Thread: A milling machine problem |
17/02/2017 19:00:06 |
Given that Paul is in Canada the motor is probably star wired for 220v....here it would be 415v for star 240 for delta/mesh Could it be that the motor has been wired delta rather than star..that would cause it to draw too much current and get hot if Paul is feeding in 220v into his VFD |

I have a similar sized but slightly lighter mill the 30 size mill (240kg) I took it to bits to go in my car and carried it through the house down 13 steps into my workshop and then reassembled just about manageable by myself ..if you have a second person its easy to move bits of say 100kg on a dolly even over carpet with some new plywood. I would imagine your mill in 4 bits ...base ,table, column and head all will be less than 100kg each |

Thread: Colchester Student worn lathe bed |
01/02/2017 12:00:30 |
I wouldnt spend that sort of money on a mk1 I had a mk1 for 20 years it was worn out when i got it and it didnt get better with time However I sold it easily to someone who just wanted a single phase lathe to do simple things and he was delighted at £500 I bought a very unused Mk1.5 for a £1000 ( with lots of tooling which on selling i got my £1000 back ) spent a lot on it to get it perfect and fitted dro's I was at an auction last week and they had student 1800's and they only went for £400 ish whilst these machines looked rough ( paintwork etc) the beds were in sound condition. Before spending on your worn out example i'd look for a unworn one first

Well as requested i kept my replies to the 2 sizes you mentioned but I have all systems and sizes from er11 to er50...having said that in the larger sizes only the large collets.I find the smaller sizes easier to use but as i said there's not much to choose between er25/32 just the max size to be able to hold I cant imagine there's any difference other than a slight cost advantage to er25 but the first time you want to hold 17mm + you will then have to step up to er32 |
