Thread: emco pc turn 55 conversion to mach3
25/03/2019 10:17:00

I run Mach 3 on 2 milling machines and a Denford Easiturn lathe. They all work fine for what I do but I am still thinking of going to the dark side (linux) and have bought a Denford Orac as a test bed machine. If I get on with it I will probably switch over on everything.

The main reason is threading. While the easiturn is big enough to manage this on short threads it loses sync over 40mm or so. This is going to be much more of a problem on a smaller lathe like the PC Turn.

I have always meant to try linux but have never got round to it so now hopefully I soon will.

Thread: Steel identification
17/03/2019 15:20:05

Hi,

I had to order a length of 16mm diameter EN24T from a supplier in Birmingham because it was out of stock at my usual suppliers. When I turned up the chap started rummaging around on a rack saying this might be it, he promptly went off to the office and came back with a small handheld gun which he pointed at said steel. A small LCD display clearly labeled it as EN24t and listed its chemical composition. I went away very impressed.

Sadly these things are £8000 plus. Given the way electronics is going, perhaps every home workshop will have one one day

Thread: Workshop security - CCTV
29/11/2018 09:26:37

A few things to bear in mind.

1) Most CCTV cameras are fairly low definition, so yes you do get to know when you got broken into but working out who did it may not be so easy.

2) Burglars know to cover up when they know that there are cameras.

3) Having too many cameras can make it very tedious to find any usable information.

My preference is for a couple of wide angle cameras covering general areas (front garden, back garden and path for example) and then to have concealed cameras in likely places. Near doors / windows where they are going to have a go at getting in. These should be well lit at all times and be set so that a good image of the persons face is captured.

Look up cycle threads. I believe they are 26tpi which would make sense.

I buy stuff from China from time to time, and it takes so long to get here that I tend to forget that I ordered it in the first place [grey cells degeneration] But then, out of the blue---Surprise,Surprise,my goods arrive and it,s like having another birthday. I can,t wait to open the pack to see what,s inside !

The thing is,they have never sent the wrong stuff ! Makes you wonder !

When I buy stuff from China I put a reminder in my phone. This has come in handy several times.

Thread: Canon Printer in Aldi

I bought an Epsom XP412 because I had seen that the computer shop near me did the knock off cartridges for £2.00 for a black or £8.00 for a set of 3 colours and a black. It gets used pretty much every day (mainly printing delivery notes / invoices etc) and has given no trouble in the 3 years I have owned it. I still have the original Epsom cartridges as It didn't seem worthwhile fitting them.

Have you asked the seller for details yet?

I haven't asked him and probably won't as I'm not interested in buying it!

I have asked the question here, firstly because someone will probably know the answer and secondly because it looks like it was a quality item in its day and someone on here may be interested in it.

This looks like an interesting lathe. Does anyone know the make and anything about it?

Could this post be deleted?

Unless i am missing something, it appears to have been moderated to the point of being unintelligible.

I can't see much point in reading replies to points that are no longer visible.

Clearly as a group we cannot be trusted with issues like this!

Thread: Magnetic mill vice
21/06/2018 08:17:41

Oddly enough I have a magnetic chuck mounted on my milling machine at the moment smile p

I had to countersink some M6 holes in 6mm steel plate. I was holding them with one hand with the mag chuck providing a little more security. To be honest I would have been better with a toggle clamp but I couldn't find one crying.

It did work and it was fast, the job got done so it was a success really.

I also have a magnetic chuck for the lathe and that is very useful.

If the certain supplier begins with B and ends in D I would say that overall my experience is good. On the few occasions that I have had iffy goods, I have left a review that is not good. None of these reviews have made it onto the product page, so don't think that they are an absolute guide.

Thread: Clean hands?
02/06/2018 09:40:59

I know a leisure centre manager whose trained & clued up on dosing swimming pools with chlorine, this is very common with lots of skin conditions but he reckons it might have more to do with the urine content. Nobody knows what chlorine smells like, it really is that deadly. When you enter the pool hall & get hit by that aroma . . . that's the gas given off by the reaction of chlorine with urine. The stronger the smell, the more urine

Hmmm, I'm reasonably sure that I didn't wee in the bath smile p

So I think I'm going to continue to assume that it was the Miltons fluid that did the job smiley

Last year I started to suffer with eczema, something that I have never had before. I tried various creams before consulting the worlds top doctor ( Google ). There were a number of mums posting about putting bleach in a bath. It seems that there were quite a few cases where kids would develop eczema in the summer holidays and it would go away when they went back to school. The answer being the chlorinated water at the swimming baths. I tried it and it worked very well. after about a month I stopped and it hasn't returned.

I used miltons fluid not domestos!

It may be worth going to a fixings supplier and getting high tensile studding, rather than the stuff made from spaghetti as sold by some DIY outlets.
