Wife renewed ME and MEW subscriptions a few weeks ago (and upgraded to include digital).

Your subscriptions expires in xxx days message continues on when I log in.

left it until message read 6 days left ...

Called subscriptions last week to check ... They claimed subscriptions already renewed and upgraded (credit card already debited btw). Can't do anything about website until it fails .

message now reads 1 day left. I hope it's a simple bug and rolls over tomorrow ... We shall see.

The Air is a brand new gift (Thks SWMBO). Not running anything other than native Safari (didn't know you could at ad-blocking!). Just reduced all security to a minimum on the settings. In the last 10-15 mins retried and ...

Up to ME 4472 works fine, fails with grey screen and waiting circle from 4473 onwards.

Up to MEW 211 works fine, fails with grey screen and waiting circle from 212 onwards.

Lets try this again ... sorry if this is a duplicate, the web site just through me out .

Access to the magazine archive has stopped working on my ipad air (it worked before) on both Safari and Dolphin browsers. Works ok on Firefox running on both Win7 and Ubuntu Linux 12, but needs a new website enabled for javascript execution called readertracking.com which seems to be a recent addition. Could there be any link?

Thanks Diane, this issue restores my faith in Model Engineer by actually including some Engineering (i.e. design relevant) articles. Looking forward to a boiler design article and (perhaps) other technical articles? I may never design a locomotive, ic engine or any other model engine, but as an engineer (sadly in the wrong discipline) it is great to see how they actually work under the skin. BTW don't diminish the 'how to' and construction articles - I have laid aside my soldering iron and started work on a (probably badly constructed!) Emma Victoria - learning an entirely new skill set.

So the discussion rumbles on, but with a twist regarding beginners and the Portable Engine. As a complete beginner myself (just completed a wobbler and working on trying to get parting off to work ...) Here is my opinion on this for what it is worth.

1. Thanks to the Author for spending the time and effort to write the thing in the first place, as a professional (not mechanical!) engineer I know the financial rewards for an article published in ME/MEW are no where near matching the time and effort required for this.

2. Thanks to David for starting the Portable Engine Thread which I have followed with interest.

3. Thanks to JasonB for his many inputs to that thread.

and now we come to my contribution ...

Combining all the above - my assessment was to leave this project well alone until

a. The design settles down (you know - never buy version 1.0 of anything!)

b. I have completed a few simpler projects ( A wobbler and a Stuart V10 (Thanks Cath!)) that are on the bench,

What I would REALLY like to see would be for JasonB or some other experienced ME to get together with the original Author and with David, Build one of these and then write up his experiences so that us beginners can see how you transform published plans (warts and all) into a working model. Integrate that with the beginners series running in MEW at the moment and you have the start of a really good MODERN resource/training program/co-authored book aimed straight at beginners (well me at least)!

I think I will stick with David's definitiion of 'fit for purpose' which I read as ...

Everything that the 'Artist' put on the original is on the copy (i.e. no edges cut off by the printers, readable etc...), what I do with it after I have bought it is my problem therefor cost stays reasonable - a term that, as a Scot, I will reserve judgment on!

Interpreting your statement

'fit for purpose' = I will get modern, error checked, maintained and updated to meet current professional engineering standards (and may STILL not be error free) therefor cost = 'as for commercial products' = $1000's+ (or in my industry $Millions+) I guess you pay your money and take your choice ..

Personally I would MUCH prefer ME, MEW and the Model engineering community etc stay around.

Let battle commence .

Hello Ray,

I have just had the same letter(s) - my digital subscriptions 'expired' over a year ago - since then access has been via my (print) subscription (both ME and MEW) which I KNOW I have renewed - you can't do direct debit etc between France and UK so it was done via 'phone.

So, does this mean that digital access is no longer part of the print subscription, or that MyHobbyStore subscription systems need a little TLC?

Just received 188 in the mailbox here, so here is my comments for what they are worth,..

Editors Bench Letter:

Just shows that everyone has a different opinion of 'Beginner'. I class myself as a 'Beginner' because I have never touched a lathe or milling maching before. I have spent 30 years as a professional engineer (Semiconductor, and now IT for my sins) + lots of car mechanics and DIY. Is that really a beginner? Who knows ... I think this is part of the 'Help the beginners' problem.

Personally I am really enjoying and profiting from the beginners series currently running in MEW, and (BTW) I have completed a toolmakers clamp - and the cylindrical square (from Harolds Lathe Book), now working my way through making the various clamps from the Milling Machine book!

Costs = 000's pounds to equip the workshop (50th Birthday present from my wife), Monetary value = ~5 pounds so far, Pleasure in completing them = Priceless! My cylindrical clamp sat on top of the telly for a while to be admired (by me) Cath (my wife) and kids just looked somewhat bemused!

Keep up the good work David et al.

Harold Hall letter

I agree with Harold - I think that understanding the reasons and (to some extent) the theory makes solving the problems that much easier. In this way I will hopefully learn enough to be able to build from plans (or even design stuff myself) rather than following detailed instructions and building from kits.

I must admit I am a bit of a fan of Harold...

Anyway enough for now, need to go back to work .

I would also recommend GLR (See advert in MEW). Pete gives great service, although my last shipment arrived with some 'interesting' protective packing around some copper tube comprising a bunch of (clean) boxer shorts!.
