Thread: V Belt Size

"Do you mean that different manufacturers measure and state the length be different methods? Mentioned in this thread have been references to inner, outer, and centre lengths (of the belt section). Each would obviously all give different results."

All I know that the times I have looked at a machines belts seen a number either imperial or metric sizing and have got a new belt same number on 50% of the time it hasnt fitted or is longer or shorter by more than I would expect

So I always take an old belt or a cut one the right length to be sure of an adequate fit

My local supplier a bearing and power transmission specialist always measure a belt rather than relying on the numbers

Maybe its a quality issue at the belt factory or a differing set of standards

I do buy quality european brands for my day job

Thats all well and good

but if you order a belt online using the size you have determined it may not fit ,particular on a machine with limited adjustment

Different manufacturers have different ideas on what makes a say A36 belt

28/05/2015 17:55:14

Absolutely John Shepherd

if only belts were all made equal

I do have large stocks of belts and usually ordering online as they so much cheaper order ones around the size I think I need

problem gets worse when you need matched sets of belts....they very expensive

27/05/2015 09:35:37

I have much the same problem many times

even 2 belts (new) having same numbers on differing manufacturers though will be so different in length

If you need to buy online its just looking at your too long belt and deciding how much shorter it needs to be and ordering the shorter length

so your z37 is supposedly 37 inches so if it looks like an inch too long then z36

I do have a local supplier so I cut an old belt to the correct length and take it in they have a jig on the wall to measure it

Funnily enough I took it upon myself to drain my hydravane thats in a garage today

A small amount of water shot out but then a small amount of air in spite of the tank being full ( 130 psi)

what stops all the air rushing out? its a 10mm bore valve...whats inside the tank around the drain

I've had a solonoid valve feeding an external watering system controlled by a time clock twice a day for 30mins for getting on for 24 years now....spring and summer months only mind

Same valve same time clock full 1/2" 15mm flow rate

you must have been unlucky with your valve

09/05/2015 22:52:26

Why not use a solonoid valve ?

Generally work on 750w to 1 hp so your motor is just over 1/2hp

electrical input does not equate to mechanical output

Cap should be wired in as diagram which sometimes is in terminal cover

Thread: Colchester capstan tooling queries
22/04/2015 13:28:41

Job sorted

the seller came round with an attachment head that bolts on to the top of my capstan and has 5 1" holes in it with all cam locks present

looks in fine condition so I'm well pleased now

Ian

Ronan

Yes its a model c ner a car

the capstan head with the 1" hole has been bored wrong

the seller insists that it came factory bored 1 1" and 4 3/4"

it certainly looks well done but all the 3/4 holes line up on centre but the 1" is down on centre height

so I may need to plug and rebore

theres not enough space below the diameter of the 1" hole to do as duncan or bazyle suggests without drilling deeper

its a shame because I wanted a 1" size for my die head

Thread: any idea what this is

Capstan speaking...That idea is used on startrite and fobco drilling machines for the tables and head but without a cut out in my tooling for the bolt it wont work on here...or does the tooling have a space cut out for the bolt to pass through?

Saxalby ...that looks just what i'm doing thanks for the picture is your tooling a parellel shank?

Jason...my coventry head has a 1" shank

Many thanks for the other answers

dsc00332 (medium).jpgdsc00329 (medium).jpgI have just aquired a capstan attachment for my lathe

I wanted it to use with a coventry die holder and for drilling jobs

how do I mount tooling?

theres 4 3/4" holes and 1 1" hole

I have made some 3/4" spindles to hold tools but what does the cam lock bolt look like....they were all missing

I made those slugs with a length of 31/64ths silver steel and machined away a 3/4" diameter bit to lock the holder in...just need tapping on top so a nut can pull it up.

Is this how it works?

But how to do the 1" hole as theres hardly any material left when i've cut a 1" scallop out

does anyone have one to show me what it should look like

John the MT holder would prevent you from holding longer lengths

the holders allow a long length to be held

I have a ER40 holder fitted to a backplate for a colchester lathe and very usefull it is
