was only 2metres from thecentral heating boiler so I ran 2 x 3/4"pipes around the bottom - result lovely and warm not damp no rust - move the workshop Lionel |
Thread: 3 phase wiring anyone ?. |
19/10/2013 20:47:54 |
I'd agree with Martin, It all depends if the machine is wired in Star or Delta. Delta just uses the 3 phases and Earth and has a 4 pin red plug, as a quick check meter the resistance between any two phases (3 readings) they should all be the same. And each phase should be open circuit to earth You could also open the cover on the motor there is usually a connection drawing on the inside of the connection cover. Note if you get the phases the wrong way the motor will turn in the opposite direction. I would personally check the other end of the cable to make sure the Neutral really doesn't go anywhere. Do be certain of what you are doing ELECTRICTY KILLS very quickly, If in doubt don't attempt it.
