Thread: What Did you do Today 2022

Derek

only just seen your post about your leaking roof, commiserations I also have a leaky workshop roof, mine is where I joined two adjacent sheds together and created a box gutter between the two to carry away the rain from one of the sheds. Was felted with torch on felt about 12 years ago and has finally given up and the OSB board used for the base of the box is now thoroughly soaked and dripping, running the dehumidifier 24/7 to try and reduce the moisture content but appear to be losing that battle. Repair scheme is to cut away the felt lining the box gutter, remove and replace with new the OSB board and I am contemplating fibreglassing the complete box in one go, not fibreglassed a roof before but there are plenty of vids on how to do it on YouTube, only problem is I need at least one if not two very dry days which are find to find in the depths of winter. These problems always happen when it’s inconvenient to effect repairs. Had contemplated the EDPM rubber method but reservations about its integrity with the local feline population using the workdhop roof for recreation purposes. Dave W

In Russia where very low temps are the norm during winter, cars used to dump there coolant when stopping for an extended period and then refill with hot water when you wanted to be mobile again, at very low temps normal antifreeze didn’t work so vehicles just used water when running. Dave W

My granddaughter works for British Airways and flew out to Orlando last night, working of course, apparently not even Florida will escape the big freeze, they have been warned to expect very heavy frosts there, so those who thought they would escape the dreary British weather for some sunshine will sadly be disappointed. Granddaughter scheduled to bring an aircraft back from Orlando on the 27 th that is if everything is back on schedule by then. Dave W

I realise that the facility for blocking all but your favourites list is possible but my wife is not in the best of health so some calls are from medical facilities that are number withheld so not a way forward for me. Dave W

I have had problems going back months, I get calls from numbers that start 0483 the rest of the number changes every time it calls, the call only rings about three rings then disconnects, if you ring the numbers they don’t connect. I used to get uptight about it but now I just let my phone ring for a while before answering, if it is the 0483 numbers then it disconnects itself if not answered immediately. I carry my IPhone in my pocket but with my new hearing aids I can answer the phone by using my hearing aids and I don’t need to handle the phone so I don’t always see the number calling. I cannot see any purpose to just calling a phone then disconnecting after three or four rings and changing the number every time, who is it and what is the purpose of the exercise, as mentioned above more than likely has its origins in China. My solar system on my roof generates only 4kwh in ideal conditions, I have 12Kwh of battery storage and one sunny day I used the technology built into the batteries inverter to read how much juice was going into the batteries and was amazed when it read 20 amps, on a sunny summers day my system generates a total of 25 kWh so with the batteries, for about 3 months during high summer, we can be self sufficient. Having a tariff that gives us cheaper energy during off peak times, midnight to seven am, during winter, when the sun rarely shines, I charge my batteries at less than half the cost of day rate units to use during the daytime, with the current energy crisis due to the war in Europe I am glad I took the step in installing the solar system, I think it is certainly the way forward for households of the future. At this time when there is a power outage my system isolates itself in order not to feed back into the grid and therefore prevent accidents when the grid is being worked on, I can modify my batteries inverter to make the stored power in the batteries available during a power outage but as we have very few outages at the moment the cost is not justified. Can I say that I am very impressed with your system. Dave W

Referring to Martins post about the allocation of duties where ward assistants feed the patients it has always intrigued me why the food for patients is served by those whose responsibility it is to clean the ward toilets ! ! ! Dave W

Air bags are eminently suitable for lifting quite heavy items, when I was in the Air Force we used them for lifting large heavy aircraft, they operate on very little Pounds per square inch. Dave W

I posted earlier on this thread about if my cat needed treatment from our vet as to the stark difference if the NHS was involved. Unfortunately I had to take my cat to the vet this morning, vet took blood samples and the results were available this afternoon, there was an anomaly with his liver results, he is booked in for 8.30 tomorrow morning for an anaesthetic and ultrasound of his liver; how can the NHS ever become that responsive, there is a very long way for the NHS to go. Hoping that the results of my cats ultrasound are good news but a sense of foreboding tells me that it won’t be, still if he needs surgery I know he will have it as soon as is practicable, probably no longer than a couple of days. Talking of cold feet when driving, many years ago I was the proud owner of a VW Beetle, the air cooled variety, the heating system on it was hot air ducted from heat exchangers on the exhaust system. In the footwell next to your feet was a sliding grille that controlled the admission of heated air, it was possible to open the grille fully and literally roast your feet in that car, never had a heating system that came up to the standard set by that car. I loved my beetle, it was a simple vehicle and very reliable. Dave W

Fill with oil so that the level is visible in the sight glass, ideally so the level is halfway up the sight glass, it does make it easier to see. Dave W

A bit off topic but back in the 70’s a colleague of mine owned a moskvitch car and it was built to cope with the worst that a Russian winter could throw at it. Under the bonnet on the side of the engine block was a hand wheel which when turned opened a valve in the engine cooling system and dumped the entire contents of the cooling system, this was because when the weather was 30 - 40 degrees below zero antifreeze wouldn’t protect the engine from freezing so every time the engine was shut down for any period such as overnight the coolant was dumped and fresh hot water was added to the engine before starting. A very simple, practical and inexpensive method of frost protection. Dave W

I have a Warco BV20 lathe which has a geared headstock, it has a sight glass same as yours, this is to indicate the oil level in the gearbox. If you want to do an oil change, or top up the gearbox then it requires removal of the top cover of the gearbox and to empty you need a syringe with plastic tubing attached. Dave W

When I did an aircraft course, many years ago now, I remember during the cabin conditioning and pressurisation phase of the course being told that a fluid (for that read air) will more readily give up heat the hotter it is, in the system on the particular aircraft that we were training on the cold air unit in the air system actually heated the cabin air before cooling it as this was actually more efficient at achieving a cooler temperature, bearing in mind that all the cabin pressurised air was taken from the compressor stage of the engines so was starting out 450 degrees C. It didn’t make sense to me then and still doesn’t. Dave W

Similar experience early this year, had a large red painful area on my leg near to my ankle which was quite sore. Rang our local surgery, phone lines open at 08.30, engaged of course so kept ringing continuously till finally got through at 09.15 only to be told all appointments had gone, receptionist enquired what was the problem, I said that I suspected a blood clot in my leg, receptionist said hang on while I speak to the manager, came back on the line and said Doctor will phone me. Not long after the Doctor phoned and we discussed the issue and she said I need to see you come to the surgery at 11.00. I reported to the surgery and she examined and said that the problem was not a blood clot but she didn’t know what the problem was but suspected some ligament problems so she organised an x-ray and a referral for physio therapy. X-ray took 2 months to come through and the physio appointment took 6 months. Physio has decided to refer me to a Podiatrist for orthotics for a lifetime problem with my feet that is now giving problems, how long it will take for the referral to the Podiatrist is anybodys guess, a few months I expect. It’s no joke growing old as your body starts giving problems and the NHS is in crisis because of huge problems of mismanagement due to its use as a political tool.

I remember back to 1972 when my second daughter was taken ill whilst we were on holiday in Dorset it transpired that she had bacterial meningitis at the age of 21 months, it was the worst form of meningitis and after admission to hospital she was unconscious for 4 days and the prognosis was that she wasn’t expected to live but if she survived then she would undoubtedly be severely handicapped. She did survive and the only handicap that she suffered was epilepsy which fortunately by her teens she had outgrown. I am eternally grateful to the doctors and nurses at her hospital for the dedication and hard work that meant that she survived.

My daughter is currently employed by the Home Office and her department looks after unaccompanied refugee children that arrive on our shores, no shortage of those so kept very busy. In respect of her treatment that she received as a child I couldn’t fault the NHS, she spent a month in hospital recovering from the meningitis and was then transferred to a hospital near our home. I believed then in 1972 and still believe now that if you need an emergency admission to hospital there is no finer health service in the world, the problems that currently afflict our health service are all related to mismanagement and inappropriate funding, the medical profession does itself no favours because of outdated attitudes of a number of consultants who would not be out of place in a feudal system in the Middle Ages with their pompous attitudes of how important they perceive themselves to be, fortunately their numbers are decreasing with time as they die off.

My granddaughter is a senior sister in our local hospital, she is always complaining about the problems facing the NHS, one wonders how bad it has to get before radical changes are put in place. In contrast to the NHS if I take my cat to our vet with a problem and a blood test is required then the results are available within two hours, blood test through our doctors surgery take a week for results to be available, I realise that with the vet I pay for the service but even in the NHS everything is costed and allocated to budgets so no real difference.

OK so rant over now. Dave W

A lot to be said for the old fashioned apprenticeships that people took many years ago, it gave a thorough grounding in most aspects of the trades. I was loosely involved in training apprentices back in the 90’s, the company sent the youngsters of to college for a few months and when they returned to the company full time they were sent to the machine shop and had to fend for themselves, most were totally out of their depth and it’s no wonder that mistakes happen, I know we learn by our mistakes but we should at least be supervised when making those mistakes to minimise consequences. Thread: Flooded gas pipes
09/12/2022 17:02:58

A couple of years ago houses in our close were experiencing supply problems with the gas, a crew turned up and connected with the gas main through an access point in the pavement and proceeded to pump out water that had accumulated in the gas main, apparently there are access points in gas mains at strategic points purely for the purpose of pumping out accumulated water, this is different and unconnected to the emergency problems that are occurring currently in Yorkshire. Our Close has since had the gas mains sleeved internally with plastic so not sure if water accumulation will occur again. Dave W
