Yes, there are two rings in one groove. I know that the rings will expand out into the bore, so to me the gap underneath seems to make sense, but I was just getting a second opinion.

Hi, I'm building the Stuart No 9 and am machining the piston, and need some advice please on the following. The rings I have, (which were supplied by Stuart) have a dimension of 1/8 wide and .0525 thick. The drawing has a groove depth of 1/8 (.125) Is this the right depth for a ring of this size. Hi, I have just finished building my 2 in scale Durham & North Yorkshire traction engine and have a lot of spare castings left over that I bought extra. All together I have about 75% of the total needed for another build. The total cost for these castings that I have cost me about £1300 and will sell them at a good Knock down price of £500 o.n.o. + postage. I will also supply a copy of the building notes/drawings that came with Model Engineer many years ago. (By John Haining).

OK, thanks, will try some of the glues mentioned. I was just a bit concerned that the glues would be a bit stiff to go around the governor pulley because it's only 1/2 in diameter.

Hi, Has anybody got some ideas on how to join a governor drive belt. Mine is made of leather and is only 6 mm wide. I will have to join mine in place as it goes around the crankshaft as normal. I have tried to stitch mine but that is very tricky and not very good.

Hi everyone, I know this is a silly question, and I'll probaly get a silly answer. but how do you fill a boiler on a 2 in scale Traction Engine. On my loco, I take a safety valve out and use a funnel, but on the Traction Engine it's not that simple. The water would end up going into the vavle chest and then drain into the chimney and smokebox as well as filling the boiler. The only way I can think of is using the mechanical hand pump that will take forever. By the way, this will be my first steaming after about 5 years of building. Fingers crossed.

Hi, I'm at the cleaning, priming and painting stage now on my D & NY traction engine, and I would like to oil blacken all the cogs & gears but not sure about the heating temp to be used on cast iron. Will this be okay to do, and what sort of oil is used. I could just paint them matt black but was wondering about oil blackening. Any suggestions please.

Hi, The time has come to think about lagging the boiler on my 2 in D & NY traction engine. I have some kerwool which is about 1/4 in thick. But its to thick to use. Has anybody used anything else, like thick cardboard. Will the heat be to much for this type of material. Some of you will say, why don't I just buy some thinner stuff. Well the price may not be a lot, but the postage costs to Jerey are.

Any thoughts please.

Hi Keith, I got it wrong, I men't a mechanical lubricator. And thanks Clive about answering. I will now try some thinner oil for now.

Hi, I've been running my 2 in D & NY Traction engine for the first time, and I am running it on air. All seems to be OK with just a few minor tweeks here and their. But what I did notice was the displacement lubricator was not pumping any oil. I'm using Stewart turner steam oil. This is very thick at room temp and was wondering if that's the reason I was unable to turn the pump anymore. Thinking that it was jammed in some way I stripped it down and found it had eased itself back to normal. It may have had some debris clogging it or the oil is to blame, not sure. So can any one please help with this problem. Perhaps I should be using a thinner oil until I can fire it up and get some heat into it.

Many thanks for all your answers. I have some old Wellseal that I used on my Nortons but didn't think about using it on my steam joint gaskets.

Hi, I'm just about to fit all the gaskets to my steam engine and was wondering what the best jointing gunge might be so that in the future removal will not destroy the flimsy gasket material.

Hi. I was wondering whether to solder or silver solder 5/32 copper pipe to the nipples. My working steam pressure is 90 PSI and I would have thought soft soldering would be strong enough. Can some one advise me please.
