Thread: Any one used a digital microscope for micro turning on a lathe

Well as i said it stays where its put

its sprung and counterbalanced if you knock it it moves but it swings every which way and lifts up or down and stays where you want it

I think this one was Very expensive new designed for a large heavy monitor on a desk

This my scope mounted on a monitor stand clamped to the ceiling joists its easily moved to wherever i need it

as i recall this was <£20 on eBay and stays where its put

This scope has a working distance of 7 inches from the ring light and fills the frame with my fingernail

I use a Zeiss operating theatre stereo microscope in my workshop mounted on a boom for the small things i do

it works great

I think that using a digital device means looking at a screen rather than live at your work /tool interface and there always seems to be latency problems with electronics

Thread: Repair required for Milling Knee
05/09/2019 12:55:11

Well i would clamp it together and assuming that the parts fit well together drill and bolt it with about 4 m8 or m10 bolts if you can get them in

use it and look for another machine to use for parts

i weld cast iron regualrly but thats a difficult one would need machining the dovetail after welding

Thread: Colchester student feed issue
03/09/2019 11:52:35

Yes when the chuck is turning

if the forward /reverse traverse lever is set

if the gearbox is set the lift up handle one

if the abcd levers are set

then the feed shaft should turn

set the imperial/metric lever and the lead screw should also turn

Do you have a gearbox for screwcutting?

Edited By Ian Parkin on 03/09/2019 11:53:43

03/09/2019 09:08:32

The feed shaft will only rotate if the gearbox is set

the only one that doesn’t matter is the metric/imperial selector

and forward /reverse lever needs to be set to one or the other

but the feed shaft will /should always rotate if the above is done

Sorry just reread your post it will only run when the main spindle is turning

motor turning no...it may have a clutch

Yes he was quite rude when i pointed out his rear brake linkage wasnt much good.

This is whats wrong with not having to have a mot for over 40 year old vehicles

people change things with no real idea of the consequences of their actions

17/08/2019 15:04:10

Says it tax and mot exempt

professional job

always passed mot’s

He’s asking 8K for it

Just seen this bike advertised on a local forum

have a look at the rear brake actuating rod..

wouldn’t want to be relying on that in a panic stop

Thread: Grid Frequency [mains electricity]
14/08/2019 10:19:21

I cant really understand why it needs complex algorithims and a mocked up supermarket and university researhers to realise that if you switch off a fridge/freezer for a matter of minutes then nothing really is going to happen to your stored food.

the original more indepth article in the paper rather than the online one i linked to suggested that the fridges were generating power to pump back in rather than just reducing demand

if just tesco are using 50 MW just imagine what the total load is over all of GB for all fridges and freezers industrial commercial and domestic

13/08/2019 14:35:56

Oldmart

reversing the mains input will do nothing to a synchronous motor’s direction but taking it to bits and reversing components will for your old bosses clock

Bazyle

in the guardian on monday was an article about Tesco’s being able to use their fridges to pump back in to the network to the tune of 50MW ..i’m Not sure what they mean by this perhaps they have big back up UPS’S to keep their fridges going in the event of a power cut

From the frequency website that micheal linked to I,d not heard of copper clad aluminium before I,d heard of alloy clad steel...

  • A significantly higher frequency, e.g 400Hz as used in aircraft, would cause skin effects in transmission lines and this would reduce their carrying capacity or result in unwanted heating. At 50Hz, the electricity only travels through the outer 9.2mm of a copper conductor, so anything larger than 18.4mm in diameter is a waste of material unless it is for mechanical strength. To reduce weight and cost, many large conductors are made from copper-clad aluminium so that the electricity flows through the higher conductivity copper skin while the aluminium core provides the mechanical support.
