Thread: Coronavirus

Just an insight into how helpful government departments are during this crisis, my daughters husband and our 21 year old grandson are in Mexico, having been there on holiday. They travelled using independent flights via United Airlines, unfortunately not a package holiday, the airline have cancelled their return flights with no alternatives offered, they are now effectively stranded in Mexico with no prospects of a flight home. Daughter decided to contact the Foreign and Commonwealth office to see if there was any way they could help; she phoned last night and was kept on the line in a queue for a considerable period of time and finally managed to speak with someone and they said there was nothing that could be done to help. She checked her phone to see how much the call had cost and was amazed to find that she was charged £57.00 . I think it’s outrageous that government departments charge helplines at premium rates, I was under the impression that they had been shamed into abolishing premium rates for helplines but obviously not. We all have to pull together in this crisis, my daughter has distributed leaflets in our village volunteering to do shopping, walk dogs collect prescriptions for those who are required to isolate themselves, a bit of a kick in the teeth from the government who encourage her to be public spirited to then charge an obscene amount for seeking advice.

Not wishing to be gloomy but the emergence of “herd immunity” now being used by the government in its updates, conveys to me that perhaps their strategy is that as many of the population as possible should endure the virus in order that they will be immune when successive waves of the virus strikes, then meaning that there will be a larger number of citizens then able to carry on working with less disruption and of course pay the taxes that the government will desperately need. I am sure that it can’t be as cynical as that.
On a lighter note went clay pigeon shooting this morning, when I walked into the clubhouse a shooting colleague of mine, we are both in our early seventies, jokingly said that he needed me to keep at least two metres away from him at all times; my reply was that the government had advised that the really elderly should all stay at home so what was he doing in the clubhouse, touché.

Steviegtr, I see you use titanium in your rings, do you take any special precautions when machining it as it can have the tendency to self ignite under certain conditions, I have some titanium bar and I am reluctant to machine it without knowing if special measures need to be observed ?

I am chair of a Village Hall management committee and where organisations have to cancel their bookings we adopt a policy of not charging the hire fees if there are circumstances such as snow, illness, circumstances such as the Coronavirus situation or other unavoidable happenings. One would hope that your venue would adopt a similarly sympathetic approach.

Martin you have made it all appear chillingly real.

Being rather cynical in my point of view, knocking out all the elderly population of a country could ultimately be a significant financial gain to their economy so probably not the way to attack an opponent, just an observation. I am not averse to thinking the worst of various countries, those who play dirty have an advantage.

Was under the impression that those returning from Italy are obliged to self isolate, it appears that flight crews travelling to and from Italy do not have to, is this a glaring loophole in the governments master plan to protect us from the Coronavirus!

You can rely on the British at the first hint of a crisis to panic buy, why is it always toilet paper and sugar that are first on the list, no matter what the crisis is ?
Dave W

Toilet paper is apparently in short supply as everyone panics, I hear that soaps are also on the shortages list , is this because an element of the population who rarely if ever used it are now going to be washing their hands ?

It seems as though the world is getting paranoid about Coronavirus, so far the mortality is estimated at less than normal flu, each year hundreds die from influenza in this country and we don’t get this worked up about it. I recently had flu with complications and spent four days in hospital, it made me realise that influenza complications can be serious, but we just take it in our stride. I am not advocating that we don’t treat Coronavirus as serious but we need to put it in perspective, if we take all the precautions that we can, if we get it then 99% of us should survive.

I wouldn’t use powder coating, my experience is that it goes brittle and then flakes off, a waste of money. When I was working in industry we had pump assemblies painted to resist very harsh environments and the paints were phenomenal, as far as I can remember they were two part epoxies and applied in thick layers. I would source an epoxy finish for durability.

I perceive that regulation of kiln dried logs will be overseen by Trading Standards, they seem the logical persons to police sales, with the current level of under provision of manpower in local authority departments I bet that it will be a very low priority and very few transgressors will be held to account.

Thread: Horn plates bowed when adding rivets
28/02/2020 19:26:48

I would think that hammering the rivets in a line across the plate with the plate being weakened by the rivet holes has allowed the plate to bend slightly, all the hammer blows would be on the same side of the plate. My suggestion is to apply suitable pressure to the plate to bring it back to straight using some form of press. An 1/8 of an inch isn’t very much but I realise it is annoying that it didn’t remain flat.

Just like to throw into the mix the magnetic North Pole is moving at an alarming rate because, supposedly the balance of the earth has been altered by the extraction of huge volumes of water in the Indian region and so much concrete has been erected in China, I fear we are all doomed !

Thread: I'm making D reamers on a ML8 please help me get a proper lathe!

Sam thanks for that info, good to hear of a CS working for its living and doing what it was designed for, dreamt of going off grid, have solar and limited battery capacity but senior management vetoed the idea of a generator being included in the mix, working on the idea of a wind generator, we live in a coastal area so plenty of wind. Objective of totally off grid is probably unrealistic but was seemed a good idea, anyway we are certainly saving money with our solar setup.
