Thread: When does a beginner cease to be a beginner?

Neil, on that basis I must be a real whiz-kid. Started with the bad habits 60 years ago when I was 14. Still got some!

Thread: Shrewsbury Steam Rally

Thanks for the photos IDP, I have often wondered if that was a show worth the effort of getting there. Have you been to the Malpas Yesteryear Rally ? This one is a really good show with around 25 traction engines plus lots of 3 & 4" jobbies, everything else from pedal bikes to combine harvesters, best have a look at there website.

I have no connection to them, just someone who has a great day out there.

And a welcome from one of the many south Cheshire blokes Brian. I have a very strange problem with my shed roof, but most of the problem is with the silly old sod who spends his time in there.

Thread: Lathe advice... I guess I will need one soon

Hi Jamie, don't know where about in the land you live, but if you can make it to Chester between 23rd-27th June Chester UK have got a clearance sale with up to 50% off ex demo items. I have had a DB10V for about 3 years and (touch wood) no problems so far. No connection with them, just a happy customer.

Russ

Lots of places to get the brushes but NOWHERE to get the caps. Sadly they do not come with the brushes, I suspect that any given size of brush will fit various motors, all of them having different holders. Just a guess, don't really know why.

Hi Russ, you have obviously gone the same route as me, starting with an X1L and moving up to a Champion 20V. sadly the X1 has been out of action for about 12 months now as the small plastic grub screws that hold the motor brushes in place both shattered when removing them to check the brushes. They are not available as spares so if anyone out there has a burnt out motor I would love to buy the brush grub screws of you.

Cheers Derek.

P.S. Sorry for using your thread Andy, you have done a good bit of work for a first attempt. Better than my first efforts.

Who to blame! The idiot who made the thing you cut yourself with of course. Didn't you know that we now live in a society where it would appear we have to blame someone else for our own stupidity.

Thread: Sieg C3 Chuck run out
21/05/2014 09:14:58

Over on another forum, one of the chaps there found that lots of chucks have a mark by one of the key holes. He found that if you use this key slot to tighten the chuck it is more accurate than using any of the other key slots. I have not checked this out myself as I had forgotten about it until reading this thread. I must give it a try sometime.

Cheers Derek.

Thread: Unknown Small Lathe.
19/05/2014 07:43:57

Hi Folks, thanks for the replies. Jason, yes it is 20" long, and a nice little project that has arrived just in time to keep me busy now that I have finished the clock. Norman, I think you are right, it no doubt is a length of RSJ and nicely dovetailed on the top surface. It's the tailstock that has me scratching my head. Not home made, because if that were the case why did the maker not cast a bed, and headstock at the same time ???? Did Smart & Brown make anything this small ? , and who would paint a chuck ?disgust

Cheers Derek.

17/05/2014 17:30:24

Anyone any ideas who might have made this little beasty. The bed looks like it has been made from a piece of small gauge rail track. All the other bits (headstock, carriage, etc.) look to be home made apart from the tailstock. I have a feeling it will keep me busy for a while.

Cheers Derek.

Thread: my first lathe - is it worth it, what do you think?
30/04/2014 16:42:48

Hi Russ.

I have had a DB10VS for about 3 years now and only had one small problem which was solved with a quick phone call. I collected the lathe,( and a Champion 20V mill) myself from the head office in Chester where they loaded the two into the back of my mates transit with a forklift. Getting them out and into the workshop was a task and a half, I was 70 and my mate 71, both of slight build so I leave it to you to have a good laugh thinking about it. Both were still in the unopened crates and after set-up have been a joy to use.

Cheers Derek.
