Thread: Best grease for taper roller lathe spindle? |
09/11/2021 16:48:36 |
I thank you all for your suggestions and have decided to use Silicon grease with Teflon. I seems to be a bit quieter when running so all is good. Thank you Alan |

Very nice restoration Mark, it looks new |
Thread: Best grease for taper roller lathe spindle? |
03/11/2021 17:38:23 |
I am about to regrease my Stepperhead lathe spindle just to check the bearings etc. At present the bearings are lubricated with moly grease, but I just wonder if there is a better choice. Alan |

Fred, Your whole tractor project is stunning in your execution and just simply brilliant. Wish you every success. Alan Edited By Alan Jackson on 28/10/2021 11:06:33 |
Thread: Parting off - front or rear |

I use this vertical parting tool on my Stepperhead lathe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8HvS13L7MU and a rear mounted HSS parting tool on my Chipmaster Both work well Alan |
Thread: Back to Imperial |

Just ask most people what is their height and weight to see how thoroughly they have adapted to the metric system. I bet a pound to a penny they mostly reply in imperial. That's my two cents. Alan |
Thread: Purpose of screw on keyway |
30/08/2021 16:40:17 |
I think the reason is that the end of the screw bears on a flat surface that can accept the slight gourging that the end of say an allen type grub screw will leave on the top surface of key. If the grub screw is oriented anywhere else it will score the shaft, making removal much more difficult. Alan |
Thread: Lathe improvements? |

Hi Niels If you zoom up on the second photo you can see the screw heads in the chuck bore. Alan |
26/08/2021 18:29:02 |
Hi Niels, Thank you for your kind comments. The screws are secured by locked screws that can be reached inside the bore. Alan |

Hi Niels, Re your narrow chuck, here is my own design narrow four jaw 6 inch chuck. The body thickness is 30mm. The jaws are guided by an oval gib that can be adjusted to eliminate slackness in the jaw guidance. Alan |
Thread: Looking for solution to incorrigibly jumpy needle roller bearings |
17/08/2021 10:19:49 |
I have an older Stihl hedge cutter, electric motor driven. The con big ends have plain bearings (no needle rollers) It has been working hard for over 20 years and still carries on. the big ends and crankpins are slightly worn, it gets hot but still carries on, much like its operator. Alan |
Thread: Setting up rear parting tool properly |

This is much more rigid than the boat toolholder. The base block has a shallow slope enabling the cutting tool height to be adjusted. Alan

Alan, unless I'm missing something the holder still has no direct line of support under the tool and is over hanging from the toolpost which is the "disadvantage" people are talking about Jason, You are quite correct but the cutting tool does not reach (cantilever) beyond the lower support so there is no moment created to make the topslide tend to flex or pivot. If I need a more solid toolpost I use a four way or triangular toolpost. Alan

MLA version QCTP with no overhang Alan |

If they made the vertical scale more realistic say max 4 degrees then the chart would show a much less steep rise. Just what you can do with manipulated charts and figures. |

I entirely agree with SOD and Martin Kyte that the QCTP fitted to a typical small model engineer's lathe suffers from inherant problems, lack of rigidity due to less than perfect fits between the many introduced contact surfaces and increased cantilevered overhang from the support point below. These to reasons alone contribute to more problems than are solved by a QCTP. Alan |

Thread: Theoretical Taper due to tailstock height misalignment. |
04/06/2021 09:40:07 |
Vertical misalignment will make a small error, but horizontal misalignment will make much more error simply because the cutting tool moves in a horizontal plane. |

He is my grandson's latest creation. When he goes into my shed he likes to invent something, he is five years old and shaping up well as a future model engineer. After he left this creation, I took the liberty to glue it together, hope he approves my input when he sees it, otherwise I'm in big trouble. Alan
