Thread: What happened to the conclusion of CNC 4th Axis?
05/08/2011 20:58:59
<anybody could in theory get their article published>
Wouldn't want to stop that.

Is it me or is the standard of writing better in the ME?

OK, drop the words 'peer' and 'scientific'.

Often an author cannot see his errors as he is too close to his work. Just because I can turn a piece of metal down to 5mm doesn't mean that I can write about it. But, if I do and if revieiwed then the comment 'did you really mean 50mm and not 5.0mm?' can save the day.

Likewise in the current MEW issue, did the author really mean to connect live and neutral to the same terminal? We all know the answer I suspect.

<Should we be adopting a similar system to scientific publication in that articles are peer reviewed prior to publication?>
I have thought this for a while now and the current mew 180 contains a couple of examples where this would have helped. But ...

money is involved. Who will review articles for nothing? I can't see the publishers wanting to spend more money.

A shame really.

Thread: Nemmet which mag' Issues?
03/08/2011 15:06:27
<Maybe if you spelt it correctly you would get better results rather than blame the search engine>
Actually I agree with John and I can't spell either and I also often mistype. You usually get a clue when the search engine says something like 'did you mean Nimitz?'

I have given up with Google as too often I was opening a web page it had found and the web page says 'noting found'. Obviously Google were just selling advertising space irrespective of whether there was anything relevant to buy.

Apologies, I should have said I was talking in general terms and not DRO specific. I am still saving up for my DRO <s>.

Why hold the handle 5 deg below the centreline? Is this because when you lift the handle up the points will read the smallest diameter and stay there?

Thread: GETTING CNC WORKING

Philip, I live in Lincs (near Sleaford) and have a couple of oscilloscopes (5 I think).

I am quite happy to come to you and see what is coming out of your PC (if anything) etc.

<into Chinglish but they are almost incomprehensible>
This annoys me too. Why a British reseller thinks it is OK to put THEIR name on a product and then give you a rubbish manual is beyond belief to me.

If I have just bought something for £5 direct from China then I can accept it but not when I have just stumped up over £100 (say) for an item.

Perhaps the image of their company is so poor in their mind that they don't care.

Thread: Machine Manuals

<Out of interest the Grizzly manual>
Thanks for that tip Ray, I have downloaded Grizzly equivalent manuals for both my Warco lathe and mill.

Sadly they don't have anything for Warco (or dare I say it, Myford)

I've spoken over the phone and on visits with a couple of people at Warco and they knew their stuff. Sad then that they don't write their own manuals, it only has to be done once for each machine. Think of the kudos they would achieve. I used to occasionally produce technical documents for my company (I am now retired) and I would rather have died than send out what Warco do, come to that I think my boss would have personally killed me if I had!!

Still, a good idea of James though, at times any manual is better than no manual.

<When I had a problem with my BH600 I needed to know how the saddle was put together. I downloaded a manual that was better than that supplied. As its a current model I wonder how they get/got round the copyright problem>

Is your BH600 manual copyrighted? I have two Warco machines, lathe and mill but not a 600, but neither manual is copyrighted. I would add here that it would be a damn cheek to copyright either as they are both rubbish manuals.

I agree that a manual section would be useful and further up the profile of this website.

Thread: Prams and teddies again
04/06/2011 09:57:10
<but that would mean less time in the workshop !>
Depends where your workshop is. I have two, one in my garage and one in my kitchen.

Last winter I got fed-up not being able to get out into my No1 workshop as it was so cold (it looks like global warming means the UK will get colder) that I decided to put a lathe in my kitchen. Now I never go out much and certainly not out of my back door and that is 36" wide, just enough room for a small lathe. So I bought a Myford SP10. Fits perfectly and I can now machine in the warm all year round. But ...

Myfords are a bit like old British motorbikes, interesting to look at but a pain in the butt to use.

Thread: This months MEW are 3 CNC features two too many
13/05/2011 20:47:37
As the editor has said before he can only publish what he is given. So come on you moaners write something that you do so that the rest of us can enjoy also.

You never know you might find it more enjoyable than moaning.

PS I generally don't read the CNC articles either but I know that in the future I will get my hands on a CNC machine and when I do I know were to go (other than the manual) for something informative to read.
Thread: Cheap linear scale display
02/05/2011 20:24:49
John Olsen's quote is how I feel at times.

Having another look at Newall's website

They actually do some scales that are 'PC compatible.' In fact compatible with most displays.

All I need now is a SH scale that I can play around with.

Thanks for the input guys.

I don't have any scales at the moment. I am building a motorbike that is a mixture of UNF and Metric fittings. Switching between the two isn't too difficult on my imperial lathe and mill as I usually use a metric/inch vernier caliper (or rule) to measure things.

As you stand there machining your mind wanders and you think 'wouldn't it be nice if ...' in my case switchable readout. I had a look in MEW and thought a pair of Newall scales would be nice but can I get anything cheaper...?

While looking at glass scales on the net the thought occurred to me re RS232 and D type connectors.

<A bit of a wander around google will find the info>
If only Ian ....!!!!!!! I've wandered around so much it feels like I am back in the Colossal Cave (running on an ICL1906S.)

Well JasonB hit the nail on the head. I have been searching the web and found very little hence my question, 'has anybody done it.'

I'll keep noodling as the thought of spending £200 on a display unit when I already have redundant but serviceable laptops and desktops waiting to be put to use bugs me.

I have downloaded some software for an old Shumatech unit which I am in the process of disassembling to see what I can glean. Don't hold your breath though this is really a winter job!

Thanks for the input.

The large linear scales look as though they have an RS232 connector on the end of their cable. Has anyone connected one to a laptop/desktop and used that as a display?

Thread: Another MEW index 1-170
13/11/2010 21:47:42
Yes, the index is just for my benefit really so author wasn't important but I have added the detail where known. One knock-on of this is that I haven't added any authorship of scribe a line letters.
