Thread: Who can transport a grinder M62 corridor?
01/08/2023 20:01:12

Hi Daedalus

There is a man near Halifax who might be able to help. I forget his full company name, something like 1 Tonne. He moved a Harrison M250 lathe for me with comparative ease. His name is Matt Smith, on 07957333097

Thread: Colchester Bantam Mk2 mech control linkage to fwd/stop/rev motor switch
20/07/2023 13:18:55

Hi James

I worked in School workshop and we had two Bantams, though they were the early 800 speed models. The mechanical switches with lever on the side of the apron always gave troubles and were unreliable so, as kids were using them, the mechanical switch gear and operating levers were removed and replaced with an electrical forward/ reverse switch and a push button on/ off switch. I can’t say that I really liked the arrangement but they never gave any trouble thereafter and were still working when I retired

Thread: Clarkson T&C grinder
08/07/2023 11:14:11

Hi Ian

A bit late to this thread but with regard to your lack of workhead for your Clarkson; your picture of the radius attachment shows that it has a spindle in place. If I am not mistaken this would be tha same spindle used in the workhead and so would be a good starting point for building your own workhead. If it is a Clarkson spindle it will be hardened and ground and by the look of the picture the spindle has a sleeve in it which Clarkson supplied for holding their cutters so you have a start for your cutter holding items. Hope this helps

Thread: Harrison M250 for sale
19/07/2022 23:17:21

Incorrect pricing in the ‘For Sale’ section. Price should read £5,500 , NOT £5.5

when typing advert it appears that the two final zeros in the price were omitted. Apologies.

Thread: Wonky threads using die
21/11/2021 19:35:54

If you have a faceplate and a three jaw chuck without a backplate could you possibly bolt the three jaw to the faceplate using bolts through the faceplate into the tapped holes in the back of the three jaw? Tighten the three jaw sufficiently to stop it slipping about the gently tap the three jaw until it’s periphery runs true then nip up the bolts tight. All adjustments done whilst turning the lathe by hand I hasten to add! I accept that you need some sort of dial gauge to get the chuck running true. However this might make an acceptable solution to having a three jaw on a temporary basis so would be useful for some of the other basic lathe work operations suggested in earlier posts such as the tailstock die holder.

Thread: Colchester Chipmaster 5x20. Hoping to buy.
19/09/2021 21:04:30

Had my Chipmaster about 4 years. I collected it myself using a hired mini digger trailer( suppose that was a 1 tone plant trailer). Used lever to get lathe on to steel pipe rollers then winched it n to trailer using a hand winch and straps. As I recall there were some bolt heads protruding below bottom level of lathe cabinet and these together with the three mounting pads did cause some trouble with snagging the rollers but with patience I worked around it. I had to as I had committed myself to that mode of removal and had no easy alternative. Once on trailer used pinch bar to remove rollers and strapped lathe to trailer. No problems returning home - 130 miles. If you do move it yourself make sure that you lock the lathe saddle to the bed and also make sure that tailstock is firmly clamped, or remove it. It didn’t happen to me butI did hear of someone losing a tailstock when using a similar removal method. Towing vehicle was a Land Rover.

Agree with all above regarding Chipmaster / Bantam as I have used both. Chipmaster scores for me as it has a clutch so no start stopping of single phase motor and of course higher top speed though I haven’t needed top speed very often. Down side to Chipmaster is very prone to oil leaks from both headstock and feed gearbox.

Thread: surface grinder
11/08/2021 13:40:12

I have had some success with a Clarkson T & C grinder ( Mk 2 ) for surface grinding without any modifications, other than having the Clarkson spindle extension (Clarkson accessory). Needed to purchase a small magnetic chuck about 5” x 3 “ top surface. Mine was an eclipse that magnetized both to machine table and workpiece. Mounted on T & C table and lightly ground top of mag chuck. Then used it to grind slide bars 5 “ long by 1/2” wide in gauge plate. Slow going and down feed took some controlling but very pleasantly surprised with results. Expecting to use same set up for other items in near future. Will try to post picture later but have an appointment at the moment

Thread: Milling machines - western-made s/h recommendations up to £2k
30/06/2021 12:52:27

Should have added to my previous post that my machine is a Horizontal with vertical head

Also agree that, if you can budget for DRO you need not worry if machine is metric or imperial

30/06/2021 12:47:57

Harrison Verticals which I have seen have a slightly longer table travel of 18” rather than the 15.5” of the horizontals. I wouldn’t want to try boring a 5” gauge cylinder on the vertical milling head / machine. Harrison verticals usually have higher spindle speeds more suited to smaller cutters. Both versions are really sturdy machines but some ex school machines can have suffered some abuse / may be worn.

With regard to capacity, have a look at my articles on cylinder boring in recent Model Engineer magazines back in April this year ( sorry, I can’t give exact issue numbers as I am away from home at present.

Thread: Learning CAD with Alibre Atom3D
27/11/2018 22:05:57

My subscription issue no 274 arrived very late. By the time I was thinking of getting around to trying Alibre issue 275 had arrived!

I cannot get alibre by using the instructions on P46 of issue 274. When I input www.alibre.******** it takes me to alibre website but there is no reference to MEW or 6 months trial. I am offered the standard 30 day trial but no other offer.

I have not been given a link to a license key so have got no where at all.

Any advice?
