Thread: Wrong colour top on milk containers

I thought the cardboard lids with the lift off tab were all "green".

Thread: Undersize thread
06/09/2022 07:48:45

I assume that you apply end load to the die holder whilst cutting and not let the newly cut thread drag the die along. And of course, you have the die the right way around, usually the engraved face is the leading face. Once the thread is cut, you can reverse the die to thread right up to a face.

Can you hold the two halves of the bearing together with the bearing bolts and then machine them?

Thread: ANTIFYRE Extinguisher Shipping?

I was told the story early on in my apprenticeship not to smoke over a bath of Carbon Tet as the heat of the cigarette turned the vapour into phosgene. This was discovered as operatives of the degreasing baths who smoked often had breathing difficulties as other non smokers didn't experience. Good old days of smoking in the factory !!

I think they changed over to MEK and then something else after that.

Thread: 12 volt electric motor problem
02/09/2022 16:24:03

Off Topic:- Some wiper motors do not have their brushes perpendicular to the commutator and when run in the wrong direction make the brushes jump up and down ie "courting disaster"..

David's motor is a WINDOW WINDER MOTOR . It would be interesting if David followed others advice and tried a 12 volt battery. If that still didn't work, reverse the 2 black cables and if that didn't work, probably bin them ??

Crikey - So you have passed it on without fully testing it !

Love it all the same.

Thread: Another Smart Meter thread.
31/08/2022 12:22:05

Our 'smart meters' are called LINKY, transmitting usage via the electricity cable network. No WiFi or radio connection. You can monitor usage via an app on your phone, but there is a 24 hour delay, so you can't see how much the oven or any other appliance takes .

The LINKY meter does have a 2 wire interface which can be 'read' by your own home grown hardware/software solution, or you can buy a WiFi link and pay for an app etc. The data has its own format and this has to be de-coded etc.

Lately, there is a move to additionally add an 'OffPeak' regulator. Obviously, when the off peak period arrives, all of France's off peak devices turn on causing a major blip in supply. That was not too difficult to forecast! By fitting this off peak regulator, it is supposed to see what the supply is capable of supplying, then turn on or off your off peak service but guarantee a certain minimum number of hours at that rate. The blurb says you will save money (Translated this means that in the future, electricity will only be cheap when the supply is not being used efficiently).

Of course, this is only useable for water heaters and radiators. wash machines etc would not work well being turned off and on during the cycle.

Thread: time to hang up my tools
31/08/2022 06:34:16

Best wishes Geoff. We moved to France 20 years ago bringing all my imperial stuff with me. When its time for me to dispose of stuff, what chance trying to off load imperial lathes and mill in metric land ! I have thought of changing over to metric, but would I get the use out of the investment at the age of 76 ?

My best hope would be to offer the lot at a silly price and include a free weekend's accommodation for an interested UK buyer as we are 10 hours away from a channel port. However, by that time, would imperial machines be of interest in the UK ??

Kit of parts for Boxford Lathe on auction site. Buyer beware, could be bits missing - didn't see a lead screw in the kit. Looks like some one had it away piece by piece ?? I wouldn't go overboard with the price though

Did you hope to machine your Rob Roy out of a solid piece of tool steel ?

Thread: Joining flat toothed belting
18/08/2022 16:55:04

This may sound very drastic, but could you cut the axle in half with a small angle grinder, then join them back together with a slip coupling. Being split, you could pass the belt between the split half and then join with the coupling.

Thread: Tie voltage rails
15/08/2022 10:47:08

John R - thanks for that link. It does explain in simple terms how to link the logic level shifters. In my diagram, I think that the logic level devices and the radio device should have their own dedicated 3.3v supply, and the 5volt supply from the Arduino. Tie the 5v supply and Grnd to the Arduino and the 3.3v and Grnd to both the logic shifters and radio card.

John, attached is my poor circuit diagram. (Ignore the comments on the diagram)

Thanks for the advice gents. It looks like I should common the ground for all devices, take the 3.3volt from the Arduino for the level shifters and provide a separate 3.3volt for the radio card so as not to fry the Arduino 3.3v regulator. In which case, not tie the two 3.3volt supplies ?

Of course, there are several circuits for the radio card on the net not using level shifters with other comments saying it may fry the radio card and or Arduino. Its a greedy little thing !

Dabling in electronics, Guidance needed (Again).

I am playing around with data transfer over wireless , using Arduino UNO and two 5volt to 3volt logic shifters and a 3 volt LoRa RFM98W radio card.

Spec Logic Shifter

In practice, the Arduino could have a USB cable attached to a computer and a 9 volt supply. The Arduino then regulates the supply to 5v and provides its own 3 volt line.

1/ Should I tie the Arduino 3volt output to both the logic shifters and the radio card 3 volt pins.

2/ same for the 5volt rail (excluding the radio card)

3/ same for the ground rail.

Thanks in advance

Thread: Boiler test
11/08/2022 19:47:49

Michael, please be aware that even manufactured nuts etc are made to tolerance, however I am not so sure how well the finished product is inspected. I bought some union nuts from one of our suppliers which would not fit other manufactured fittings before I ran a plug tap through them. I found it quicker to correct a dozen nuts than send back etc.
