Thread: Glr vertical boiler
30/12/2012 18:59:49

Hi Dunc

Like Martin I used a Sievert 2941 following the instructions supllied with kit and all worked fine. I too used short peices and rings of silver solder around tubes and joints with flux applied, but also did something i think is called "hot roding" where i heated the solder stick and then plunged it into flux powder to coat stick. This i used to fill any areas that the solder did not want to fill or flow into, using the heat in the job to melt the stick not the torch. The process took about 10 to 12 minutes to get up to the right temp, I watched for the flux to run clear before attempting to add any more solder/flux.

I'm very pleased with my efforts and the boiler steams very quickly about seven or eight minutes from lighting coal to 60 psi and running engine.

Just got to finish the the model boat to give it a proper run.

I also want to thank all the people that put stuff up on the internet and forums for us newbebies to learn from.

Thanks Adam

Thread: Constructing the Nemett Bobcat
10/09/2012 09:53:04

Hi

I want to have a go at making the Bobcat engine which has started in ME. Part two opens with "mill a suitable aluminium block", my question is what would be a good grade of aluminium to use. I have the book by Malcolm Stride on miniature IC engines which came as a gift for my subscription to ME. In that Malcolm suggests to use LM4 for the crankcase, but this is a casting grade of aluminium. I looked all over the drawings but can't find any reference to what type of material to use.

Also is there going to be published soon a cutting list (not sure if that's the right term) for all parts required to make the engine, so all material can be ordered together to save on carriage costs?

Thread: How Much Steam Oil
22/08/2012 18:45:26

Thanks for replies.

Yes i do get alot of oil on the valve and piston rod exits so i'll turn up some different cranks with a shorter throw and trial them for a couple of test runs. Are there any signs i should look out for of under oiling the engine or if it seizes i gone to far.

Hi all.

Is there a correct amount of steam oil and can you have to much?

On my steam plant the oil tank empties in about 35 to 45 minutes, the reason for asking is because i'm getting a lot of cream coloured sludge from the oil trap.

Hi David

I made the wheels last year and have been waiting for the whole project the publish before starting the rest, so if you do decide to drop it a full set of the drawings would be good. May be just have a download off the main site.

Hi all

Any chance of a few more pictures of finished components or close ups of the finished model, to make it easier to understand some of the text and diagrams.

Thread: Taps & Dies
04/10/2011 17:11:17
Hi all

Just a quick note.
I did try a 7.2 mm Hole Jason, but same result.
New tap arrived today and two hours later finshed the two bushes and they all screw
up nice and snug.
Just my luck to get a duff one.
Thanks for all the comments.

Finally managed to put picture on, bit long winded!

Jason I'm using a 7mm drill as shown on tapping drill size page on the GLR web site.

Sorry forgot to ask earlier, but tried to add a picture to the above post but it wanted
me to add it to my album first, tried to drag and drop a picture in but when hitting the post button it said i had to many characters. Is there a max size of picture.

Hi all.
Had some time this morning so threaded a piece of hex
with a ME 5/16 x 32 die bought from different supplier.
The nut on the outlet of the steam valve i'm making the bush for
screws onto bottom of same valve, the safety valve
and the newly threaded hex. The valves screw into
the die, but the valves and hex will not screw into
bush made earlier with tap in question. So i'm guessing
it's got to be a rouge miss/badly made tap.
I checked where i bought it from and it's described as
a taper and not of the serial type mentioned earlier
in this thread.
Thanks for all the help.
30/09/2011 21:22:09
Hi
May be a daft question but when using taps do you have to use the second or botton to get to final thread size or should the taper get to final thread size, or have i just got a miss stamped ME 5/16 x 32 taper, or is there a different kind of 5/16 x 32 thread size that is used on a safety value which is labeled 5/16" x 32 tpi

Thanks for the reply, the link to Madmodders look really good. Have ordered my boiler now.
I'll keep you posted.

Hi
Have downloaded an artical on The GLR boiler by Stan Bray from HobbyStore(£4)
which is a series of extracts from Model Engineer 14th March to 6th June 1997.
Really useful read for a newbie like myself.
My question is can any one point me in the direction of the rest of the artical as it appears to continue past that of the downloaded content, hopefully explaining the fitting on valves and gauges etc.

Hi all
I have tried to post some replies earlier but the computer went through the motions, but no posts appeared above untill yesterday when i tried from work computer which uses Firefow for its internet browers.
Have down loaded Firefox on my computer now. So, if it works your reading this.
Rright back to the point in hand.

When i first read about the CountryMan portable i thought it was perfect for me
as it had a "have ago with what you can find" feel about it. So i just filled in the blanks
to produce the wheels to the general over all dimensions. The number of spokes on front wheel was a silly over sight on my part as the picture on the front cover of the magazine
clearly shows. Spoke length on the rear wheels are to long because i didn't trust my maths when working out extra length needed for bending. Looking back now i should have bent first then drilled holes in a jig or something.
You may have worked out by now that i don't come from an engineering back ground. I've been into radio control cars and boats for years but really got more enjoyment from the building of them, rather then the using of the models. So to give a longer building project i bought a 3.5 x 12 lathe and a small Stuart kit to machine about 3 years ago.Cut my teeth on that one ,then bought an X2 mill and a Stuart 10D kit which i finished about
6 months ago. Was planning on putting this in model steam launch hull with a boiler, coal fired if i can do it. So i started looking around for Ideas and when i found the CountryMan project in the Model Engineer mag which i thought would be brilliant for gaining pratical knowledge on boiler making.
Thanks for all the posts when the artical gets going again I'll put some more pics up.
