Thread: What Did You Do Today (2017)

Another 'nothing' job. A variation on the studs I usually make to hang pictures and such, securely onto the wall.

Any views on the ones available from far east ie -**LINK**

The item referred to looked fine, but I would be Very apprehensive about ordering with that amount of negative feedback.

If you do take the plunge, do let us know the result.

Thread: R8 Drill Chuck + Screw?
27/01/2017 17:12:36
Posted by old Al on 27/01/2017 15:43:55:

Just remember its a DRILL chuck. Dont ever think you can take the lazy route and do a quicky milling job with the drill chuck holding a milling cutter

Does using a slot milling cutter count? I have to admit to using them for small counterbores, on occasions. Would agree that using the cutter's side faces is not to be recommended, with a drill chuck.

Rotabroach adapter 20mm

Just found an old picture I had taken last year. Fits a 20mm R8 collet.

Only problem I have found is that you have to be very diligent with clearing the chips away, unless on thin material. They work well.

Thread: bench drill clamping
12/01/2017 14:25:37

No reason why not. I'm just a bit curious as to why he would drill a gash hole in his neatly drilled and tapped table though.frown If the bed is fixed (like a bench drill) a lot of the holes would be superfluous, whereas on a milling machine they could be useful.

..... buying petrol in gallons? I suppose a man can dream...

That will never happen. Imagine the outcry if people actually twigged that they were paying £5.72 per gallon, 125.91p per litre is not quite so bad, (from last Nov when I filled up).

The scam with heating oil is just as bad. Advertised in great big letters at 45.87ppl (pence per litre) with a fantastic price of 44.86ppl with Group savings. Your price for 500L £235.52 i.e. 47.104ppl. They do have the good grace to put in small letters exc vat and inc vat. I'm sure petrol stations would advertise petrol at the 'basic' price if they thought they could get away with it.

Not sure how accurate the tracking is on those upright bandsaws, but I have one of the little Femi ones. It has no trouble cutting off a slice 0.5mm thick.

Perhaps his collets are the same as mine, only available in 3mm or 1/8", and larger of course. I just use carbide milling cutters for drilling,

Thread: Advice on DROs for a mill
31/12/2016 16:00:28

My first mill was a Warco VMC to which I had fitted a Mitutoyo 3 axis 0.001mm DRO system. It never gave an ounce of trouble, or even a gram, but it did cost more than the mill. You could say that I was a bit spoilt by that.

My new Warco WM40 mill is equipped as standard with only a Sino 2 axis 0.005 system, and it drives me mad. It was supposed to be upgraded to a 3 axis but that never happened, neither did the 0.001 scales.

The new DRO I have bought is an Easson with 0.001 scales. I have just completed a new mounting system for the readout unit as the old one was combined with the machine push-buttons. This also did not prove very easy to use, as the DRO never seemed to be in the right place. Warco are still advertising the WM40 with two separate units, viz DRO and push buttons, which would be a doddle to modify.

The only downside so far, with the Easson, is that I had to open up the case to change the voltage to 110v, but Machine DRO said it would not invalidate the guarantee.

For some small parts a quick burst of carb cleaner.. xylene is a brilliant solvent with it's own H&E arguments. It looks like you can buy 5L on ebay for not that much.. amazing that it can get delivered for that as a hazardous product. Less than £15 for 5L delivered makes it cheaper than meths???

Thanks for the tip. I'll have some at that price too.

That Bonneville looks very tidy, it's the same colours as the one I bought in 1968. Is it the bike's original number plate (Irish?) as I thought the silver mudguards were a US spec.

You don't mention the maroon one, is that a 3TA or 5TA?

Thread: what do you use when designing?
28/10/2016 10:15:49

Hi John

That's an interesting point you make, as you work in 3D. I had suspected that Chris was only working in 2D, as I do, creating his drawings in much the same way we were taught at school, but using that setup/layout on a computer.

I've used Tcad since v2, now using v18 (which is not the latest incarnation) and am still trying to find the new locations for menu items that the programmers deemed fit to move around from where they were in the previous version.

For most of my work, the drawings in 2D convert to DXF files for my CNC machine, and work well. There are advantages in 3D which would have been very useful for my current project - a table with the legs at a compound angle. It is an extremely steep slope to climb, to learn the 3D aspect though, so will make-do without it for the moment.

Being from the Engineering Drawing era, and a fellow user of TurboCad, have you tried using the blocks and symbols depending on the complication of what you are trying to draw? Using blocks seems to work in a very similar way to using separate files as described by John M above.

Spurry Could you not make new handles ( Wood or aluminium ) instead of throwing them away ?

I'm sure I would get more bonus points if I gave my wife her very own screwdrivers to open her paint tins. It would also save her trying to use my proper screwdrivers for the same job.

Of course I will have to buy some nice new ones...

Brian

The acidy smell I described earlier could be construed as vinegar I guess. Well that's a first for me, having to dispose of perfectly good screwdrivers because they are decomposing. My wife may like them to open her paint tins.

Thanks for the advice Vic. I did not really believe my eyes when I first saw this happening, and just thought my tools were upset at being removed from a warm workshop, to a cold one.

You are correct about the 'substance' attacking other drivers..it already has. The light blue plastic handle of one in the right hand corner was dissolved by this stuff. I just wish I understood the reason...
