Thread: Book on lathe operation ?
20/06/2022 09:52:21

A member here gave me a copy of "The amateurs lathe by Sparey" (forgive me I can't remember the members name).

It has been a great help even if it is a little dated most of the information still applies.

I have also picked up some very useful information on U tube but you need to know which are are the ones that give the correct information.

I know that you have now got it off but I use the same method as Sandy put the largest allen key that will fit and tighten it up and then give it a good tap to release that is assuming that you can tighten the chuck .

Hi Derek, like all your bowls etc, and your collet chuck backplate looks very neat too.

Regards Nick.

Thank you Nick just been looking at your camera bracket and trying to work out what the screw is in the first photo is for as it does not come through the cork or seem to hold anything

Looks like top-class work - very nice pieces.

Thank you Mick, I can now buy some more tools for either of the hobbies, nothing like making money from something I enjoy doing

Brought a collet chuck for the lathe so set to today after straining the brain doing some trigonometry and also with some help here by making a back plate for it well everything turned out right despite getting the DRO set up wrong to start with

Thank you guys I have done a test drill in a piece of 1/8" steel and the first two attempts went totally wrong not through calculations but trying the circle function on the DRO so cracked that part of it.

I first tried 74.7mm which I had worked out and it was slightly off so went for the 75mm and it came out perfect.

All the information given was certainly very helpful.

I have now written this in the booklet that came with the lathe for further reference

Why not use the cross slide micrometer dial? Put a point in the tool holder at centre height, align it to a centre in the h/s taper, then wind it out until it is aligned with the centre of a hole. Read off the PC radius from the dial (or PCD depending on how its calibrated). the BS eyeball is surprisingly accurate at judging relative position.

A good idea but it did help blow the cobwebs off of my trigonometry whether it was accurate is another thingdevil

Will the Photos and description be published as it may put some members off as they may not want them put into public domain as in the magazines

Posted by Michael Gilligan on 15/06/2022 08:39:50:

My guess is that the nominal PCD might be 75mm

… if you share your raw measurements, everyone can have a go at working from those

MichaelG.

The outside measurement of bolt to bolt is 72.8mm and the studs range from 7.4mm to 7.8mm so there is a little flexibility in measureing as they are classed as 8mm. These measurements are from the 4 jaw chuck for the machine. I have measure at least three time to come up with these

I have a spare piece of material that I could do a test drill on

15/06/2022 08:33:07

I have spent last evening trying to work out the PCD of the holes on my WM280v lathe. I have done a search with no luck unless I missed it.

I have measured the stud distance on the chuck backplate I have. and by working with that I seem to have worked out that the PCD is 74.70mm

I just need someone who may already know the correct measurement to confirm whether that is correct

It has been a very long time since I have done any trigonometry

More a case of what I did the weekend. A military show that myself and the wife attended with her knitting and my woodturning this is my other hobby and by doing things like this help give me a little extra to buy tools and the like for both the woodturning and some of my metal work.

I did however manage to pick up some gun bluing gel which I will try and a couple of gun brushes which I can use

The only problem is I do like to get into the workshop and work on the Rob Roy but can't have it both ways

Sorry to hear of your medical problems just keep fighting and whatever you do do not loose your sense of humour.

Is there no way of adapting the workshop so you could at least make small things to keep your hand in. Sorry just thinking out aloud.

I am sure that whatever you contribute to the forum will be well recieved

Hi Derek,

This is just a move from one server to another. No changes in functionality have been made, but we are looking at what might be improved in the future.

I'm changing the thread title to make it explicitly for raising any issues with the site functionality, as Darren suggested.

Neil

But is the spell checker not a function of the web site, so in your words "no change to functionality" so therefore there are no issues with functionality as with you second sentence

10/06/2022 10:18:44

In the change over have you included the ability to load PDF files or fixed the spell checker

I use a cheaper version of one of THESE when I have made handles for my home made woodturning tools and then just deburr the inside

Thread: Help: Cordless angle grinder keeps shutting down?

When you switch on and push the switch to the on position try holding it there with a little pressure if the machine then continues to run then a faulty switch probabily dirty

Not sure what happened but it seems that a whole thread has disappeared. Also the spell checker is still not working

Thread: Vickers Bl 8 inch Howitzer cannon of 1917
06/06/2022 10:48:37

Even though I may not post replies but I for one have been following the progress on this build and am amazed at the craftmanship involved. I can only imagine how how the threading was done on this and the time involved in producing it.

Many thanks for the updates as the work progresses

Thread: Back plate

I would be inclined to buy a backplate from Warco ready to go. You then just have to machine it to fit your collet chuck. Did the same for my WM250 some time ago. Details here *** Fitting Collet Chuck ***

John

I looked there and as always they seem to be out of stock

03/06/2022 20:53:31

That was the only solution that I could see. I agree the parting blade in a small way and then spend a week plus hacksawing it. I keep looking at getting a power hacksaw but other things seem more important to buy for my set up and things like this will only come along very rarely, I will not say never come along again as that is tempting fatedevil

Not 100% conclusive but Parker Steel have Ali which they mark with red paint as AW-6082 EN,  AW-AlSilMgMn,  HE30, If any of that makes sense. And as they are just down the road it may have come from them
