Thread: Fly-cutting flat surfaces
28/12/2011 17:30:22
Hi, this situation is very likely due to the spindle not being exactly 90 degrees[or square] to the table. What method do you use for checking that the head is exactly "square" to the table?

Try to keep your setup as rigid as possible, ie minimum overhang sticking out of the chuck, also a 4 jaw will hold the part more securely than a 3 jaw ever will. All other points already stated are things to check and finally I have used a tailstock centre to support the job in cases where the part geometry allows, just a light support will help.

Thread: Axminster Power Tools milling vices on offer
24/12/2011 12:35:36
Hi, I at various times have been tempted by the Vertex vices at roughly £120-£150 which are a copy of the ultra expensive "Kurt" vices with the hold down facility. Can I expect a better product from Vertex or is a Turd by any other name still a Turd? Personal experiences preferred.

Thread: Axminster Power Tools milling vices on offer
21/12/2011 17:29:21
What a pitiful state we have got into! Why the hell don't they double the price and actually make something that can actually do the job. I have a 4" Abwood which is an excellent vice from another now defunct British manufacturer. I like the features of the Kurt clone but I wont buy crap by choice. I suggest any one who buys one of these vices and is not happy with it makes a loud vocal complaint, perhaps our Eastern cousins might up their game then and produce tools which actually are fit for purpose.

My offer of £100 was declined Strange really as it was closer to reality than £12000

Thread: Myford headstock bearings
04/12/2011 13:18:41
Bob, funnily enough I was just running my super 7 at top speed and the front bearing was a touch warm but no problem there! I was thinking back some 35 years when I had to take the spindle out to change the belt, it was nerve racking but the manual a C spanner and careful attention to detail got the job done. If the belt broke again I would use a made up one so the spindle didn't need to be removed.
Loosen the belt off and make sure the bearings are oiled up, then see how the spindle feels, the locking rings should be tight against each other.

PS I believe there may be an article on this subject in MEW, I wil have a search
Thread: Why are milling machines so b****y expensive
02/12/2011 22:15:24
Machine tools have never been so cheap, made in China/India etc mostly by workers on low wages, crap conditions and no health and safety regs etc, I suppose like our cotton mills in victorian times. All the quality manufacturers in the west are gone so take your pick of the rest on offer!
Tony
PS. We have bought all their manufactured goods and they have all our money so whats next?

Au contraire, mon ami.
HSS responds well to being milled with solid carbide end mills.

Hi Chris, so you are saying you can machine hardened HSS with Tungsten Carbide, would you like to elaborate on this for us "amateurs" so we can give it a go.

Thread: Milling from a sheet
08/11/2011 17:17:59
I used to use a few sheets of A4 paper for this type of job, about .005" thick for each one if I remember correctly.

Thread: Ground angle tool checking device
31/10/2011 17:33:34
Hi Clive, I totally agree with all you say and if the blank diameter is even u/size by more than .05mm it won't have any practical effect. I have also found as I get close to size it is best to run a needle file over the crest to deburr it and then take another cut at the same setting. my tools always have a slight radius on the tip just so the thread root isn't dead sharp. From practical experience even with proper profile form tools the part really needs to be checked for size with wires or some sort of gauge.

Hi Steve, you can pretty darn close with a screwcutting gauge and a bright light behind it. Even with my not so young eyes I think I could get the angle near enough as to make no difference.

Thread: Machining Titanium
30/10/2011 10:51:40
Alf, from my limited machining of Titanium it does work harden so don't let the cutters rub and don't use dull cutting tools. Milk as a lubricant sounds very old school, it may work but I'm sure there must be a better alternative?

Thread: Slitting saw runout
29/10/2011 16:19:30
It depends on you saw diameter, but 50 rpm would be a good starting point for the 3"-4" sizes ones. There is a theroetical speed for all cutters depending on cutter material and diameter plus material to be machined.

Thread: Anyone have a Worden grinder? Experiences?
26/10/2011 21:05:06
Hi, issue 145 - page 46 gives details of the height adjustment. I was half way through a home made "Worden" when I got a Stent cutter grinder for a bargain price.

26/10/2011 20:55:44
Hi folks, Jim Whetren has designed and built many excellent attachments for the Worden and all fully described in MEW. Guess what, he has even come up with a height adjustment for the wheel!

I would hazard a guess that any old stock 'Made in England' cutters you can get hold of will run true.

Hi Gary, in simple terms yes that is correct. There is plenty of detailed information on the net if you want to delve further into the subject. Hardening generally is a more involved procedure.

Hi Ian, are you saying that they scrape the bed instead of a regrind to allow the saddle to travel the full length with no tight spots?
