Happy to oblige. My only experience with flame gulpers was watching one at an exhibition then smelling strongly of paraffin afterwards due to the spitting back effect of the burner. Edited By V8Eng on 22/10/2022 14:35:59 |

If I remember correctly PM list it as a solar engine on their website although I have not looked on there recently. Puzzling to me but I am easily confused these days (so the Wife tells me). Nice little runner though and interesting sound. Edited By V8Eng on 18/10/2022 13:40:25 Edited By V8Eng on 18/10/2022 13:42:50 |
Thread: Power Cut Proofing |
08/10/2022 14:36:31 |
Thanks for an interesting and informative discussion. The 64,000$ question beyond the need to maintain the CCTV is what of her devices don't automatically reset after a power cut. I suspect the need for continuous CCTV and associated internet connection is indeed, as V8Eng says, to help keep the insurance company happy.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————- Hello Clive. I was not suggesting I know anything that would keep an insurance company happy because I have no idea about their requirements. I was saying that your Sister should check the wording in her insurance policy (very carefully) about leaving the house empty for a period of time, my own insurance has very specific requirements and I am only allowed to leave the property unoccupied (they even define that carefully) for a specific number of days or it is uninsured. As to the monitored security idea, that was a method of getting the house security monitored 24/7 by a professional company rather than relying on a hit and miss method of watching her own CCTV. I think our friends used ADT but there seems to a plethora of companies offering those systems. sorry this post appears twice but I was stopped editing after lunch mid posting.
Hope you get a satisfactory outcome to all of this. Regards. V8Eng. PS. my boiler auto restarts.

Just out interest, has she checked out what her insurance policy has to say about leaving the place empty for extended periods? I think some vary in winter as well. Another thought is, how about a monitored security system? Our friends had one installed and various cameras activate if problems occur then suitable responses occur from the company for the situation. That would leave you less to get involved with! Connecting up and starting a genny from 200 miles away is a challenge. I know it could be permanently connected and auto start but I think we're getting into overkill territory. Difficult to remotely top up the fuel, and very tempting for the light fingered brigade, who would soon work out that the house was unoccupied I think the genny would be gone in short order especially if plenty of power cuts were occurring. |

I suspect that you might need something quite substantial to keep it all going reliably thorough a power cut of unknown duration. Have any consumption figures been obtained? We used to have simple battery back up emergency lighting (big box 2 batteries in it flood light on top) at work which would run for a few hours so I guess unsophisticated stuff might work. |

My CCTV runs off mains power converted to 12v for the system and everything (incl router) automatically restarts after power is restored. Sounds to me as though you are trying to make a UPS it might be more reliable to get a commercial UPS set up installed, but might be expensive. I stand to be corrected by the more knowledgeable folk on here though. Edited By V8Eng on 07/10/2022 17:16:42 |

Do not forget electrical etc safety checks first.

We have one of those in the conservatory and the display went blank. They still appear new on eBay & Amazon (mine was from there) maybe others as well, but contact Honeywell first as Adam says. Edited By V8Eng on 04/10/2022 13:53:30 |

Apart from the DMUs I was involved with Maybach engines and German transmission systems on the WR plus EE on the 08s followed by mainly Sulzer engines Like Tricky says I do not think you can lump British industry together and am sure Napier, Paxman & EE plus others would be very offended by some of the comments. I feel that much of BR think during initial dieselisation was hidebound and stuck in individual company ideology so instead of a unified way forward various regions ploughed their own furrow. A diesel guy could stumble into work at 07:59 and have his train up and running at 08:00
Not really, don’t forget all the pre-departure checks. Also providing the train or loco had not stood outside all night in mid winter and wouldn’t start. Edited By V8Eng on 02/10/2022 12:20:07 If you're interested in diesel start-up procedures, Talking Pictures TV (Freeview channel 82) are showing the training film Driving the Train (1959) on 5th October at 05:40. Bit early, but set the recorder! They are running a season of British Transport films at the moment. Rob I will certainly record that it will be interesting to see the official view. I worked on diesel maintenance for BR throughout the1960s (Apprenticeship plus about 7 post years), DMU plus classes 08, 35 & 52 then latterly class 47. I remember many issues with prep for service and starting etc and the last hours of night shift was not funny. Edited By V8Eng on 02/10/2022 17:11:43 |

Thread: Weller TCP soldering iron |

I had a weller tcp1 at work for many years and from what I remember if trouble occurred it was important to clean the inside of the tube that the tip sits in. Great irons I still miss it but do very little soldering of that type now and just rely on an old antex. Edited By V8Eng on 01/10/2022 23:28:31 |
