Thread: Tom's Fantastic Floating Home |

My post about this programme originated from the fact I pretty much stumbled upon it by accident, I was certainly not intending to be discourteous in any way. Having watched it for a few minutes, I thought it might be of interest to to some of the people on this forum. I assumed that there was enough information available in guides etc for people to decide about watching it, not wanting to be typing rather than watching the programme. As to dross for the masses, I can only say one persons idea of dross might be somebody else's gem, who can really say they are qualified to judge? I have no connection with the media and (as far as I'm concerned) not advertising anything. Edited By V8Eng on 28/07/2014 19:18:28 |

Just watching this programme on Channel 4, proving interesting, and entertaining on lots of levels. I expect it will be on 4+1 at 20.00. Edited By V8Eng on 27/07/2014 19:34:54 |

May bugs are very good at crashing into our security floodlight, then they fall to the ground (usually upside down). The local foxes seem attracted to this and eat them off the ground, the munching and crunching noises are very loud. The foxes only seem to eat them fresh though.

Just an idle thought - The car mag 'Practical Classics' has a forum, might be worth asking the question again there. I expect the other car mags have forums as well. Edited By V8Eng on 24/07/2014 11:37:09 |

Went to an event called Art in Action at Waterperry near Oxford. It is a really good day out with, painting, wood workers, stone carvers, sculptors, jewellery, ceramicists, glass workers, plus lots of stuff I'm too lazy to type. Loads of ongoing practical demonstrations, plus things for the young ones. if you want to buy stuff as well there is lots to be had. OK I know it's not Model Engineering but well worth the visit over this Weekend, in my opinion anyway. It's in Marquees plus outdoor stuff, parking on large field areas.
Oops missed most of the capitalisation! Edited By V8Eng on 17/07/2014 21:53:52 |

Many (many) decades ago I made a hull over a former using papier-mâché, I used paint not varnish though. stopping the water getting into the paper etc was too much of a problem and altogether it was not a long term success. If you want to have a go, Axminster tools is a good place for things like shellac, very helpful people. Edited By V8Eng on 07/07/2014 11:59:50 |

I seem to encounter problems when they try to scan the print it yourself type tickets which are so prevalent now. Having read this thread helps me understand possibly why this happens, we only have an inkjet printer so cannot test any theories.

I have used Varifocals for a few years now and find them great, would not go back to ordinary or Bi- focals. Only disadvantage I've found seems to be if you are working at something like fixing things to a ceiling, so keep an ordinary pair as well. |

Thread: Walking beams |
20/06/2014 19:17:15 |
Possibly because when ships had beam engines installed, the beam and some of the mechanism was above deck level. Viewed from the side that could give the impression of the beam mechanism "walking". Edited By V8Eng on 20/06/2014 19:18:38 |

Even animals can be very fussy. I watched a cat hunt down a mouse in our garden the other day. Just about everything got eaten, except for the gut and four well developed but unborn babies. Edited For missing words. Edited By V8Eng on 16/06/2014 17:50:42 |

My house was built in 1949 and the sockets are uniformly at 600 mm up from the floor which works for me. Having seen the Mother in Law struggling with skirting level sockets when she was 90, I can only say get rid of them. Edited By V8Eng on 12/06/2014 15:56:07 |

I found the solution to accidentally opening VW windows from the key fob, it could be disabled in the menu system (do not know if that applies to all models). Really it would have been ideal if the system could be left to operate on a closing only basis to cope with passengers opening them but forgetting to close them before getting out, I could not find that that option though. Somebody will just have to go away and invent steam power, a nearby coal mine might come in handy as well. Sorry Nigel, my post appeared just after yours, similar ideas just a few decades apart. Edited By V8Eng on 04/06/2014 20:25:13 |
