Thread: Motorcycle General Discussion |

Tuesday 17th March 2020 is the first Top Speed meeting at Elvington. Apart from other machines trying for PB Graham will be testing his steam rocket machine. This should be on a full tank last month he had a private shakedown run test at Elvington. |
Thread: ER collet chuck/mill incompatibility? |
07/03/2020 15:15:41 |
I was supplied with a ER collet chuck from Warco when I purchased a mill from them. The chuck had no means of holding the body so I used a carbide end mill and machined spanner flats on it. As the chuck body had been hardened had to use a carbide cutter it did the job ok. Edited By Windy on 07/03/2020 15:16:29 |
Thread: ME taps and dies |

I have migrated to Metric and they have a good range of pitches all my large collection of ME have been disposed of now. Off the shelf mm fasteners are easier to find as well. |

I used 40 tpi on my stainless flash steam pump ball valves and used to screw cut them and finish with a Tracy tools carbon die. Most were ok but had to watch for sometimes a small bit of metal would seem to weld to the die thread a bit like ally can build up on a turning tool. That same build up of metal on a tap would sometimes happen as well so check your taps and dies threads are crisp and clean. Use plenty of threading lube |

Looks like I received another scam today supposedly from my Email provider have reach the storage limit on it. Was suspicious as not from my provider. Have contacted them to check validity will just wait and see. Just got to be cautious with the internet. Windy |
Thread: Windows 7 support ends |
31/01/2020 23:52:20 |
Have upgraded my 64 bit laptop as well with 10 less difficult than the main 32 bit desktop. Only problem was getting wireless network to connect after the 10 install but finally sorted it. |

I still get support from Norton on a spare ancient PC that uses XP. Well bit the bullet and did an upgrade to Windows 10 for nothing . A local computer firm gave me advice he reckons the freebee will be stopped soon. Apart from what seems more complicated at first am getting the hang of W10. All my antique programs seem to be working. Edited By Windy on 29/01/2020 23:43:44 |

It's not that easy at times what you think might be a scam sometimes is genuine. I got one on a survey of my bank so did a face to face check with the bank concerned before I opened it. A genuine survey and they did not need personal or financial details. Banks etc.I physically check with them I do not use the phone or email to talk to them. |

Thread: Windows 7 support ends |
15/01/2020 11:08:41 |
Can you PC buffs clarify something regarding the end of support for Windows 7 many of my programs are old and will they work on Windows 10.
I am on Norton security will that cope with any nasty's if I still use Windows 7.
PC World recommends not using IE if still on Windows 7 as not security supported on that 7 system.
Would prefer to stay on Windows 7 if it’s safe with just the Norton security.

Thread: 2020 Had my full size flash steam engine running |

Have been looking at full size water pump pulsation dampeners the industrial ones would make a hole in my wallet. Been thinking of certain paint ball and aqua diving bottles that might be a possibility. They are available in many sizes and pressures to 45000 psi they are aluminium or carbon fibre. Any thoughts and designs that members might know of. Would prefer to buy one that is certificated otherwise might make one. |

Wonderful! Is the poppet valve pressure balanced in any way, or does it just open against HP steam? Afraid not I played about with them in my early days with the model but have high rpm to contend with. Discussing this with my steam rocket drag motorcycle friend when his poppet valves went wrong against tons of water pressure. We came up with a very simple nearly balanced poppet valves they would probably be ok at slow speed openings. He decided on a butterfly type valve instead from America that their water, steam rocket people use successfully. The successfully Canyon jump machine jets were similar to his rocket motorcycle power unit. Edited By Windy on 08/01/2020 17:31:52 |

Not sure if my link worked on my slow speed test runs so will try this.

Another test running on compressed air. |
05/01/2020 15:56:32 |
Had my full size flash steam engine running yesterday on compressed air unfortunately have not got too much pressure and quantity for high rpm so just a pop, pop at low rpm. Had to retard inlet poppet valve and use compression release valve to enable it to run with my limited compressor also added temporally extra mass to crankshaft for this test a lathe chuck. Would run on about 90psi with this setup but need a lot more pressure to run on the proper valve settings.. |
Thread: Myford super 7B Chuck threads |

I bought a S7 a few years ago with various chucks. Most were a very good but tight fit. Have you checked a bit of swarf or damaged thread is not causing binding. Sometimes swarf can become embedded in the metal. |
Thread: What Did You Do Today 2019 |

At long last am at a stage to test run on compressed air.
Unfortunately my compressor does not have capacity and high enough pressure.
Going on my experience with flash steamers will need at a least 150psi and a lot of air my petrol head friend at work has a screw compressor and 150psi so in the New Year will see what happens.
At 120psi it’s so near continually running and a sharp exhaust noise on air.
With high pressure superheated steam could be an interesting noise.
It has a variable compression release valve to ease starting but flattens my air supply.
Will finish welding the exhaust manifold today amongst other jobs.
All the best to you all for 2020.

Possibly a tacho generator ? Colour & painted on markings look like those seen on military equipment, so maybe a TG from an engine to drive a tachometer remotely on an instrument panel. If you have a DC meter, try connecting to the terminals & spin the shaft to see if it generates a small voltage - the voltage will be proportional to the speed. I've used similar looking devices for speed feedback on machine tool spindle motors - usually 60v/1000rpm in that application. No real current available, though - the windings are optimised to provide an accurate voltage with low ripple. Nigel B Just rotated it at about 500rpm on the lathe and got 1.47v. I got 2 of these at a car boot years ago would like to know what they are. The manufacturer was taken over by AVO is it part of some test equipment or motor, generator. One is brand new in a sealed package. Evershed & Vignoles Ltd London W4FBRX6A/H3/C No H6532 Edited By Windy on 16/12/2019 12:28:01 Edited By Windy on 16/12/2019 12:28:38 |
