Come hell or high water, why worry about it? Let the MPs do the worrying, have sleepless nights after bringing too much of their own booze to the party! They dare not let the lights go out - they know that would stuff their chances at the next voting session.

Thread: An unpleasant nocturnal experience.

I used to live couple of hundred yards from a rubbish transfer station in Brighton and had a real hunter cat who used to almost live there. Staff told me she was often seen there - had address collar. One day she brought home a trophy - biggest rat I've ever seen, laying still - feigned death? She hooked a claw in its rear end twirled it round and round, building up speed the let go. Rats head hit garden wall. End. When I thought it safe, I laid newspaper over the corpse to pick it up and dump in dustbin. Absolutely enormous rat, nearly as big as it's killer.

I have heard of a method of killing the but don't know if it's true or would work with family members. Leave pile of grain each end of barn every day. Each day, reduce quantity of both piles and move them a bit closer, finally only one insufficient pile in the middle, so they kill each other for what's left.

I have almost finished making the MK2 version and not yet found any obvious drawing errors, so you can proceed with confidence that there won't be any scrappers as a result. Only maker malfunction! I admit to cocking up a couple of parts from which I learned, older n wiser! One example being the Swivel Base 31, I put the 4 - off, M3 tapped (blind) holes in the wrong edge, next to the M6! "Sod it, not scrapping, I'll tap other side as well!" Not happy with my blunder, particularly as M3 so small there's a risk of tap breakage, especially a blind hole. Didn't break a tap, thank goodness. Something I've noticed is that HH has arranged things that only just work, e.g., thicknesses of metal to be threaded. The tap required is just long enough to do the needful. Wish some of the past locomotive designers could have matched Harold's skill. I basically want repeatability in grinding lathe tools and endmill sharpening but I'm looking for a simpler way of holding endmills as I don't want so much extra work like what's involved with his design. My sadly missed pal once said you can spend half your life making tools to make more tools and not get on with what you really want to make.

Sorry Peter, mis understood what was required.

Now I do and I would go about in similar fashion to that suggested by Andy G, in that as I have dividing gear, I would engrave the divisions and etch numbers and lettering, thus getting the best of both worlds, in my opinion. Certainly, dividing and engraving with some sort of scratching implement will overcome problem of matching a flat scale to a circumferential position. Etching letters and numbers would create acceptably good appearance.

Old mart,

I won't allow anyone through my front door for anything to do with gas until I have checked them out with the gas register. All for giving youngsters a chance to get started in life but what you say, suggests that he should have been accompanied by someone older and experienced, to ensure safety. Hope anyone else reading this thread takes care.

Thread: Another Scam
22/01/2022 22:16:26

I feel rather ashamed of a silly mistake recently. Out of the blue I got an email saying I'm a 26 year-old, how old are you, Baby?

Like a fool I couldn't resist replying with, Far too old for you, stopped being hormone driven a long time ago.

Of course, I have since received umpteen saucy emails offering all sorts of sexual excitements. My security even picked up one and put up a red danger notice.

I expect that a positive response from me would have quickly led to being asked to make payment then theft of banking details - no way!

Wonder how the first email arrived as I don't do porn or any other dodgy sites.

Just deleting them all, hope they get tired of it.

If not, I have another (legal) way to eliminate the problem which I have no intention of revealing.

One lives and learns.

Thread: Sharpening Lathe Tools
21/01/2022 14:33:40

I tried out something that I once saw, but cannot remember where, but it's a wizard tool for the purpose.

Take a round bar of HSS and grind a top flat on the end and below the edge, grind a 5° clearance. Clamp in toolholder with cutting edge at 45° to vertical and small swivel to the toolholder so that "top" flat is at small angle, say 5° to work. Run tool in direction of chuck at usual turning speed with a light cut, since this is meant to be a fine finishing cut. Mild steel shavings like pan scourer pads. Brilliant finish. Such an easy shape to grind. Use a D bit (same shape) to trial it.

Could the masking be done photographically, perhaps using a cheap circular degree perspex disc from W H Smith(?), in the area of items aimed at school usage.

Thread: Smart meter
21/01/2022 14:10:31

1. So called smart meters are purely customer choice (govt said)

2. The power companies have no means of enforcement - report them if they try.

3. So you know how much it's costing you. My Father was a civil servant and he said they had a favourite saying - "bullshit baffles brains". Think they're right, consider this; what's in it for you versus what's in it for them? If you want a hot drink, you're going to boil the kettle, never mind the cost.

Not been an EDF customer for months but within their area in Sussex. Cheeky blighters keep sending messages to get smart meter installed.

I told them I don't give a toss what the meter says, I'm still going to put the kettle on when I want.

4. I don't have one and don't want one.

Dr Black

Sorry about your having to take early retirement.

I have the index in my files. Pm. You email address and I will endeavour to forward it to you. I left school decades before this electronic trickery was made available to the masses so I struggle a bit, but am happy to try.

Dave and Michael, just clicked link provided by you both and it still comes up stuffed with rubbish.

I'm using a Samsung tablet and Android, Google used to search for most things.

That site is the only one found this week with rubbish on it, like it's been attacked by the lowlife. As previous, AVG says that there are no issues with my tablet, so I can only think it's something at David Goyders end?

Will try to contact him.
