Thread: Shell Morlina for Kopp Variator on Colchester Chipmaster
04/12/2016 19:35:36

I bit the bullet and bought 20 litres of the stuff from Smith and Allan in the summer, I think just over £80 delivered. The same oil is used in the headstock so i did an oil change on that as well. Variator is very very smooth and works well so obviously this oil is the business.

From the research I did at the time there were no alternatives.

I use a trolley jack on a shelf under the bench to raise and lift the column, they are less than £20 so you can afford to leave it there all the time. The head can be raised and lowered with a couple of strokes of the handle.

look at my album for a couple of photos of my boiler being soldered in an isokern chimney liner with a few offcuts of vermiculite sheet moved around as required.

My Dore Westbury has a £20 trolley jack permanently mounted under the bench, easy as pie to raise or lower the head.

Thread: Auction Model Engineers Workshop
26/06/2014 21:29:33

Chanced upon this auction, it would appear to be the workshop of former ME contributor Peter Spenlove Spenlove, very sad to see a lifetimes workshop being broken up though.

Sounds like 16mm stuff, typically narrow gauge prototypes modelled at 16mm - ft (!) to use 32mm track. try the 16mm society for more info.

Nice TE on the front cover though, looked far more authentic than the glass case models!

Might be worth looking at 50cc moped rings, most sizes from 26mm dia up here,

Thread: Buying descision
23/05/2013 09:15:35

this doesn't appear to be a bad buy, the basic lathe without accessories is nearly £3k new, with the stand and accesories probably nearer £4k worth....

or for a little extra work and searching for the missing bits, an emco compact 10.

Another option may be a kitchen rudder.

type kitchen rudder into Google images for a few examples both full size and model.

Thread: cellar to workshop - benches

My bench is made from ex shuttering 5x4 laid side by side. Over this is a sheet of 1/4" ply giving a smooth and cheaply replaceable surface. The front edge is protected by a 1" x 1" steel angle.

Ian,

Copper prices do vary a lot, My 10swg x 5 1/2" barrel came from live steam models, £56 for a 13 inch length last June.

, one well known supplier wanted 3x that.....

Thread: Driving Wheel castings for a 5" Claud

My Claud wheels are the correct 20 spoke with the raised bosses in the middle. Not sure where they came from as they were second hand. Might be worth trying blackgates.

Thread: Injectors v pumps
22/01/2013 21:09:44

John,

I too am building a Martin Evans Claud, mine is on it's wheels, cylinder block done now doing the valves (for which Don Ashton prepared an improved design). I asked exactly the same question about lack of a pump on another forum, lots of useful advice the most popular of which is to put a small bore pump on one of the tender axles. The alternative would be a little weir type pump sat up on the running board ticking away contentedly, I quite like that idea.

Cheers

Julian,

Thread: Aligning boiler bushes

Buy a selection of copper shim washers, a 40tpi thread will move 25 thou in a complete turn so approx 6 thou for every quarter turn, easy enough to work out for 32 tpi as well.
