Thread: Shop vac recommendations please

i use a Wickes. bought it on special offer only £29. I would not waste my money on a Henry. I bought two and they are overpriced just like Dyson. when i inspected the dead Henry i found the motor to be of poor quality. that was the failure on both of them. meanwhile the wickes is fine

Thread: Any electricians on here - advice needed
10/11/2016 09:19:09

Steve. ... I too have had my kitchen rewired recently and the electrician also fitted the socket for the washer under the worktop. saves having to drill holes for the plug lead. but he also fitted a 20A+neon switch above the worktop for isolation. so your electrician is incorrect and needs to return and correct his work.

fizzy. you need to calculate the volt drop in the cable to the workshop based on max current & distance from the source.

Some time back I found a shaper on a well known website reasonably priced and I had to collect it from a shed in the Forest of Dean. It had been stored for a long time. Once all the rust and debri had been removed I cleaned it up and gave it a paint job. Light Grey was all I had at the time. the only thing lacking is a good solid metal table to hold it down. It also came with the original instruction book and spare parts manual. with a little research it turned out to be built around 1941 and still as good today as when it was built

Thread: 2 ISP's and the printer only on one home network

I used one of these many years ago and it worked well but there are a lot of variations out there. the switch is manual . each time you press the button it swaps printer.  you can get automatic versions but at greater cost

Thread: Tongue in cheek
25/02/2016 13:26:39

Neil. if you look at my previous post they assumed the earth was spherical and as the earth is not, this screwed up their calculations and as a result the metre is 0.1mm out

25/02/2016 11:35:08

The original Metre Bar was made of copper in 1793 which measured 443.44 Lignes in old Paris units. ( you can see why they changed. ) it was changed later to a bar of 90% Platinum / 10% Iridium but now is determined by the wave length of light in the Krypton 86 atom. The metre is now the distance travelled in 1/299,792,458 seconds. I think I will stick to ft & ins. it is easier

25/02/2016 09:32:36

quote from the book

"Some talk of millimeters, and some of kilogrammes.

And some of decilitres to measure beer and drams.

But I'm a British workman, too old to go to school.

So by pounds I'll eat, and by quarts I'll drink, and

I'll work by my three foot rule."

Chris.

" I was once told by an old maths teacher who was avidly anti metric that the metric units were devised by Napoleon who had his best brains of the times measure the weight and circumferance of the world and then divide them repeatedly by ten until usable units were arrived at. Said teacher was delighted to tell us that both the original measurements were grossly inaccurate and that therefore metric measurements had no value what so ever. "
.
.
your old maths teacher was correct. I have a book called "The Measure of all Things" by Ken Alder. it is about the origin of the metric system initiated by Napoleon. in the book they measured the distance from Northern France to as far south in Spain as they were allowed to go. they then estimated one quarter of the Circumference of the Earth to calculate the length of the "metre" but they assumed the earth was round and we know it is elliptical, and that is where the error came in. and makes the metre 0.1mm short

engine 1.jpgimg_0657.jpg   I purchased my 3d printer 12 months ago and have made many small items. As an exercise to learn 3D modeling i made and printed a "Doxford" marine engine from photographs and sectional drawings. Because of this i was able to produce functional drawings to make one in Aluminium. I decided to scale up slightly and go for a 4cyl version. It may not look much and quality is not exhibition standard, but I am also learning how to use my WM16 mill at the same time. bedplate.jpg

Thread: Warco Exceptional Service
23/12/2015 16:07:53

While using my WM16 mill there was a smell of burning coming from the motor housing. When I removed the motor cover the motor was cool and nothing detectable. But within about 20 seconds after switching on smoke started to come from the motor itself. As mentioned elsewhere on this forum I connected a 100w bulb to the drive and all appeared fine , no "flicker" detectable. But when I put my multi-meter on the connections I had DC voltage with a large AC component. 55VDC/82VAC After speaking to Warco and explained the situation they did not question if I was correct, and sent replacement parts FOC without argument or fuss. I made the call on Monday 21st Dec and gave up all hope of getting anything this side of Xmas, imagine my surprise when they turned up today Wednesday 23rd... To quote David from Cambridge " the motto of this story is that for anyone contemplating buying a new lathe or mill, Warco will look after you."

Thread: Warco WM16 or WM18?
19/12/2015 12:45:06

I too have a WM250 lathe and WM16 mill. I did consider their smaller brothers, because of my limited workshop space. I am pleased and content with my choice of machines, but also very glad that I did not buy smaller versions. Another factor to consider is the weight and headroom. I would have liked the larger version but after having struggled to get my lathe on it's stand I purchased a folding engine hoist to do the lifting. but If you have room, and can lift it, the larger machine may be attractive. But as I say, I am happy with the WM16.

Thread: Warco WM 16 and new DRO install
01/12/2015 20:42:58

I too have a Warco VM 16 mill and bought the arceuotrade DRO mainly on price but would like to upgrade later. I followed mechmans48 instructions which with the photographs made installation straight forward. I mounted the display on a plate clamped to the horizontal bar beneath the control box. ( in the photo it shows the unit upside down and has been changed to the correct way) the rear back splash is also a copy of mechmans but in plastic. I have since added removable side panelsdro.jpg

Thread: Use By/ Best Before Dates
20/11/2015 15:58:34

I had a number of bottles of Worcester Sauce that were three years past their use by date. I was just about to throw them out when there was a programme on TV about Worcester Sauce and the presenter was drinking sauce that was 100 years old. He made the statement " the older the better" t he BB dates were imposed on Lea & Perrins by the bureaucrats in gov't. needless to say they never went in the bin and tasted delicious
