Thread: Which issues of MEW are available in digital archive?
09/12/2010 20:00:02
Pekka,

you will need to buy a separate subscription for the MEW digital archive. That will give you an unlimited access for one year to issues 1 to 145 plus all the latesr ones you already can see as a magazine subscriber. You will receive a "digital subscriber number" by email and have to enter it in the appropriate box on your account's detail page. Then it's just go and enjoy. I subscribed last summer and haven't regretted a minute. Well, keeps me off the workshop rather effectively.

Some negatives: the page resolution on the older issues could be better and in case you want to print some pages for a later reference it's rather clumsy. Still, would I subscribe again? Oh yes, how else could I have the whole MEW at my fingertips?

Terve, SamJo
Thread: How to prepare Hot Rolled Steel for marking/machining

Washing soda or citric acid?.......well, both seem to be available almost everywhere. Will definitely try them. This is getting interesting.
Thread: Log in time

Les,

thank you! So the answer was there right in front of me. Too obvious to notice?

Hello!

As a non-native English speaker I tend to formulate my postings rather carefully (read: slowly), maybe a bad habit that hangs over from my working days. What happens is that when I'm logged in and finally satisfied with the wording and try to send the posting the website reacts by asking me to log in (again) for sending it. In other words I've been logged out automatically and the text has disappeared. Of course, copy/paste will always save the posting and a new log in is not such a big effort, but it would be nice if  the log in page had the option to choose the duration of one's log in like some other forums do have. Or do I just not notice it?

First of all, a belated Thank-You for the comments to my question. The original reasons for my inquiry were availablity problems with some square BDMS bar dimensions in small quantities plus the obvious cost advantage that the black stuff has. Good thing is I don't have to use it very often.

In the meantime I've mostly been shovelling snow and heating frozen drain pipes but was finally able to visit the local DIY / hardware store and bring back some Phosphoric Acid based rust remover. Unfortunately no straight acid was available. After an overnight trial with some scrap black bar I can confirm the stuff really works (thanks, John!). It's definitely going to be part of my shop inventory even if it means another liquid container on the shelf plus some disposal problems with the used brew.

I'd like to know of a good method for removing the scale off HRS. So far I've made some experiments using an end mill but this seems to be rather time and tool consuming. What methods are more experienced engineers using to prepare this material for marking and machining operations?
Thread: Bandsaw question / Proxxon
25/11/2009 18:07:35
Keithmart,

thank you for pointing out the cutting speed issue. My main concern with the Proxxon was the very low motor power (85 Watts if I remember correctly) but obviously I had overlooked another important parameter. So it's back to the good old Armstrong hacksaw. Pity, the Proxxon thing is just so darn cute.....

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for user experiences and comments on Proxxon's Micro Bandsaw MBS 240/E. My understanding is it's a light duty modeller's machine but the manufacturer says it even cuts steel. Can anyone tell me what its steel cutting capacity really is? Can it be used to cut eg. 25mm diameter steel bar or am I just plain out of my mind to even consider this?

Your comments will be appreciated.
Thread: Current Issue?

As a new subscriber to MEW I have a very positive impression of the way the subscription and mailing were handled. After completing the process on 27th July trough the website I promptly received an email confirmation saying my first issue would be # 155, arriving on or around 4th September. Actually, my first ever MEW did arrive in Finland yesterday 3rd September. Great!
