Thread: Model Engineer Microsoft latest App Update!!!!!!!!!
11/07/2018 02:08:06

On top of this I decided as I am permitted to view the forums own digital archive I'd do a little online stuff through the forum. angry 2angry. Although the individual access to both ME & MEW is there lick on a magazine and I get an error not able to view any of them.

I know young Kate Hall is on the case but this is way out of her depth and time matters were taken seriously by the powers higher up.

No wonder as Russell said people are pirating at far less if not free all round the world yet we suffer this sort of theft by the magazine itself and its associates. It is no a total waste of $$$$$$, time and causing great frustration.

I pity all those who write articles and the promoters in the end it will be there loss as people walk away from pure incompetence and mismanagement. Great example of running a business and engineering at its worst.

WOW almost 100F 40C in the UK you guys must feel like a Pork Roast on Sunday.

At the moment its winter in QLD cold 1C to 14C most mornings by 10am its a mild 23C most days. Summer well ok at similar to the temps your having atm I open all 3 garage doors till such time no breeze is is flowing through then I go sit in the shade on patio.

Drink plenty water unless finished for the day then an ale or 3.

Thread: Model Engineer Microsoft latest App Update!!!!!!!!!
01/07/2018 00:49:54

angryangryangry After coming onto the PC to send an email to hose concerned and post his I went back to the tablet to continue and having already used the Pocketmags app and had downloaded the latest issue earlier on the tablet decided to use it to read. Opened that app up to be confronted again with an update for that particular seperate app. I declined this time and gained access. IF I had accepted I not only would have lost all ME but also years of downloaded issues access to MEW.

This is not the first time we have been put through this and it needs to change!!!!!!!!

Thread: Rivet Identification

To me these look like 2 riverts which have been used before which didn't go in and have forced but didn't go in either misaligned plates. One seems to be off to one side wear while the other rippled along the taper section. They could possibly be also done during manufacture and normally discarded.

Thread: Model Engineer Microsoft latest App Update!!!!!!!!!
30/06/2018 23:53:26

I had downloaded the latest ME issue yesterday via Pocketmags app on my PC.

As normal Sunday morning is use tablet and download via Microsoft app I instantly got a pop up box announcing that I'd need to download the latest app update to view ME. So I did teethteethteethangryangry they have done it again NO access to previously downloaded issues !!!!!!!!!!!!

So before you download it think carefully
1 if you have the patience to re-download every issue you have in the past

2 have the ISP limit set to be able to do so

3 can afford the time out of the shed or away from family etc to do so.

In this day and age of digital downloads this proves once again these magazines need to be in PDF where we have control over what we pay highly for.Maybe its time the sponsor were notified of how much this is a total waste of OUR $$$$$$$.

Thread: No Access
11/06/2018 10:57:12

Dave thats very interesting BUT I do not use a router.

What you are saying is that Pocketmags and the other two App's can not work unless a router is used??
As they all are supposed to be able to access your archive should you be off line which does not need a router but only uses your stored download and machine resources.

Well 24hrs latter all good thanks gents.

Just so damn frustrating two machine 3 App's on tablet and one on PC none of which would show sings of life even after re-starting up to 4 times.

Ruined my Sunday morning ritual of breakfast in the QLD sun reading Fav mags online, so after morning tea headed into shed for the remained of the day.

Have a good week all.

10/06/2018 01:29:46

I've spent since 7am trying to access ME & MEW through all 3 App's on both PC & Tablet with no luck. Can't  download latest issues all i get is white space no buttons work etc.

I cannot even access the library's stored on either machine??

This is similar to our woes when Pocketmags removed without warning digital app access last time, !!

I can access forum archive tho.

Anyone else suffering similar woes?.

Thread: MEW 268 - THREAD Dial Indicator article
14/05/2018 07:29:07

Honestly wish I was using he lathe far more than I am right now. Other work which is making me some $$$ keeping me busy so I can afford more metal working gear

14/05/2018 07:26:23

Hopper I double checked and yes it does have fibre washers. Loose due to not tightening lock nut enough.
So looks like fibre washers also don't hold well.

13/05/2018 22:55:10

Has anyone ever engaged the TDI first then the half nut??

13/05/2018 22:53:56

Ah Hopper so why is it stated in a way that fibre washers are only used IF required seems to mean No washer at all might work??

Mine doesn't have a fibre washer but a shim and a spring washer on the nut side. I can not see what good a fibre washer would be on the nut side. Of late the retainer tension nut is not holding it tight enough to maintain connection with the leadscrew, that is going to cause trouble.

In practice as Jason said fibre washers crush and over time will wear to point of disintegration by constant movement.
The slightest wear on the half nut or backlash will make alignment an issue between the leadscrew and the spur gear of the TDI.

Even the paragraph title misleads.
"What is a Dial Indicator" A dial indicator is a device which ??

below borrowed from http://www.americanmachinetools.com/how_to_use_a_lathe-2.htm

13/05/2018 08:48:09

Hopper couldn't this be achieved by simply turning the leadscrew until it lined up with the half nuts disengaged?

By the way thanks for your background on it I'd seriously not read this anywhere before.

I can understand if the TDI was being set up at a particular point say closest to the head stock or visa versa.

I'll say thanks I've had to write up Ambulance User Manuals and Service Data Manuals. Almost as bad as a Club Bulletin with the same.

12/05/2018 14:33:18

Neil I know that during my time writing tech manuals and tour brochures seeing them over and over again.

XD351. I considered that BUT over the last few months we have been through much regarding a lot to do with so much regarding both magazines. Web downloads, access, postal issues this is not good and those who may not see the flaws in this article and are new could be turned off just as I was many many years ago as a very young lad.

Trevor has used the title "Using a Thread Dial Indicator"! yet has left out so much in his descriptive working of and jumped to checking of the Thread dial Indicator. Leaving out the half nut interaction with the hand wheel to move the carriage/saddle. He states about doing it from "a first principles" and wanting I gather to make it easier for those as confused as he was when he started out. I still am a novice but as stated have much background and training.

He mentions installing the TDI and lining it up to mesh with the lead screw?? I can not see how fiber washers would in anyway make lining it up on installation to mesh with the lead screw?? There is no mention of ever moving the dial indicator in or out to engage it or disengage it only about the half nut.

There is No photo showing TDI meshing with the leadscrew just the top of the TDI's.

The sentence & paragraph I had to read 4 times "With the half-nuts engaged the carriage, with the indicator, moves with the threads on the leadscrew and the indicator doesn't rotate"

The statement previous to that gives the indication he has the TDI engaged or meshed!

2nd sentence " But when the half-nuts are disengaged the indicator dial rotates as the carriage moves along the bed"!! That is impossible, if the half-nuts are disengaged the saddle will not move and hence the TDI will not either. Un;ess you leave the TDI meshed with the leadscrew and use the hand wheel to move the carriage, yet no explanation in doing so.

From there on further statements are made regarding the correct use of the TDI but with no explanation only use of the half-nut and its use. Although he does say "leaving them engaged".???

In checking the travel distance there is no mention of using the hand wheel to move the carriage/saddle don't forget he's trying to describe to novices those who are looking for guidance.

From there as Neil spotted poor layout/continuity of the article.
I struggled to continue to read through but did from there on. I was hoping to find something about using the TDI itself not mathematical formula nothing to do with the TDI itself.

Thread: Plastic Ban
12/05/2018 07:53:06

I wonder if the Australian Government will force Australia Post to cease using the heavy duty plastic bags for parcels.??

The hospitals for using special coloured liners for waste?

If Government depts will cease using all the plastic folders etc??

With the likes of 3d printers will they become a waste problem from many peoples disgarded mistakes?

Thanks Jason.

12/05/2018 00:27:17

Just downloaded the above MEW No 268 and reading the dial indicator article.

Trevor sorry but so much is wrong in this . I am a novice but have much background. I hope many who read can assess the wrongly described situations. You mentioned Martin Cleeve's work and getting your head around it! Even my dyslexia usually only typing or writing found me re-reading one sentence 4 times on the dial engagment or disengagement??

I myself have to destress re-read often before posting even on our own blog, then I read it again.

Obviuosly editing just didn't happen here.

Thread: Jig Borer
09/05/2018 06:46:11

Michael the Sigma Jones rotary table is numbered different to the rest I've seen and appears to be factory milled.

Now my machine s Bob has decided he has no use for it so i am buying it off him. Minus the tilting table which appears home made but to standards very high.
We found motor doesn't arch up so bob is checking that out and the notchy bearings on main shaft. Hope there is no serious damage to the shaft, bearings can be replaced.

I'd like to do a restore on it, going to need to locate the sizes of the original drive belt pulleys and the tension bracket which I will have to get one cast up. I bout I'd ever find one.

Thread: ME production problems, delivery problems or Canada post?
