Hi Wallace, I agree with your suggestion of using a Variac but resistors across two of the diodes of a bridge would not produce a current pulsing in the reverse direction. A resistor in parallel with a single diode would produce this effect. Les. |
Thread: Myford Motors |

Hi Len, What I was thinking of as a split phase motor was wrong. I was thinking it was the type of motor that has capacitor that is permanently connected. Sorry for error. Les. |
23/08/2010 16:18:53 |
Hi Len, When the motor was smoking did it rotate? If it did not rotate then the capacitor may have gone low in value or have increased ESR (Effective series resistance.) If it did not start then the current through the winding connected directly across the mains would be very high which could have caused the smoke. It may be worth trying a new capacitor (I will not call it a start capacitor as it is connected all the time in a split phase motor.) before scraping the motor or having it rewound. Les. |

Hi Len, To put photo's into a post you first have to load them to the " My Photos" section of the website. To do this under "My Account" (Near top left of this web page.) click on "My Photos" and copy the pictures there. When the pictures are there you can use the "Insert image" button. This is the one to the left of the "You Tube" button in the blue area at the top of the "Post a reply" box This caught me out the first time as all the other forums I have used just allowed inserting a picture into the post. You could try this website for information. Lathes website If it is not giving you any problem I would leave it as it is. Les. |
Thread: C3 Purchased |

Hi Keith, As I assume that the advert comes from "MyHobystore" I would have thought they should know the correct procedure. I have just had a look to see if I could find information on what to avoid when pasting text but could not find it. I have noticed a few times over the last week when the list of posts show an update to a thread but there is no update for that time. I have not seen it happen to a number of updates at about the same time as it did with "Stub Mandrel's" last night. As this is such an interesting forum I am prepared to live with the problems that the web pages suffer. Les. |

I would have thought they would have avoided posting the mug advert again after the problems it caused last weekend. Les. |
Thread: ARGUS oscillator |

Hi Pete, Here is a link to a design for a spark erosion machine. This should give you some ideas to try. Les. |

Hi Pete, I do not agree with Richards suggestion regarding ferric chloride. In etching printed circuits the ferric chloride dissolves the copper which is not what you want. If the base is aluminium electrolysis might work. If the aluminium is made the anode then it will become anodised but the steel tap should dissolve. I suggest using a small cathode positioned close to the hole with the broken tap. You would use dilute sulphuric acid as the electrolyte. Whichever method you decide to use I suggest doing a test on some scrap material first. Les. |
Thread: Loco lift table |

Hi Trev, After having looked at the picture at the corrected web address it looks like one of the motorcycle lifts that Machine Mart sell. There are probably other suppliers as well. Les. |
Thread: Unable to add posting number 2 |

I have just noticed that with Firefox the picture of the mug is visible. With Internet explorer only the header line is visible with the autors name (Jacques Maurel)

Hi all, Some time ago I added a posting that had this effect. I had to get the web master to delete it which cleared the problem. I assume that a non printing character had got into the post when I did a paste. The origin "Unable to add posting" thread now also has the problem. As both threads have the mug advert at the end I think this post is probably the cause of the problem. Les. |
Thread: How to close account? |
15/08/2010 08:59:48 |
Hi all, I would have thought that the web master should be able to remove an account to deal with someone that missuses their account. For example the person that is advertising in the thread "Small blower valves" Other forums also have the facility to moderate individual accounts when a new member registers. (By moderate I mean that a post has to be looked at by the moderator before it appears on the forum.) Les. |
Thread: induction heating |
14/08/2010 09:42:22 |
Hi Douglas, Here is a link to a web page with links to some induction heater designs. I did a Google search for "induction furnace diy" to find it. I have come across other websites in the past with other designs but I can not remember where. You sometimes see induction hotplates for sale that could be a basis for a small induction heater. Good look with your experiments. Les. |
Thread: repeated postings |

Hi Anthony, I agree with Dusty. It would seem pointless to start a new thread with basically the same topic. It could eventually grow to cover many faults on the CL300 controller board. It would then be the first place for people with a similar problem to look for information. It would also be nice to know if your problem has now been resolved. Les. |
Thread: speed control pcb for Clarke CL300 lathe |
12/08/2010 09:34:06 |
Hi again John & Richard, Forget my last message. For some reason I was thinking the problem was on a Clarke CMD300 mill when it is on a CL300 lathe. The mill has a larger motor which is why I thought the board would be the FC350. Seeing Anthony's new posting on repeated postings made me realise my error. Sorry for the confusion. Les. |
11/08/2010 21:40:56 |
Hi John & Richard, I suspect the board in the C300 mill is the FC350 board as opposed to the FC250. If the board has a transformer on it then it is probably the FC350. (If it is it could be the transformer that is buzzing.) There is some information on this board in the file section of the GrizHFMinimill Yahoo forum under "Grizzly G8689 mini-mill" You will have to join this group to read the file section. Here is a link to this group. Les. |

Hi Richard, The information you have given is not enough to identify the fault down to a single component. IF your controller board is the same as the schematic that John Swift has traced out then the only components that are likely to make the noise are the relays. This could be caused by C4 going low in value or having an increased effective series resistance, or D5 or D6 or R43 being faulty. You would need to confirm that your board is the same as John's schematic and if so that the noise is coming from the relays. I think you will need someone with electronics knowledge to assist you. Thread: DRO for Myford ML7 |
08/08/2010 19:15:10 |
Hi Traction man, I have not used the DRO that you have so I can not comment on the problems you have swapping the scale inputs over. I have DRO350's with the cheap option of Chinese scales. (Which are not as good as the glass scales that you have.) I used a dial gauge to make sure the axis of the scales was parallel to the axis of the slides on both directions. For example for the long scale on my lathe I mounted the dial gauge on the tool post so it was touching the top of the scale track. I then adjusted the scale up and down at one end so there was very little change in reading as the carriage was moved the length of the bed. I then repeated this with the dial gauge touching the back of the scale track and adjusted the spacing of one end of the scale from the bed to get it parallel in the horizontal plane. It was only after this alignment that I fixed the read head to the carriage. Les. |

Hi Traction man, I have just done a search to see what a "SDS6-V3" is. This seems to be a three axis display unit that would work with scales giving TTL level quadrature outputs. I assume that as you have five scales and a three axis display that you have three scales on the mill and two on the lathe. I am assuming that you have built a switching unit to switch the display between the lathe and the mill. You do not say what scales you have or the nature of your problem. If you wanted a separate display for the lathe you could build a DRO350 and two QCC100's to convert the quadrature input to connect to the DRO350. The DRO350 and QCC100 kits are available from Here Les. |
