Thread: blocked displacement/hydrostatic lubricator
21/06/2015 13:01:12

Just about finished pulling apart, cleaning and putting back together the hydrostatic oilers only have to refill with glycerin now, then test. Will be mixing the glycerin then diluting 50% with water before filling the oilers.

Once I remember how to post photos will show the results. Very fiddley.

Once again thanks, this forum is very handy.

Many thanks Julian I will try the syringe first , my guess is I will have to remove the whole set up as you suggested.

I was worried as well that the left cylinder might not be getting enough oil, I do not want anything to seize up.

I will keep you posted and try and post another photo when all is well.

Have a couple of new carriages 7.25 " gauge just built,  on testing on track the carriages keep coming off, especially on the curves and over the points.  Believe wheels are at fault, what do I need to check.  There is a bit of sideways movement of boogies.  Any ideas?

Thread: slag build up on fire grate
22/08/2010 15:06:52
I am still getting slag build up on the fire grate especially after engine has been sittting in the station for a while waiting for passengers.  We use brown coal, unable to source char very expensive here.  I rake the fire  every couple of runs.  Any ideas in how to reduce the build up.  Driving a Holmside 7.25 " pulling water from a tender.

Thread: Luton & District Model Engineering Society
21/05/2010 16:03:12
    Can you help?
I am trying to track down the Luton &  District Model Engineering Society.  Read an old article recently from the Luton News dated August 1953 which accompanied a picture of the club opening their new 3.5" gauge track in Crompton Avenue Leagraves.  The property was own by Mr H D Bond.  In the background watching a steam locomotive was my grandfather.  I believe the club is still operating more than likely at a different ground.

Any contact from members  much appreciated.

Any one got an ideal on how to stop ash from flying out the chimney of a Holmside, Hercules or Bridget style saddle tank engines.  I have looked at puting as ash collector on top of the chimney like the American locomotives have but it would look out of place.
Needs to look right. Currently driving a holmside and keep getting ash  coming back into my eyes after more than a couple of hours driving?  I clean out the pipes to remove ash after a couple of hours.  Using Collie Coal from Western Australia. Char is hard to get hold of and is expensive.

Thread: Boiler life
05/04/2010 09:48:21
Copper boilers maintained right should last a lifetime.  In Australia they are re-examined and certified every three years.  There are not many that fail.  If buying 2nd hand buy on the basis of the boiler passsing its test certificate and ask around at the club where it has been running, other members will know the history.

Thread: Hercules 0 4 0 7.25"
02/04/2010 09:17:33
On the Reeves web site they have listed a Hercules 0 4 0   7.25" steam locomotive but there isn't any picture or photograph.  Can any one help I am interested in how it looks.  Has any one built this engine.   From the information given could be a good passenger hauler.

Hello Weary,

Contact Australian Model Engineering at their web site,  they will be able to put you in touch with the Australian Boiler standards for Miniature Steam Locomotives.  The standards in Australia are very detailed all aspects are covered.
