Thread: Pillar Drill (Britool No. 10)
22/12/2009 09:48:12
Hi Sam,
From the slot in the spindle shown in your first picture it would suggest that it was
originally a morse taper fitting. (The slot is to insert a drift to remove the taper.) The collar on the end of the spindle looks like it may have been modified to take a plain shank. It is normal to insert pictures into the post. This can be done with the tool bar button to the left of the You tube button. This can only be done after the picture has been uploaded to the site. It took me some time to work this out last week. I thought clicking the insert image button would allow selection of a file on your own computer.

Hi Ian,
I can see your frustration at not being able to get the information from Gordon
that is required to be able to help him. We had the same problem getting in information about a switch last week but the information was eventually  supplied.

Thread: Yet another boiler making question
18/12/2009 21:49:44
Hi Meyrick,
This it what I like about forums like this. Even when not asking a question you learn things. I think I have read somewhere that MAPP gas has some similar characteristics  to acetylene so that may rule out my first suggestion as well. (I am assuming some reaction between cadmium and acetylene.)

Hi Tony,
You could try using your large propane burner on a low setting to heat the bulk of boiler up to something like 500 deg C and then use one of the small torches that use a cylinder about 3 " dia. and about 9" long to heat the local area. These cylinders are available with either propane or MAPP gas. The MAPP gas is hotter than propane so this might work.  Screwfix seem to sell the cheapest torch at £17.54 but they no longer sell single cylinders of MAPP gas (Sometimes called MAP Plus) Toolstation  sell the MAPP gas but their cheapest torch is £38.20. Maybe a good plumbing suppliers will have both items. The other option would be to find someone with oxy/acetylene.

Thread: Boiler Feed Pump
17/12/2009 22:32:11
Hi Alan,
I have had nothing to do with building or designing steam engines but there may be a flaw in your reasoning. Is this expansion factor for steam at atmospheric pressure or at the working pressure of your engine. If the figure is at atmospheric pressure which is about 15 PSI then if the engine runs at 90 psi above atmospheric this is 105 psi absolute. so the volume of steam would only be 15/105 (about 0.143) of the volume at atmospheric pressure.  I would wait for someone with more knowledge to reply before finalizing your design.

Hi Meyrick,
The cheap ones they use today  seem to have done away with the push to make start button and the start button mechanically pushes the contactor closed. The one on my Chester DB10G lathe is like this as was the one on my pillar drill until I replaced it.

Hi Bill,
In these switches all 5 contacts are just on or off. They are operated  by cams. In the stop position the cam does not close any contacts. One of the 5 contacts will be closed by a cam in both the forward and reverse positions. Of the four other contacts two will be closed in the forward position (Open in reverse) The other two will be closed in the reverse position (Open in forward.) The switch probably has some of the connections to the contacts linked internally.  Meyrick's idea to use an NVR switch is a good one if you have space in the control box. (Remember I have not seen any pictures of your grinder.)
By the way an NVR switch switches off if the power is removed so that the machine never starts by itself when it is plugged in. Another possibility would be to break the neutral to the run winding with a single pole relay (Of suitable rating.) The coil would be connected in parallel with the start winding. (On the side of the start capacitor connected to the switch.)
It may be easier to talk you through metering the switch on the phone. I will give you an email address that I use for situations like this. (Where it open to be read by anyone.)
les_jones at talk21.com    (Do not  type at, use the @ symbol. This is to stop it being recognised automatically as an email address.) You can then send me your email adress
or phone number and suggest times when you would want me to phone you. My phone package gives free calls for the first hour  to normal numbers.

Hi Bill,
Things are now becoming clear. The 10 connections suggests that this switch has 5 sets of contacts. This is enough to reverse a three phase motor with the windings fully isolated in the off position. I am pretty certain this switch would work in your application but with only 5 sets of contacts neutral would be still connected to the run winding in the off position. This is not good practice from the safety point of view so I would not recommend it.  If you do decide to use it I will try to describe the tests to make with your AVO to identify which pairs of connections have the reversing function. One input will go to the same output in forward and reverse positions.

Hi Bill & Meyrick,
Bill I can see why you find the diagram confusing as the switch in the diagram has its connections numbered 1,2,3,5,6,7,9,10 and the switch you have is numbered L1,L2,L3, N (Plus I think there must be more than those four connections.)
I have had a look at Kraaus & Naimers website and there diagrams show their switches with just numbers for the connections. Here is a picture of one of their three position switches showing the connections for both a single phase and a three phase motor.
Are you sure the switch is made by Kraaus & Naimer ? I am not sure if the links between contacts that do not have connection numbers are accessible or are internal links. Are there any part numbers on your switch ? If there are we may be able to get more information. One other possibility is if you bought the switch from RS or Farnell etc then their stock code would help with finding information. By the way bill you did well attaching the image. I did not realise it was so messy to do on this website. I thought I could just copy and past the image to the reply. (Or click an attach button.) It took me some time before I realised the image had to be uploaded to the website first.

Hi Bill,
It has not been established that the switch you have is only for three phase use.
The fact that you say the documentation shows it used in 20 different applications would suggest that it could be used for your application. Reversing a three phase motor just involves swapping over any two of the phases. Reversing a single phase motor normally just involves reversing the connections to the start winding so the switching requirement is very similar. Is the problem that you do not have a digital camera or scanner to enable you to attach the information you have on the switch to your post ?

Hi Bill,
The diagrams are what you need to attach to your post. (Or the exact model number of the switch so the person helping can look at these diagrams on the manufacturers website.) Is the switch a three position switch of the style forward, stop, reverse or is it just a two position switch that will be used in conjunction with a separate on / off switch ? There must be more than the four connections you mentioned (L1, L2. L3 and N) I suspect that there will be 12 connections (But there may only be 8) If you cannot attach these diagrams can you meter out the continuity between all the connections of the switch in its three (or two) positions to create a "truth table" for the switch. I tried to look for the data on the motor on the Hemingway website bit it is only available by buying the book.  Does the motor have an up to speed switch which disconnects the start winding when the motor is up to speed or is the start winding connected all the time via the start capacitor ? (This would be clear if you could attach the wiring diagram of the motor with the reversing switch supplied by Hemingway.)

Hi Bill,
I think you will need to attach the information on the motor and the switch to your next post for anyone to be able to help you with the motor problem.

Thread: Iron Castings
14/12/2009 15:48:58
Hi John,
There is a chap near Epsom who does metal casting as a hobby. He has a website so you could email him to see if he would be prepared to do the castings for you.
This is his website.   The Artful Bodger
According to "Autoroute" it is about 45 miles away from you so it may be too far.
I bought his book on building a furnace which is how I know about him.
I hope this helps.  Les.
Thread: small carburettors
10/12/2009 20:20:14
Hi Steve,
The only thing I can think of that would cause your problem is if the hole the needle goes into is too big. If you think of it as a piston it will produce a downward  force which would be the pressure of the petrol times the cross sectional area of the hole. If this force is greater than the than the upward force from the float then the valve will not seal.
There will be a lower limit to the size of this hole dictated by the required fuel flow.  Making the float lighter (If that is possible.) may improve the situation.

Thread: Gear wheels

Hi again,
I found the pictures of these slip rolls. They are on a you tube video about 3.5 minutes from the start . It does look like both ends are linked. Here is the url

Hi Bill,
I recently saw a picture on the web of some home made slip rolls that used a crank to link the rollers. (Like between the wheels of  a steam locomotive. ) At first I thought it was a good idea but then thought that when the cranks and connecting links were in line it would not work well. Later I thought that if the other ends of the rolls were linked in the same way but with these cranks set 90 degrees from the first set it would solve the problem. I can not remember where on the web I saw the picture.
Something to think about.

Thread: failing spark plugs
19/11/2009 20:34:32
Hi Steve,
If the problem is caused by the plug and not the previous suggestions then I think oil is getting past the rings into the cylinder or the mixture is very rich. Is the plug black with a carbon build up? If it has a layer of carbon on the insulator this will short out the spark. If the mixture is correct the plug should be brown in colour. Black indicates a rich mixture, grey indicates a weak mixture. Try sandblasting one of the failing plugs to remove any carbon build up and see if it then works.

Hi ???,
You are correct that a 10 mm thread will be cut on a 10 mm bar.
Here is a link to BA thread dimensions.
I Googled "ba thread dimensions" to get this.

Thread: Boiler making hearth

Hi Tony,
                 Here is another possibility
They have insulating fire bricks and high temperature insulating blanket. The problem buying this sort of thing mail order is the cost of postage. I plan to use them for materials to make a small furnace for melting brass and aluminium. I will be able to collect from them as they are only about 15 miles away from me. (They are in Liverpool)
