Thread: Model engineering beginner: My first build
27/10/2015 09:31:46

for my first project I chose to make the " Metro " by Martin Evans. The main reasons being all drawings and castings are available. Before I started i checked i had all relevant copies of M.E. showing the build in detail. Also to have the issues after the build is compete for the "corrections". Another advantage was at the M.E. exhibition are many completed models on display and was able to take many photographs. After spending a lot of time making the double frames ( of dubious quality) i found a company that did laser cutting of frames complete with all hole centres marked. (I still had to do the drilling though )

Thread: WARCO WM-250 lathe family and WM16 mill - 001
05/10/2015 13:29:57

thank you for the response from everyone, I now know which way to go. Warco offer a two or three axis readout display (for the same price). does anyone know if the built in z axis slide will work with these displays or is it a waste of time to fit an additional z axis readout and just use the built in one?

I am thinking of fitting a DRO to my WM16 mill but a bit confused as to the one to fit. When I spoke to Warco they said they fitted a 500mm and 150mm to the X,Y axis. Is it because 500mm is the maximum on the GS30 range? Here on the forum I read of people fitting a 600mm to the x axis. Has anyone fitted the GS10 scale that goes upto 1500mm max. I have not seen a factory fitted scale so what is the best position to fit the x scale "front" or "rear" ? and would I have to remove the table to drill if mounted in the rear positon. Any help or advice would be appreciated

thank you for the description of the drawers JasonB, I didn't spot the relevence of the colour, but as Alan said were you trying to make a match? you have now given me another project to add to the "to do " list

I agree Alan the drawers are a good idea. it is just a pity the colour is awful and doesn't go with the Warco Green laugh

A valid point Jason. the shelves are screwed down but as soon as I can get some sheet steel I will be putting a back on for extra support. The draws look good, I never gave that a thought. now I will have to come up with ver 2

I was able to obtain from work some scrap 5mm plastic sheeting and 10mm makralon from a damaged machine guard. After watching various video's on you tube and the picture of the "gold fish bowl" on this forum I decided to try to reproduce them. The rear chip guard is free standing and just slots down the back. The front guard sits on top of the table and does not inhibit the use of the "T" slot. I had sufficient material to make two guards, one with cutout for vice and one with a plain front for times when the vice is not being used.me-3.jpg

At the back end of last year I purchased a Warco VM250V-F lathe and this year a Warco WM 16 mill. Since I purchased the Lathe Warco have modified the Stand and fitted shelves instead of a kick plate. As space is a premium I decided to "do a mod" The kick plate came in two pieces so I fitted suitable supports and using the plates created extra shelvingme-1.jpg

I started off with a clarke 300M lathe and small mill but you soon out grow them once you learn to use them. I now have a Warco WM-250V-F lathe and WM16 mill. But I did end up buying an "engine lift" to help put them in lace.

Thread: Multiple machines from one inverter
20/08/2015 19:42:37

I have supplied multiple motors from one VFD in conveyor systems. but only one motor used at a time. selection was made using selector switch and contactors prior to powering up the inverter . Each motor had their own individual overload. The VFD was rated to take the largest motor.

After watching the demonstration at the M.E.Exhibition in December I purchased an Ultimaker 2 and after the usual "playing" with it I am now printing a model of a Doxford Marine Engine. As it is small scale some detail is lost but allows me to design the parts with a view to build in steel at a larger scale later.

Thread: Sandown photos and thoughts on the show
03/01/2015 17:23:12

I was a bit disappointed with the show due to lack of manufacturers present. I made the journey from Worcester to see the Warco stand . You can say I should have read the programme first. Even so I enjoyed the lecture on 3D printing and have actually placed an order for one. Most of my time was spent in the "makers" area chatting to the stall holders, and was impressed by the enthusiasm shown on some of the "smaller" stands and their willingness to talk.

Thread: Lathe Size
02/01/2015 10:16:20

I started off with a small Clark Lathe but soon found it inadequate especially when trying to machine the wheels on a 5" gauge. After "blowing up" motor and controller twice I then fitted an AC motor with an Inverter but still wasn.t happy. I must have looked at every post on purchasing a Lathe and settled for a Warco 250V-F and later a VM16 mill both machine are performing well and still getting used to the "larger" size. my small workshop now looks full as space is at a premium.

Hi There
You should only send originals, not copies.
Photocopies are available from the back issues department.
regards David
how far back do the back issues dept keep records? many readers have huge numbers of issues of M.E. and would like to help others in the hobby. I agree with the copyrights protection but what if the relative article is no longer available should others help out ?

Thread: Subscription gifts
14/07/2012 14:40:32

while I am all in favour of getting more subscribers, it seems strange that you are proposing to give them digital copies of articles that do not appear in the paper copy. Would these proposed gifts be made available to U.K. readers to purchase. I would think that any offer of early articles/magazines on CD would be welcomed by many. I have M.E. going back many years, but at times it would be more convenient to get out a CD rather than a magazine. So I hope this is one feature you may implement.

Thread: Metric vs Imperial - Practical or Traditional?

one source of back issues is e.bay.  I have now got M.E. as far back as 1948 and was even able to purchase a bound copy of volume one dated 1898.  I was fortunate enough to contact one e.bayer who had 20+ years worth he was prepared to sell as a job lot.  It also depends on how many people are after what you want , I have had complete volumes for as little as £0.99 + postage
Thread: Metric vs Imperial - Practical or Traditional?

much of the far east / australia used to be imperial as a result of the influence of the now defunct british empire. many area's still use the imperial system and the metric system together just like we do in the u.k.
as for dividing an inch by 3 - it would be 4/12   . The imperial system is far more versatile in its use.  to say it is 2 and a bit eighths  or 5 and a bit sixteenths just proves we still need to continue teaching both systems and let people make a free choice as to what system they use and not be forced to by goverment

I too can add up the drinks bill before the barmaid with her "visual aids" and like you was taught all measuring systems. I swap and change btween the two on a daily basis, just depends on the task at hand.  I was not trying to be a moderator but the comment by js was not necessary. If you can't make constructive comments , then don't, its as simple as that.
