Thread: Hardinge UK.....agh!

The 6206 as you gents quite rightly point out is a commonplace item until you want one that is C2 spec frown

22/09/2013 13:47:42

These people are... (insert expletive here) I ordered just one 6206 C2 RHP bearing from them Monday, September 2nd, despite them charging me £8.50 postage for "Next day delivery" I eventually had the bearing 13th September...... I did ask for a refund of their "next day postage" only to be told that the £8.50 "next day postage" is their standard min shipping charge?.

I had to make/send repeated calls and emails no contact from them to say there was a problem until I asked.....

No mention of Lawrence Sparey either... someone needs to fill in some spaces on that Wiki page.

Thread: bridgeport BR2J
20/09/2013 01:44:43

Ross, at £600 the price seems reasonable, but make sure the head is not noisy as rectifying problems is expensive.

Common fault: The BR2J heads have a couple of clutch shafts which if worn will make quite a racket, replacements parts from Hardinge (Current owners of Bridgeport) are in the region of £750, but pattern parts can be had for around £300-400.

Spindle bearings are in the region of £300-350 just for the parts.

As you can see what may appear to be a bargain machine could be anything but.

See here for a list of parts prices Bridgeport Parts give you some idea of what you are getting into.

If you are going to fit an inverter it should be able to give you variable speed you wont need the Variable belt drive of the Varispeed.

My 2HP 2J has an inverter I dont often use the Variable bit as it's easier to turn the knob to change speed.

And the Varispeed is more trouble with more expensive components to go wrong in it than the Step Belt head machines trust me I know.

A long drawn out and neccessarily complicated article, might that be better as a stand alone publication rather than eat up valuable Magazine space?

Are you looking to expand readership? as I can imagine it being rather off putting for a new reader picking up the Mag in Smiths and flicking through it only to find many pages of a complicated part article.

Andrew,

To me all sound of interest but in particular the Shaper article, without revealing too much what kind of repair?

I dont know anywhere local that stocks parrafin and the last time I did manage to buy some it was dearer than petrol.

I use WD40 on aluminium, use aerosols if you like but I find if bought by the gallon it dosent work out too salty price wise.

Thread: ER32 Ball Bearing Collet Nut back in stock @ Arceurotrade £6.80

My new (Collet) nuts arrived today, they are very nice indeed certainly better than some of the others I have which I paid a lot more than £6.80 for.

Thread: Vibrating bench drill
03/09/2013 15:47:10

Many moons ago I owned a cheapo 5 speed "NuTool" pillar drill, you still see clones of this machine for sale today (Machine Mart and Wickes) it too used to vibrate dreadfully.

Stripped the "Z" section belt off it and you could see a lump in it where the cheap Tiawanese belt had been joined, changed the belt for one from the local motor factors and vibration much improved.

It's other problem was the amount of play in the quill which as it wore got to around 1/8" side to side movement when fully extended, to cure this I stripped it down and slotted the casting so that after fitting a pinch bolt I could adjust the quill play to a reasonable level.

Here are some slightly better pics:

Grayson Banjo with Myford Gears & studs

Grayson Countershaft 5

The banjo is a similar shape to a Myford ML7, mine appears to be made from a solid chunk of brass and may not be original.

Here are some pics I picked off the web some time ago which show a different layout to mine:

Facebook, Twitter & Pinterest? is perhaps something for a "different" generation....

Very good point from Ziggar about fixing the site problems first, this must be one of the worst BB layouts I have seen why dont you take a leaf from HSM or PM and use some "proper" and user friendly BB software.

Thread: BOXFORD SCREWCUTTING GEARBOX
16/08/2013 21:21:07

All the Boxford A,B,C, AUD,BUD,CUD & TUD beds I have seen have the three pre drilled holes for the Boxford gearbox either Imperial or Metric.

Never seen one fitted with an "aftermarket" box.

You occasionally see genuine gearboxes on Fleabay for around £250 which is around what building a Myford compatible Machin/Hemingway gearbox may cost to construct let alone something bespoke.

A South Bend gearbox may also fit best place to ask that question though is the South Bend Yahoo group.

The old Boxford I have is imperial I dont cut many Metric threads on it but when needed it's not that much of a job to slip on the 100/127 compuond gear and whatever stud gear for the needed thread.
