Hmm, doesn't necessarily need to be a complete circle, it could be a short arc?

There are a few industrial sewing machine motors on ebay, if you could rig the foot pedal up with something a little more controlable you would get variable speed as well.

You don't need to worry too much on which cylinder you get, calor dealers will exchange any cylinder for any other, ie any of these can be swapped .

Might be worth asking at the local household recycling centre, there's often a pile there or at least there is at mine.

Thread: Don Young's Rail Motor

I think the problem was all the articles were titled 'simple 040 locomotive' rather than railmotor, I fell into the same trap many years ago......

Thread: 5" Gauge Boilermaking - Heat Required For Silver Soldering

I used a Sievert 3526 cyclone burner which was more than adequate for by 4.75" dia x 18" long AJAX boiler. I did keep a second full gas cylinder nearby, the last thing you want is to run out of gas half way through a heat up

Cheers

You'll get away with a lot less heating if you can keep the heat contained. Fire bricks are commonly quoted, I did mine with a pumice chimney liner and a couple of offcuts of vermiculite board, just arrange the bits to suit, see my photo album.

Cheers

I've just finished the 040 version AJAX as a first loco, it's fantastic on the club track so you've chosen a good 'un. I have a set of 10mm thick steel boiler formers if you want to borrow them.

Having just had a new chimney and flue built onto the house I was left with a spare length of chimney liner. We used the Schiedel Isokern system which comprises various diameters of basically pumice tube. It's soft enough to cut with a hand saw and with a few additional bits of vermiculite board all sorts of arrangements can be made. I think it must have cut the heating time by at least a half as well as making everything much more comfortable due to the heat being contained. The liners are not cheap at about £25 a length but having used it I would not hesitate to go out and buy another length specifically if I had to do a larger boiler. Just make sure you get an inch or so bigger than the boiler barrel to clear any bosses etc.
