Thread: Nostalgic moment |
24/05/2022 19:01:45 |
My nostalgic moment was last month when I saw the 1996 Toyota MR2 that I owned from Dec 1996 until 2001. It was going along a local road and looked immaculate that sighting nearly brought tears to my eyes. probably the most fun car I ever owned (and the quickest) Edited By V8Eng on 24/05/2022 19:22:57 |

I would like to introduce a new category : the ambiguous non-word ! I received an eMail today, containing a gem of a typo. [quote] This survey will help the National Physical Laboratory understand how they can offer value to their customers, stakeholders, and wider meterology industry. Britain's nuclear submarine commanders are allowed to launch their Trident missiles in the event they can't hear BBC Radio 4 on 198kHz. Low frequency radio not only has long distance ground wave, it penetrates underwater too. A submarine can detect BBC Radio 4 almost anywhere in the North Atlantic without surfacing and revealing it's position. Unfortunately, the BBC has many enemies working hard to kill the institution. Be ironic if lefty comedians were stopped from pointing out political blunders and sleaze due to a "don't bother me with mere details" enthusiast not understanding what the Archers is really for! (For non-Brits, the Archer's is the world's longest running radio soap opera. It's been broadcast come hell or high water in 15 minute slots on weekdays, plus an omnibus edition on Sunday, since 1950. Allegedly an everyday story of country folk, except almost anything goes. Today, Kathy Perks decided to resign rather than take a pay rise rather than help ruthless businessmen Oliver and Adil modernise Grey Gables Hotel. Odd, because despite being a busy hotel's General Manager Kathy Perks hasn't been heard of for many years. Her plan now is to drive from Alaska to Florida. And she must be at least 70 years old... )

As a former colleague used to remark when the danger of nuclear war was mentioned “The best thing to do would be get as close as possible to an actual explosion”. Thinking of possible long term consequences that might be more sensible than going into a bunker. Edited By V8Eng on 03/05/2022 13:32:50 This link suggests you have no-where to run: pgk
I would tend to assume that an underwater attack might originate from the eastern side of the U.K. if started in right area it would probably wipe out a large chunk of the European mainland as well. I read decades ago a nuclear blast might well wreck communication systems so the survivalists might just be wasting time with radios.. My wife tells me that the last episode was supposed to be about Faberge. She was surprised that the broadcast was not as advertised. Could this be “ sensitivity” about Russia etc? If so it is about as wet and goosey as Remploy’s well meaning “right on “ sign.
Works by John Constable were also featured. I know because we watched it live. I have not seen the robot arm episode yet though.

Thread: Imperial v Metric Measures |

V8Eng Hobs manufactered in mm and as regards the heat plates in cm, because saucepans "always" sold in cm sizes. That supports my comment about teaching cm in schools. As to the fitting instructions this was a simple sheet of paper for fitting into a worktop not end user data. As a long time metric fan I still find oddities. The imperial system is odd anyway take the old pound shilling pence ratio and I cannot even comprehend why a length specified as a nail or separate cloth measure etc. Edited By V8Eng on 11/04/2022 13:43:49 |

I think people need to be taught Centimetres in schools because they will find them in everyday life. Oddities appear to occur, for instance the fitting instructions for a (German) hob in our kitchen show the main dimensions in mm but the heat plate sections are shown as diameter in cm. Centimetres belong with dressmakers and schoolteachers. Engineers use metres and millimetres. Similarly radius is a concept used by mathematics teachers and turners. Engineers use diameter, —— Discuss. Dave……tongue in cheek!

A good starting point with stuff like this is to switch off for about 5 mins (if possible) then on again. My two indoor ones (can’t think of make) do all sorts of odd things if the replaceable batteries get low. Edited By V8Eng on 28/03/2022 21:59:37 |
