You have to log in which basically makes it a dead link for most of us

I have just clicked on William’s link and it worked fine.

I do not have an Instagram account so no logging in was involved.

Interesting video too.

Disaster looms, if lightbulb is wrong we'll have to ban lighthouse and lightship as well. And I shall never have another light bulb moment again.

This will have to change as well:

I thought Cragside laid claim to being the first house in the world to be lit by electricity (albeit using Swan’s bulbs/lamps).

We changed our fixed line from BT to Plusnet about two years ago, no complaints so far.

When away from home I use my mobile as a Personal Hotspot on my 4/5G sim only contract.

Edited By V8Eng on 11/03/2022 15:26:27

Did you change the line of just the company that bill you? PlusNet is in fact owned by BT and they almost certainly use an "unbundled" service using BT's copper, or fibre.

Yes, I suppose basically we changed billing because BT could not match Plusnet pricing.which was a bit surprising considering the company relationship.

Re the comments on conductor rails.

London Underground apart, it's only the ex- Southern Railway / BR Southern Region lines that use third-rail electrification; and the conductor rail is outside of the running rails, not between them. It is mounted on inverted-cup ceramic insulators, and partially shrouded by parallel boards.

(I know 'cos I live at the Dorset end of the Weymouth - London (Waterloo) via Poole and Southampton, line; their furthest extent of electric operation. The same company's / region's Exeter - Waterloo route via Yeovil Jcn & Salisbury was never electrified.)

I don't know where the Tube's third rail is situated w.r.t the running rails.

'

The photographed track looks very new, which could explain the rusty appearance. I suggest it's replacement work that's not yet carried enough trains to become polished.

Edited By Nigel Graham 2 on 20/02/2022 20:50:10

The London Underground is a 4 rail system with (I think) one conductor rail in the running track centre with the other one beside the running track, the conductor rails are mounted on insulators.

I do not know which conductor rail has what function though.

Hope that makes sense.

The storm update suggests that today might be interesting for many! Our maximum gust 2 days ago was 71mph but we avoided any damage to my woodlands and trees. We'll see what happens today. Generator all fuelled up and ready for power cuts.
The Hornslet wind turbine collapse...rare that it was caught on film.

pgk

About 3 years ago we were travelling around the Peterborough area and were very surprised at how relatively close to houses some of the turbines were..

Watching the video makes one wonder at the wisdom of that.

I see that a Wind Turbine collapsed in Wales during very high winds this week.

I seem to remember Fred's personal health and safety protocol consisted of running away very quickly whilst sounding a klaxon and shouting "It's goin', it's goin'."

The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.

I notice frequently warnings are shown on screen about the language and attitudes prevalent in older programmes, perhaps Fred will become a victim of that soon.

I found most of his series entertaining and amusing.

15/02/2022 10:55:25

Watched it last night, not overly impressed so hope it improves next week.

The next generation of electric cars will have quick change battery packs that you just pull into the service station and they yank out the flat battery and drop in a charged one about as quick as filling up a petrol tank, maybe quicker. They are already doing it on long haul electric trucks in Australia, with the battery change stations at the drivers' fatigue break stops. And motorcycle manufacturers are already working on a standard changeable battery pack across all makes and models. Car manufacturers are not far behind doing the same.

But yes, will need a lot of windmills and solar panels to power it. But we are already well on the way with solar in Australia, to the point that power prices are forecast to go down in the very near future and coal power stations are closing down ahead of schedule.

But of course we have the almost limitless space and sunshine for massive solar "farms". And suburban rooftop solar is so ubiquitous it is threatening grid stability with an oversupply of power at times. If only you guys could capture rain power instead of solar!! laugh

Hmm, I don't think so. Cars need custom battery packs due to space constrints. Unless they are all going to look the same. Commercial vehiles aere a different use case.
Do you have any examples of cars with quick-change battery packs?

Cars with swappable battery packs:

maybe a potential candidate here;-

Thats quite elegant in my opinion, with a bit of thought they could have made it a bit bigger, stuck some blades on it and made it wind turbine at the same time - so dual purpose!

By the time the pylon has been redesigned and (probably) massively strengthened plus the likely issues of maintaining/repairing the turbine are taken into account I guess it might be better to put turbines up nearby?
