Hello John, thanks for your suggestions I will attempt to bring up some websites to have a look at, and see if they will fit in with the project.

Thread: Static Steam Engine. |

Any more thoughts on what engine I appear to have in my workshop,"please". Best regards,
Dave. |

Hi to all who have replied to my thread, and thanks for your time and inputs. The observation that I have to make, considering my and members general thoughts is that the engine I have is some sort of "blown up" S50, manufactured by a company other than Stuart.
I would still appreciate thoughts from members who have yet to read my thread,as I am more and more intrigued now than before.
Regards, Dave. |

Hi Maurice,me again, with half an appology,as I have just seen the engine like the one you must be talking about, for sale on Ebay,a Stuart Turner S50. Again quite a bit smaller than mine, but probably the same size that you built, and the layout is very similar if not identical.
How odd therefore that the engine I have is so much larger.
Best regards, Dave.

Hi Maurice, thank you for your further information, and being as I have stripped the engine down completely since I took the photo's,I have reffered to your sizes and give you the sizes of my engine. Flywheel - 128mm. dia.x27mm. face with 6 spokes.
Piston diameter - 32mm. with a 38mm.stroke.
Still not convinced that it is a Stuart, but I do respect your views, and by the way I am 70 years old at the end of next week, also "ouch".
Regards, Dave.

Hi Maurice, are you sure, as the baseplate on the engine I have is 11 1/4" in length and 4 1/4" wide.
Do you know if the engine you have in mind is shown in the latest Stuart catalogue as I can't find it in the one I have, but addmittedly it is 3 years old.
Thanks for your thoughts on the subject Maurice.

Should have said NJH, that the base casting is a seperate casting to the main shaft carrier bearings and piston guide/slide mechanism. Regards, Dave. |
28/11/2011 19:07:23 |
Dear NJH, I must admit it does look similar to the Stuart S50,but not quite as I see it,maybe wrong though. The baseplate casting is 285mm.x110mm. o/a.

Dear Members, let me first of all appologise if my query has been posted in the wrong section. My question to you all, is,from the attached photographs is anyone able to tell me who manufactured the kit,as it does seem to have been built using a kit of parts, and does it have name etc.etc. http://s1178.photobucket.com/albums/x375/TSDAVE1/

Thread: Hobbymat Lathe |
01/10/2009 21:32:16 |
Hello Paul,
It would obviously be very useful to keep in touch on this Forum to swap details of what MD65 users are up to with their experiences etc. of using the machine.
I looked at buying the mill attachment but have decided against it and gone for a seperate vertical milling machine so as not to interfere with turning operations.
Stephen Lacey does know an awful lot about the MD65 lathe, and is always willing to talk about them and accessories available for them.

Thread: Small Milling Machine |

Thank you very much for your replies everyone, and for sharing your experiences of them with me. I think I am going to have to study in some detail the replies you all posted.
The main thing that does bother me about all of the small milling machines that seem to be on offer today, and it was mentioned by Peter initially, and that is they they all have variable speed motors and plastic gears ( what happened to the belt drive ) which I am not happy about at all.
Thanks again everybody, I will let you know what I finally go for in the next week or so.
Best regards, Dave. |

David, you are lucky, I posted a similar question about MD65 some months ago and was ignored! Was it my breath? I will ride along on your site if you don't mind. Graham
Hi Graham,
No problems, I must have been lucky in getting a couple of Members who chose to give my request some thought, and reply, though I myself expected more Members to respond,as obviously you did.
I hope that the replies given by Tim and Jason were of some help to you as they were to me, as I have ordered some components from Stephen Lacey a few days ago, and expect delivery in a couple of weeks or so.

Dear Members,
I am looking to purchase either a new, or good used milling machine that I would also use for drilling, but having looked on the Internet I am amazed by the number of Manufacturers that there are.
The machine would be used for the machining of components for small static steam engines of various types.
I would welcome any advice on "make and size" that any Member would like to suggest with any other comments they wish to offer, that help me in my choice.
Thanks, David.

E-bays a good as place as any to look, also Homeworkshop

Thank you for the reply Jason, and for the conformation that there is a connection between the two lathes.
The Homeworkshop link you suplied looks like it could be useful in the future.
Best regards,
David.

SL Supplies - [email protected]
was supplying spares for MD65 about one year ago. He said there was a newer version
SD300 which might be downwardly compatible.
Tim Williams Thanks Tim, I am aware of the company and am already in contact with him for various bits and pieces.
I was just wondering if there were any others I could have contacted so as to compare prices etc. as I have always been advised to do so if possible.
Kind regards,

Dear Members,
I would appreciate any advice as to where I can obtain any new and spare parts for the Hobbymat MD65 Lathe.
Also is there any connection between the Hobbymat and Unitech lathes.
