Thread: Governor drive belt |
10/12/2020 11:52:27 |
Hi, What material do people use for the governor drive belt. My pulleys are 1/4 in wide. At the moment I am looking at a flat shoe lace, but joining the ends is proving to be a bit awkward. Garry

Thread: Surface milling |
13/11/2020 10:06:27 |
Okay Jason, I hadn't thought of it that way, perhaps I should go back to using the 4 inserts again. |
13/11/2020 09:41:52 |
Hi, I thought I would mention about a cost saving exercise that I have done. I have a 50mm dia surface face milling tool which has 4 carbide inserts. These inserts (APMT 1604) are quite expensive (£ 3.50-4.50) each so I experimented with using only 2 of them in apposing positions for balance. It seems to do the milling job the same as with 4 inserts but with a little bit more noise and using a slower feed rate. The finished surface is about the same. I can't see a reason not to do this as a fly cutter has only 1 cutting tool. Hope this tip is of use of use someone. Garry |
Thread: De-magnetising |
24/10/2020 08:48:18 |
Thanks Brian. Have looked at some online and yes they are quite pricey. |
24/10/2020 08:05:51 |
Hi. I've got a lot of tools, like spanners & tooling bits etc that are picking up swarf all the time. Very annoying having to wipe them down all the time. Is there a way to de-magnetise them or do I have to put up with it. Is there anybody that can give me some advice please. Thanks Garry |
Thread: Key steel |
11/10/2020 10:57:08 |
Thanks for that info Nick. The keyways are in the axle for the my 2in scale D & NY traction engine. I would have thought the load would not be that great. |
11/10/2020 10:43:39 |
Hi, I would like to know if key steel is any different to BMS. The reason I ask is I'm cutting some 3/16 keyways in a axle and I have got some 3/16 x 3/16 BMS in stock. Thanks. Garry in sunny Jersey. |
Thread: Locktite |
24/08/2020 10:00:48 |
Thanks for that, That's the number I was thinking about using, I just wanted confirmation. |
24/08/2020 09:43:58 |
Good morning all. I'm going to be fabricating the crankshaft for my 2in D & NY traction engine and was wondering which loctite to use. I've got 290 and 603 on the shelf, but is there a better one for this job. Also if you say to use another number what sort of fit should the parts be for that number. Thanks Garry |
Thread: cylinder liner press |
29/07/2020 11:54:20 |
Thanks both of you. I'm going to go along with the hot & cold idea. That does away with over stressing of the parts while pressing them together at room temp. Garry |

Hi, A question on the press fit size of the cylinder liner into the cylinder block on my 2in scale D & NY traction engine. I've bored out the cylinder block and am now turning down the cylinder liner. Both are cast iron. The bore size is 1 5/8. (1.625" |
Thread: 4BA or 5BA |
23/07/2020 22:19:12 |
Well in the end I think I will stick to using the steel studs I have already. Thanks everyone. |
23/07/2020 19:54:33 |
Thanks everyone for your replies. I've already made up some 4BA steel studs but I wanted to use PB to get away from the corrosion of steel to the studs. I was going to use Stainless steel in the beginning, but some one said that's a no go for copper boilers! |
23/07/2020 16:18:33 |
OOPS ! I got the sizes back to front. I meant to say that the drawings say 4BA and I can only find PB in 1/8 5BA size. |
23/07/2020 14:14:39 |
Hi, I'm building the 2in scale D & NY Traction Engine and I want to make the cylinder studs, which the drawings state are 5BA that go into the boiler barrel in phospher bronze. But I can only find PB in 4BA size. Will this one size smaller be OK. There are in total 24 studs. Thanks Garry |
Thread: Safety valve spring length |
25/06/2020 13:37:47 |
Hi. I am now making the safety valves for my 2 in D & NY traction engine. The springs on the drawing state 22 SWG .125" I.D. & .181" O.D. but does not give the free length. The working boiler pressure is 85 psi. The plunger overall length is 3/4 in and with the adjusting centre screwed down to the approx position, there is a gap of about 1/2 in for the spring. I think I could trial & error when the boiler is in steam, but I need a starting point. Can anyone help me please. Garry |
Thread: Copper tube bending |
09/06/2020 06:38:27 |
The size of the copper tube is 3/8 x 21 g and the bends are like the one in JasonBs picture. I now know I can use lead thanks to Hopper. Cheers |
08/06/2020 22:21:22 |
Well, thanks for all the comments, but i'm not any the wiser about using lead! |
08/06/2020 19:11:15 |
Hi, I need to put some bends in copper tube for the exhaust pipe from the cylinder to the chimney on my Traction engine. And I don't want it to collapse. I was wondering if lead is melted and poured down the tube, this will work the same as cerrobend (woods metal). I know I can buy Cerrobend on line, but living in Jersey the postage gets a bit silly. And I have plenty of lead in stock. Garry |
Thread: Cylinder end covers |
13/05/2020 06:53:25 |
Thanks everyone for your replies. I will now make the end covers out of cast iron as suggested. |
