Thread: Does This Impress You?

I think I'm off to saw some pallets up for firewood.

Do I try to keep to plus or minus 0.010" thou lads ?

John S.

Keep 'em on the minus side John, too long and they won't fit in the fire box.

To take a leaf out of the olde gunsmiths' book - to do it properly the screws should be regulated so the slots fall to the right position at the right tension.

Thanks Dave, but several posts of mine since 26/2 up until just now, have also gone missing.

Am I imagining things, or has this thread been gutted of several posts, including some of my own?

Thread: Data required to machine 2:1 ratio spur gears

Posted by mick on 26/02/2012 08:58:28:

Hi. Tel.

I'm at a stage where the cam and crank shaft centres have been bored and bushed. I tried to scale up the gears by 50% but the originals spec are 40DP which worked out at a half tooth spacing.

I'll try the stockists again armed with the information kindly supplied.

Thanks to all.

Mick

frown Bugger! Tel's Rule of engagement #5247 - Never mark out centres for gears without the gears on hand. You could make an offset bush for the camshaft hole..

Scaling the engine up should measnt you have a bit of latitude and don't have to stick slavishly to the 50mm centre distance - alter that to fit an easily obtainable/makeable pair of gears.

Man!!! Talk about a sledge hammer to crack a nut, any half decent set of side cutters 6" or above should handle 1mm spring wire with ease.

Hi Michael, I was taught that carbon taps and dies were only for cleaning or clearing threads, buy good quality hss taps and dies use the correct cutting compound and always clear the thread, half a turn forward and one complete turn back. I personally think carbon taps and dies are a waste of money.

Good luck Alan

'fraid I must disagree - a good quality carbon tap will give you a better cut in most any material than what a HHS one will. HHS are called 'heavy handed' taps in my workshop.

Thread: The dreaded drilling job!

I just did mine..this way is very easy: I marked the exact route the drill needed to take on the outside of the casting. Put a 2mm dia lengtht of bar in the 2mm collet and lined the line on the casting up with the edge of the vertical bar, as in previous post. Swap bar for cutter and slightly relieve are where holes are to go - so the drill will now be cutting perpendicular to the face (square in other words, this way the drill goes in straight and true and comes out exactly where you expect it to!). Remark and pop the hole centres and drill away - near perfect results! I dont wurry about the holes being at slightly different heights in the ports (a result of the holes being druilled in parallel to the bore), never been a problem.

As often as not I do 'em this way as well, tho the only marking I usually do is the starting point and the bottom of the port with a 'Sharpie' magic marker.

Something must be happening, it appears as though I now have 'quote'. 'link'  capacities

Well just about none of it works for me - FF 10.0.2 on Win 2000 - I can get images 'from album' but virtually nothing else works - put the old one back IMHO

No argument here!

Agreed, but if the part is bowed then by definition the two sides are not parallel, even if the distance between them is the same. Only straight lines and planes can be parallel.

Ah, so the Earth is really flat after all then? I knew them crazy 'Round Earthers' were wide of the mark!

Begs the question, dunnit! Just how do you make an imperial thread illegal? Around 30 odd years since we 'went metric' here and the whitworth bolt is still the hardware store standard.

I know what you mean tho' - it can be very irritating, especially if you have gone to some trouble to make a reply. It's not just here tho' - it's right across the spectrum of fora from what I can see.
Thread: What size do i drill a brass cylinder in order to ream it 5/16 "

19/64" if you can rely on your drilling being straight. I think I would drill it 9/32" tho, and true it up with a little boring bar until the 5/16" reamer 'just won't fit' and then have at it.

Thread: getting there..... now for the slide valves

No, the nut should be free to move in it's slot - the valve should be held to the port face by the pressure difference between the steam and exhaust cavity sides.
