Thread: Magnetic base LED machine light - WARNING MAY BE UNSAFE |
29/06/2016 21:47:21 |
Hi all, I did not keep the remains of this lamp but from memory the item marked R2 on Bandersnatches picture had flashed over to the switch and the end of the flexible neck. Whilst appreciating all being said about RCDs and breakers I speak from live experience not theory and the shock I received was not theoretical but real that is why I posted to warn others of the danger. i would like to add to this thread as i bought one of these lights in the original thread and was using it on my mill. Within less than 5 minutes of use the flexible neck touched the quill and with a blue flash I received a mains current shock before the RCD cut in, Without even looking inside I threw the thing in the scrap. I reported the fault to the supplier and received a reply saying this has never happened before, but the fact is it did and anyone wearing a pacemaker could have been in serious trouble so I say to those praising this lamp BEWARE |

Hi, David , I have this same mill and find the easiest way for me is to just tighten up the nut holding the adjustment handles providing you have no amount of backlash in the leadscrew this is all I ever need to do. Hope this helps. Regards Mike p

Hi, I have just modified the gibs on my lathe by fitting dowels to them this has eliminated all rock on the cross slide and the compound. it was a mod I had read about but having done it I recommend this mod to all. the other thing is to ensure that the gibs are thick enough to fill the space available. Hope this helps. Mike p |
Thread: Hand cleaner |

Hi all, Just to add to this thread I use green hard soap from Morrisons only available in their larger stores. I find this excellent for all workshop dirt and leaves the hands soft too. I have used this now for the past 4 years and all the different gel cleaners I have tried cant hold a candle to it including washing up liquid. Mike p |

Hi, If looking for the" green compound" for tapping just look for Trefolex a brand name and widely available. I have used this stuff for 40 odd years. Mike p |

Thread: Emma Victoria |

Hi Henry, My sincere apologies Having checked the drawing again together with the parts I have made the error is entirely mine I can only think that family pressures and shortage of workshop time led me to rush ahead instead of the old adage of measure twice, cut once. I would like to say that this is my first loco and I am enjoying the build immensely together with the narrative to accompany the drawings it is a pleasure to build. Again my apologies and I look forward to the next article every time. Happy steaming, Mike |

Hi John, Nice to hear I am not alone in this build. In answer to your query I have not yet made the boiler although I have made all the parts ready to silver solder. As I have urgent family matters to attend to I don't have much workshop time at present, however when I can I am machining all the boiler fittings in readiness, it was as I was trying the parts for the regulator made as per the drawing I found this problem so it looks as though I shall have to remake some of the pieces in order for the thing to function. I will wait now for hopefully a reply from Henry as to the way round the problem. As to the fire door bushes I don't have an answer to this as this will be my first locomotive build so it is a learning process for me. I have previously made boilers but these were gas fired so no fire door. Also thanks to Julian for raising the query for the "O" ring on the wet header. Perhaps if a boiler inspector reads this thread a suitable reply would help us all. Good luck to all building this engine Mike |

Hi Diane, I would like to ask if anyone building "Emma Victoria" has encountered problems with the dimensions on the boiler and in particular the regulator assembly as the sums do not add up. Taking all dimensions on the drawings the regulator end up at 11 5/8" as against the stated length of 11 1/8" this is not too bad, however on machining the bushes that form the threaded portion and the seat for the valve the valve won't seat within 9/16" perhaps Henry could check these measurements and comment or add an update to this forum. I would also like to hear replies from others that have had similar problems. Mike p

Hi All, Let me add Amadeal to the good list, Ifirst asked for a new circuit board and was told not to place the order until Eddie the technician had called me back to ensure that I had identified the problem correctly. Once this was confirmed at 4pm Wednesday and the order placed I expected maybe 2 days wait but no the part arrived at 10am today [Thursday] hows that for customer service. Mike p |

Hi stephen, I am building this loco and can only recommend as I have done and that is to find a local steel fabricator and get them to shear you some 4mm plate and then if you want it bright sand it to remove the scale. my apologies for the late reply but I have spent the last 4 weeks in hospital without internet access. Hi Bill, have you tried "Noggin End Metals" for your gunmetal, he has it in 1½" at quite reasonable prices. I found that a 10 thou cut cleaned it up well for silver soldering and you can bore the end plates to suit. Best Regards Mike p |

Hi Bill, I too am building "EMMA" but not keeping up with the articles just enjoying the work as this is my first locomotive. I have gone with the gunmetal cylinders and used brass pistons and am happy with the result. I have noticed that as yet there are no drawings for the cylinder cross slider although the latest drawings show the part that fixes to it. I also have no wheels as yet, I ordered them 8 weeks ago from Reeves but they have not yet arrived. Happy building Bill. Mike p |
