I had the need for a longer rack (2ft) for a large fobco drilling machine I couldnt envisage what/how to do it with my workshop equipment a local gear cutter wanted £300 or so to make it assuring me that it was absolutely critical that the tooth form was perfect and any inaccuracys would lead it it jamming wearing quickly I think It was mr J.S who suggested cutting the teeth with my vertical mill and then setting the head over and then doing the angle 4 end mills later (3mm ones) i had cut straight down (100 teeth) 1st question what depth of cut and speed and feed should a 3mm endmill be able to cut in MS? I tried setting over the head but it was giving a dreadfull finish as the bit was moving rather than cutting So i bought a gear cutter suitable for a rack Thinking of ways to use it maybe mount a motor and gearbox on the mill spindle or a right angle drive Made an arbour out of 1" ms and mounted that in the lathe mounted my precut blank in the toolpost and gingerley fed into the cut....perfect 2 different heights on the toolpost and job done in 2 hours doing 5 teeth at a time before moving the blank in the toolpost Cutter was spinning at 210 revs... 2nd Q is that about right for a gear cutter 3" diameter hss cutting MS? This was as I progressed so I had the moving steady supporting the arbour turned the blank around and changed set up for the ends this the finished rack and the original which is only 10 "long and a sealey one I bought which worked fine but didnt look too good And this is it installed in the machine I've motorised the bed...absolute luxury switch gear mounted in a moveable box if it gets in the way it can move Edited By Ian Parkin on 06/04/2016 17:35:01 |

Very often inverters has a filter near the input connection you can switch/unplug this look in the book for instructions if the filter is installed it will trip the rcd |

Those holes in the video are very much like mine BUT i'm fairly sure that my holes are not put in after manufacture but as part of a pressing /moulding operation |

Theres only one label on each side They were clean yesterday morning when it arrived The staining is where my flange washers gripped the wheel I pulled /peeled the blotters back to see the holes after one blotter lifted slightly it was then that I noticed these holes

I have absolutely no idea what they are for ...thats why I was asking never seen anything like this before I have a total of 4 bench grinders and 1 TPG and have replaced wheels regularly as they get worn AS I said in my OP they are moulded in and are nice round and flat bottomed Chronos have confirmed thats how they are made..all their stock of these wheels is like that I have brought it to their attention and they have said they are OK to use Its a 5" small grinder I keep close to the lathe for touching up or modifying carbide bits I know all grinders are dangerous but I would be more concerned with a 8" or larger machine |

I'm sure that my wheel is as makers intended I cant believe that any stone maker would risk the dangers of a stone exploding by drilling holes in it to stop cracks spreading especially on a £12 wheel I'm sure as Chronos has said its part of the manufacturing process are wheels moulded early in the process ? and the holes are from the mould for whichever reason The wheel is definitately NOT cracked in any way It rings and it runs true and works well on carbide ...the reason I bought it |

Some more photos and a blu tack impression of the holes And the label which if its not clear is
1 125x13x31.75z 331556/ indistinct C60 J6U 40 m/s mos-6110 Supplier was chronus so hopefully they will respond to my email pictures today |

Right I pulled it off to investigate more and its definitely not cracked it rings as a stone should But theres another hole on the other side these are nice clearly made holes 8mm dia perfectly round and flat bottomed 5mm deep ones at 12 o clock and the others at 4 o clock on the other side these are put in during manufacture its a 125mm 13mm wide wheel and they are 32mm and 35 from the centre |

I bought a grren grit grinding wheel for a small grinder I had after mounting it the blotter flapped out slightly showing a hole is this ok? looks cast in I've never seen a hole before on a stone |

After ringing to order the part at clarke international it was out of stock however the chap said machine mart do have them in stock and gave me the number It was actually only £18.79 all in delivered from there !! |

Clarke international have just replied with a price of £24 all in delivered so not too bad
I had removed the spindle and it was on the vice drifting from the top so it was purely end force with the tapers pushing....I imagine that the chuck had never been out before and it may be rusted solid |

I bought an old clarke metalworker drill press sans motor but otherwise looks fine over the weekend with the intention of converting it to a tapping stand I had a geared motor 400rpm that i was going to put on and use it with a tapmatic head for tapping dutys rather than swapping out on pillar drill Trying to get the chuck out however..one last tap with the lump hammer on the drift and
