Thread: DROs etc

Nigel Graham 2, I’m not getting your point about 6, all DRO’s these days measure table movement, the table screw accuracy or otherwise is irrelevant.

Thread: Broken toolmakers clamp.
19/09/2023 20:02:24

Funnily enough in my last job and after 49 years in mainly precision engineering I broke my first 'Toolmakers' clamp, freshly supplied by RS Industrial solutions, obviously from China or similar and they seemed to be through hardened and snapped like a carrot after a moderate clamping force was applied. Never had any problems like that before and the clamps I made back in the day are still going strong, from memory just case hardened as they should be. BTW all my clamps have tommy bar holes.

Thread: Latest ME, ELS Article
13/09/2023 12:50:00

I added a Clough42 ELS for the super quick feed and screw cutting changes plus metric/imperial is available with ease. I also replaced my top slide with a solid block but couldn’t get on with it so I remachined the top slide, added more gib adjustment screws, dowelled the gib and added a slide locking screw, it’s now as rigid as I need it!

Thread: Help in identifying machines
06/09/2023 17:18:31

Hi Jack, as to value, some decent photos will be needed as condition is everything in used machine tools. eBay, lathes UK, Facebook marketplace will all give you good coverage to potential buyers, the first 2 charge, if you get a dealer in you will get rock bottom prices as they need to make a profit, but that route is convenient.

Contact your credit card provider or your bank card provider, explain the situation and say you want your money back.

"Chris, just get onto the seller it’s their problem to sort out but yes very annoying!"

I have emailed the seller via eBay informing them about the failed delivery and asking if there is anything they can do from their end, but it's a Chinese company so I don't really hold out much hope there.

BTW, Evri/Hermes and every other courier have never failed to find my address which is, perhaps, not as easily found as a town house, being located in a narrow village lane, but sat-nav can always find it. This is the first problem I have had in all the years I have been buying from eBay.

OK, open a PayPal dispute.

I read some where that this 'stuff' has a design life of 30 years, trying not to swear but who in the hell constructs a building which will need replacing in 30 odd years??? And what idiots would think it's a good idea?

Tony

Hmmmm. a friend of mine is a civil engineer, with an involvement in newbuild housing estates.
Design life came up in one of our conversations a couple of months ago; he reckoned that most new builds he's involved with have a design life of 40 years; 50 if you're lucky and going for a more expensive option.

Other stuff I'd read suggested that 60 years was the normal design life for UK housing stock.

I've just looked around for an article to back up his comments, and dropped on this one about timber frame construction
http://www.brand-newhomes.co.uk/timber-frame-new-homes.htm

"The timber frame itself is normally "guaranteed" by the manufacturer for various periods ranging from 10 to 40 years. It is a commonly perceived opinion within the industry that 25 –30 years is a reasonably expected life span for a softwood timber framed building."

I've no idea about the veracity of either of those links; not my field of expertise.
I wonder if there is another problem looming.

Has everything in our society got to be a throw away item? Last time I looked a house isn't quite the same as white goods which last a short time and are then launched into some recycling scheme.

Latest update. 'Hunt to spend what it takes' to make schools safe.

You really couldn't make some of this stuff up, was it a case of 'cheap' construction today and in 50 years time we will not be around to fix the almighty mess££££? I'm pretty sure steel rebar is still widely used in construction, any experts out there?

Thread: 12 or 16mm tools
27/08/2023 12:38:57

I use 12mm tools in my Warco WM290V and I can take cuts which are plenty big enough for me, my opinion is that you don't need 16 mm tools on this type of variable speed lathe, the lathe will stall before you reach the tool limits but that is only my opinion!

Thread: Myford ML10 single wheel knurling tool.
26/08/2023 16:00:25

Knurl wheels will be 'industrial' at £30+ and should be of good quality or hobbyist at say £5 a pair which may or may not be 'fit for purpose', difficult choice, also are you after straight or diamond pattern?

Thread: Help identify collet chuck
26/08/2023 11:17:17
Posted by old mart on 25/08/2023 20:44:48:

The code on the ISO or BT40 collet body would tell what the collets are, maybe googling it would help. Whatever they are, it would be a waste of time trying to get them usable on R8.

I'm with old mart, hardly worth trying to make them usable on an R8 spindle.

To be honest i have one. it is spectaculary made. but!!! i get 20 thou run out off mine and thats without a collet fitted..
I suspect tthat can't be due to the collet holder as it is made so well.. not sure where to look next at improving it but thought I should bring it up. I was going to make one myself but bought this instead.
Just some food for thought.

What does ‘spectacularly made’ even mean?

Thread: Gear head vs variable speed lathe
11/08/2023 15:20:50

When replacing my Myford super 7 I lusted after old British iron, namely Harrison, Colchester, larger Myford, newer Boxfords, Austrian Maximat super 11, etc etc, but ended up with a Warco 290V. Once I got rid of the awful change wheel set up and replaced it with an electronic lead screw for my size of work it is hard to beat, I use carbide tips most of the time so run quite fast, the geared head lathes are noisy at the top end. Oh I have also fitted a clutch so I do not need to keep switching the motor on and off.

You will get many answers none of them right or wrong.
